God of War: Chains of Olympus Basics

The Beauty of Air Combos
Early in the game, enemies topple over without much resistance, but later enemies get more resilient and with fight back even while taking shots to the face. That is, they'll fight back if they can, and launching the enemies into the air prevents them from counter attacking. While not all enemies can be launched for air combos, the majority of them can be. Whenever possible, launch an enemy into the air for a mid-air flurry. Not only will you keep that enemy entirely busy with your attack, but you'll also avoid most of the attacks from other enemies below you.

Using the Gauntlet of Zeus
It won't be until mid-way through the game that you acquire the Gauntlet of Zeus, but once you do earn it you should definitely learn to use it. Unlike other God of War secondary weapons, the Gauntlet of Zeus is actually very good. Power it up and use heavy attacks, like the Olympic Strike (L + SQUARE), for tons of damage and causing enemy staggers that the Blades of Chaos just aren't capable of.

The Lightning Run (L + CIRCLE) is an easy to ignore technique that's definitely worth learning. You can execute the Lightning Run, continue holding L, and cancel and re-start the run by double-tapping CIRCLE to continually run forward. If you bump into an enemy while repeating this button combination, Kratos will automatically grab 'em. Alternatively, you can cancel the run with the Lightning Thrash for lots of damage, or go into the Lightning Surge to knock an opponent into the air. As the opponent drops, ready an Olympic Strike to create a sort of alley-oop combo.

Spending Red Orbs
Red orbs flow like water in Chains of Olympus, so don't shy away from spending them soon. However, you will still need to ration the red orbs and spend them on the best upgrades. We always suggest upgrading your weapons (Blades of Chaos and Gauntlet of Zeus) before spending orbs on magic attacks. As well, we highly recommend upgrading the Sun Shield as soon as possible. Upgrading these items gives you unlimited use of the new abilities, whereas upgraded magic attacks are still limited by your meter. In fact, it's easy to get through the entire game without once upgrading your magic.
