Perhaps tired of jinxing NFL stars themselves, the folks at EA Sports have decided to let the public choose the player who will appear on the cover of Madden NFL 11.

For the first time in the game's 22-year history, fans will pick the cover player from among the three finalists that EA named today: Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne.

"It's something our team looks forward to every year, and we are excited to see the level of enthusiasm our fans will bring for this historic decision," EA Sport's VP of Global Marketing Todd Sitrin said in a press release.

Awww, they said I could pick!

EA partnered with Doritos on the promotion, and fans interested in taking part can head to the chip-maker's website to vote. Polls are open through March 15th.

In related news, EA's annual Madden Super Bowl simulation predicts the Saints will beat the Colts on Sunday in a barn-burner, 35-31. And yes, digital Dwight Freeney was on the field for the Colts.

Sharkey says: I'm just thankful none of my Patriots are among the finalists. Since 2002, the Madden cover curse has worked its dark magic on Daunte Culpepper, Marshall Faulk, Ray Lewis, Shaun Alexander, Vince Young, Michael Vick and most recently Troy Polamalu, who appeared on Madden 10 with Larry Fitzgerald.
