According to a new report, Gearbox is planning to launch the sequel to its cell-shaded sandbox RPG, Borderlands, next year -- and an official announcement from publisher 2K Games is coming soon.

Citing an anonymous source "close to the game," Eurogamer reports that the long-rumored sequel is now in development and should see the light of day sometime in 2012.

Released in October 2009, Borderlands garnered critical praise for its unique, cell-shaded look, open world, and treasure trove of loot. The commercial response was equally strong, and according to 2K Games, the game has sold more than 3 million copies to date.

Eurogamer did not provide any details on Borderlands 2 other than to say that an official announcement from 2K Games will be made soon.

Spy Guy says: Gearbox takes the one-game-at-a-time approach, and the next title in the queue is Aliens: Colonial Marines. In June, the studio and publisher Sega said that game will ship sometime in spring 2012. That sets Brothers in Arms: Furious Four up for mid-2012 and Borderlands 2 for a late 2012 release. So, what would you like to see in a Borderlands sequel?
