Bethesda announced today that three batches of downloadable content for Fallout 3 are scheduled for release on Xbox 360 and PC early next year. The first content pack is called "Operation: Anchorage" and retells the story of the battle to liberate Anchorage, Alaska from Chinese Communist invaders through a military simulation. "Operation: Anchorage" will be available in January 2009.

Two additional content packs are also on the way and "The Pitt," which introduces a colony of raiders that have ensconced themselves within the remains of Pittsburgh, will be released in February. If you're keen on joining up with the Brotherhood of Steel to eradicate the Enclave, then you might want to hold out until March when "Broken Steel" sees release.

Also announced today, the GECK (Garden of Eden Creation Kit) game editor will be available on PCs this December. The GECK gives modders easy access to tools designed specifically for creating new content for Fallout 3. Many fan-created Fallout 3 mods are already available for the PC, but the release of the GECK should encourage mod proliferation and allow for more complicated and extensive mods than are currently possible.
