Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days claimed the top spot in its first week on the charts in the UK, but Activision's omnipresent shooter once again stole the headlines. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is finally and officially the top selling videogame of all time in the United Kingdom.

Though GFK Chart Track did not reveal the official tally, the agency did report that it took previous record holder, the Nintendo DS brain-trainer Dr. Kawashima, 36 months to top Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Comparatively, it took Modern Warfare 2 two just over 10 months to outpace Dr. Kawashima.

Since its release in November, Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 has been outside the UK's top-10 selling titles for only three weeks, and in June, Activision reported that the game had sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

The original Kane & Lynch peaked at No. 14 on the GFK chart track in 2007, making Dog Days a surprise hit for Eidos and Square Enix. The U.S. videogame retail charts for August are expected from the NPD Group in the second week of September.

Sharkey says: Every time we see new milestones reached by Modern Warfare 2, I immediately shake my head. I still can't believe Activision sacked the guys who created the game. Also of note: Modern Warfare 2 holds the title as the most pre-ordered videogame of all time, but according to VG Chartz, Halo: Reach is on pace to top it.
