There's a decent chance that Rock Band creators Harmonix are following Activision Blizzard's trend of releasing band-specific standalone versions of its franchise according to a post over on MTV Multiplayer.

Rumor has it that a new Rock Band title featuring the works of Green Day is coming down the pike.
Billy Joe, the lead singer of Green Day, broke the news on Kevin and Bean's Breakfast radio show on KROQ 106.7 FM, that they're collaborating for a "Rock Band" game.

It would certainly explain the lack of playable Green Day songs in either "Rock Band" or "Guitar Hero."
While Harmonix and MTV Games work to put the final touches to The Beatles: Rock Band, does this open up an avenue whereby the likes of Guitar Hero: Metallica and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will not be alone on retail shelves?

Will Billie Joe et al be given the royal Rock Band treatment?

Bryn says: I read some user comments over on the other sites about this news, and there's a little dissent among the troops to say the least. This idea of pegging a single band and working up a standalone product around them isn't much more than an excuse to milk the franchise.

Why not just release a full Green Day track pack instead? Do we really need to look forward to a future of full-priced versions of the same game featuring different bands? Is Green Day worthy of the same treatment that The Beatles are getting?
