Gamers who had plans for the first part of November may want to put them on hold. Bethesda Softworks announced today that Fallout 3, its post-apocalyptic RPG, will be dropping onto store shelves on October 28, 2008. Since its announcement, Fallout 3 has been one of the gaming world's most eagerly anticipated, intently analyzed and hotly debated titles.

Fallout 3 is the latest edition of the Fallout series of games. The first two -- created by the Black Isle division of now-defunct Interplay Entertainment -- remain two of the most beloved and critically acclaimed RPGs ever made, appearing frequently in "Top 10" and "best of all time" lists. The demise of Interplay brought the framchise to Bethesda Softworks, most noted for its Elder Scrolls series of open-world-style RPGs. True to form, Bethesda's Fallout 3 moved the series from its prior isometric view to a first/third-person camera, a move that's come in for some criticism. Since the announcement, however, the few glimpses of the game that Bethesda has allowed have met with considerable praise from the press.
