DICE took the stage at the Cologne Palladium at Gamescom in Germany today and demoed the new co-op mode in Battlefield 3. But for many Battlefield fans, the big news came when the studio finally unveiled the first gameplay footage of BF3 air combat in high-flying action.

Promising to take playing Battlefield together to a whole new level, DICE provided a lengthy demo of the new co-op mode. The devs worked together to extract a prisoner from a heavily guarded apartment building before escorting him out of the city while under heavy fire.

DICE noted that all co-op matches would be tied to Battlefield 3's new Battlelog social network, allowing players to track their performance and try to beat friends' scores.

The studio concluded their demonstration with a the new Caspian Border Multiplayer Gameplay Trailer, posted above, which provided the first footage of Battlefield 3 air combat. We'll have the jet dog fight live just as soon as the trailer is available.

Battlefield 3 is in development for Windows PCs, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The game is set for launch on October 25.

Spy Guy says: The co-op mode will be fun, but it didn't look like it will compete with the upgraded Spec Ops mode coming to Modern Warfare 3. But the air combat footage looked amazing, and it looks like Battlefield 3 will raise the shooter bar this fall. What do you think of the footage?
