In an interview with Assassin's Creed II creative director Patrice Desilets at Kotaku, the developer revealed that AC2's DLC was originally meant to be part of the main game.

Desilets explained that the decision to turn the planned content into DLC was made in mid-2009, when the dev team felt that it needed more time to finish the main game. Patrice feels the DLC decision was the right one, and that making two missions DLC enabled him to "remove some stress to the team while giving more to fans and people who like Assassin's Creed."

In addition to missions 12 and 13, Desilets also had to cut the mission replay feature that would allow players to replay any mission in the game. Again, the decision to cut the content was made to give time for more thorough testing.

The Battle of Flori and the Bonfire of the Vanities DLC are set to release in January and February, respectively.

Tyler says: I did notice the missing chunks of the game, but I chalked it up to being a part of either DLC (which was the right guess) or some other kind of promotional alternate-reality-game/viral marketing thing. I'm glad it turned out to be actual playable missions, and not my dumb ARG idea. I don't know about you folks, but there wasn't one moment in AC2 where I felt the game was holding back content. If anything I felt overwhelmed by the amount of stuff to do. So yes, I think Desilets made the right decision, but how do you feel?
