According to Bethesda's community manager, a working version of the Fallout 3 DLC The Pitt will be available for download over Xbox Live sometime this evening. The announcement was made in the Xbox 360 DLC Hardware and Software Issues section of the company's official forums. A similar announcement was not made on the Games for Windows Live section of the forums, despite many reports of bugs and crashes.

Bethesda hasn't helped the case for the transition from retail to digitally delivered content with its latest DLC, The Pitt. The Pitt was originally released on Monday evening over Xbox Live. Gamers had no trouble paying 800 Microsoft Points for the DLC, but were delivered a corrupted version of the software expansion. The Pitt was delivered with unfinished terrain, deadly world boundary issues, and assorted other game-breaking bugs. It's still unclear exactly what happened in the process that allowed a version of the content that couldn't possibly have passed quality control to be released.

Those who have already paid for the content should be able to download the updated version this evening at no additional cost. In the meantime, you are encouraged to delete the corrupted content from your hard drive in the Fallout 3 section of the Xbox 360's system settings / memory / hard drive / games / Fallout 3 directory.

It is also recommended to use game saves made prior to the DLC content being loaded.

Gerald says: Some gamers are going to be screwed royally by this whole situation. The forum post where the Bethesda community manager provides the update also relates how some gamers tried to hotfix the issue themselves by deleting all their saves except for those inside The Pitt. While it may be seen as their fault for trying to resolve the issue themselves, they have my sympathies.

I lost all my Mass Effect saves when I dropped my hard drive, which broke my heart. We become emotionally invested in these game worlds, especially after spending dozens (if not hundreds) of hours in them. I can only imagine how I'd feel if I lost all my Fallout 3 saves.

We don't have a specific time to report for the uncorrupted version of The Pitt, but "this evening" sounds like it will be later than just a few hours from now. My suggestion would be to hold off and wait until it's confirmed that the next version available is in fact bug-free, especially if you haven't already paid for the download.
