Taking inspiration directly from the comic book series and tapping Eisner Award-winning writer Matt Fraction to serve as story consultant, Sega is promising an authentic God of Thunder experience in the first solo videogame adventure for Marvel's Thor.

Sega of America announced Thor: The Video Game (ugh) today, describing the title as an epic third-person adventure game that will delve deep into the heroic tales of the Thor universe.

"We are proud to be bringing Thor to his first solo video game adventure," Gary Knight, senior VP of marketing at Sega Europe and Sega America, said in a statement. "Thor: The Video Game will finally bring the immense power of this iconic hero to lifelong fans, and introduce the God of Thunder to a whole new audience as a true Marvel superhero."

A rundown from Sega:
Players will take on an array of ancient enemies and beasts from the many worlds of Norse mythology by using different battle strategies and elemental powers. The sacred Mjolnir, Thor's legendary hammer, will allow players to command the powers of the storm: wind, thunder, and lightning. By earning Valor in combat throughout the game, players will also be able to select from a wider range of abilities, acquire new attacks, powers and upgrades.
Thor: The Video Game (ugh again) is being developed for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and DS, and PSP. The game is set to release alongside the in-development Thor movie during the summer of 2011.

Sharkey says: A cool comic character with some great stories. Unfortunately, Sega has failed to impress thus far under its videogame contract with Marvel. Hulk and two Iron Man games have been mediocre at best. Here's to hoping Thor manages to break the trend. The title gives me little hope.
