Earlier this week the Spore Creature Creator (see see our writeup) was thrust on the world, and the world thrusted back. Immediately the Internet's most intelligent and renowned sought to use this amazing creative tool to design enormous penises. The only thing that surprises me about this is how many people seem to be surprised by it. We're talking about the Internet here! It's a network of penis experts.

After the initial penile euphoria of the first 10 minutes subsided, Internet authorities put aside their juvenile behavior and settled in to use the Spore Creature Creator for bigger and better things. Like the guys who figured out how to create creatures that looked like two monsters in the act of getting it on. The literal "Beast with two backs." Now that takes talent.

Of course, of the more than 600,000 creatures uploaded to the Internet so far, the vast majority are family-friendly. I figure by the time the game comes out in September, the wave of groinbeasts will subside. Then again, it's impossible to underestimate the immaturity of the Internet.

Bring on the Weirdness

So many creatures are being uploaded to the Sporepedia right now that if you're looking at page one of a listing of the newest creatures, by the time you click to page two all the creatures from page one have already scrolled to page three. Confused? Imagine you have to maintain that database.
Naturally people are using the Creature Creator to recreate their favorite videogame icons. Already most of the World of Warcraft bestiary is popping up. Check out the awesome Tauren on the right. (Save to your desktop and import him into your Creature Creator to see him in action.)
It amazes me to think that there are dozens of people around the world who have already agonized with themselves: "Does that look like Q*Bert's nose? No? Howabout this?" You'd think some videogame characters are easier than others. Kirby? He's just a big... pink... circle, right? Apparently, he's not so easy to figure out.

The Good    The Bad    The FUGLY

Equally instructive are the many attempts at Pikachu -- there are over 150 already. Didn't the Creature Creator just come out on Monday?

Impressive    Accurate    THE STUFF OF NIGHTMARES

I tried looking up "Solid Snake" and discovered hundreds of results. Unfortunately, almost all of them were actual snakes. Hey how difficult is it to create a snake in Creature Creator, huh people? It's about as hard as it is to roll one out of Play-Doh. By the way, the Mario to the right? Terrifying.
A quick search for "The Simpsons" reveals a few hundred Homers, most of which are creepy lumbering bobbleheads like the one to the left. But the Homer here on the right? Gotta give mad props to that guy. Then I gotta find his dealer.
But making "Simpsons" characters seems almost too droll. It's obvious. Personally, I gotta tip my hat to the genius who decided to model the Hedonism Bot from "Futurama," seen to the right. That's awesome. What's more awesome? There are already several Hedonism Bots in the database. I love the Internet.
Will Wright himself guessed that everyone would use Spore to try to recreate stuff from their favorite franchises. He was right! There are already 800+ creatures tagged with "Star Wars." Some of them are really impressive. How the hell did they get the textures right on R2D2?

   Piano Player    Tauntaun    For reals

Of course, other models are more of the WTF variety:

   Star Destroyer?    You're joking.    OMFG

I'll leave you with one parting gift. Ladies and gentlemen: The Vacuum Cleaner Beast. Note the location of the mouth. If I ever discover this in my travels I'm going to nuke the planet from orbit. Got some creatures to show off? Hit the Spore forum thread!
