Snowblind Studios' latest trailer for Lord of the Rings: War in the North introduces the upcoming action RPG's main villain, Agandaur.

The trailer also fleshes out the storyline and answers a few questions about what this War in the North is all about:

So who's this Agandaur guy? As far as we can tell, he's not mentioned anywhere in Tolkien's works, but Snowblind has worked him into Middle-earth's lore. In an interview with our friends at IGN, Producer Ruth Tomandl had this to say about Agandaur:

"Far back in the history of the Men of Middle-earth, there was a group of Númenóreans who went over to the dark side and became servants of Sauron. The Mouth of Sauron and Agandaûr are both descended from that group. Agandaûr is ambitious and he's become one of Sauron's chief lieutenants. He's been sent to the North of Middle-earth to open up another front in the War of the Ring, and he's doing his job very effectively."

War in the North is being developed for Windows PCs, the PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. A release date has not been announced, but the game is expected sometime this year.

Sharkey says: Snowblind and Warners are billing this as the Lord of the Rings game fans have been waiting for. That the developer and publisher are reaching outside of the core material for the story will surely upset some Tolkien purists, but I'm all for it. As an action-RPG fan, this game is high on my list of Must Buys for 2011.
