The Stimulus Package launched yesterday on the Xbox 360, offering gamers five additional Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 maps for $15. Not to be outdone, DICE released VIP 2, its own free map upgrades for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and claimed it will never charge fans for new maps.

DICE Senior Producer Patrick Bach made the claim in an interview with Xbox World 360 magazine. "We don't ever want to charge for our maps and insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together," Bach said. "We're owned by EA but we're still very much DICE."

In all fairness to Activision and Infinity Ward, the VIP 2 map pack included new modes for existing maps, but did not bring any new battlefields to Battlefield. Further, as part of EA's Project $10, those that buy Battlefield: Bad Company 2 used do have to pay $15 for the additional DLC.

Bach added that a generous portion of DLC is slated for Bad Company 2 in the future. We'll see if EA can hold DICE's promise.

Sharkey says: I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I don't mind paying for DLC provided the core content in the game is strong and the DLC will add a significant amount of gaming hours. Of course, I'd prefer it was all free. I'd also like to possess the power to control magnetism.
