A launch day patch failed to make Brink lag-free on consoles as frustrated gamers continue to stutter their way through online battles. Bethesda and Splash Damage say more updates are on the way to fix the problem, and as an apology, the publisher and developer plan to make the first DLC pack free.

As Brink fans await the patches, Splash Damage has created a workaround in the form of a configuration change for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 players. Freeplay multiplayer matches will now automatically be set to 8-player (4v4) games. Full, 16-player matches will still be available, but to enter an 8v8 game, it must be selected via a new Big Teams setting in the Brink menu.

"This new configuration will allow those connecting to and hosting matches (particularly those with lower upstream bandwidth) to more reliably find and connect to quality hosts via the match-making process -- resulting in less lag and more fun," Bethesda and Splash Damage stated on the official Bethesda Blog.

To make up for the rough start, the publisher and developer said the first DLC for Brink -- set to launch in June featuring new maps and additional content -- will be free. Further info on the patches and DLC will be announced soon.

Sharkey says: Here's what I had to say in my review: There are also some red flags that could become major problems in the metagame. Most notably, Brink gets laggy. And I'm talking "What is this, dial-up?" kind of lag. Whether it's because of server issues or wonky netcode, it's unacceptable for a game dedicated to online play. The studio says a patch for the problem will be live by the time you read this, so this could very well become a moot issue by launch. Unfortunately, it's not a moot issue, and it's a major problem. Fix this quickly, Bethesda and Splash Damage. After Fallout: New Vegas, one of the buggiest games in years, not to mention past games from the publisher with serious glitches, it's getting to the point where it's not worth buying a Bethesda game at launch. Shame. Here's to hoping the trend stops with Rage and Skyrim.
