Prototype

Fair

Violence catches your attention, but only for so long. Read Review

In Prototype, players take control of Alex Mercer – a dark, genetically mutated shape-shifter with no memory of his past, hell-bent on solving the mystery of his existence as he tears through a densely populated New York City moving with Parkour-style fluidity and consuming anything that gets in his way.

'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay allows gamers the choice to either blend in with the population and covertly progress through the story, or fully unleash Alex’s powers, and move through New York City like a walking slaughterhouse, taking control of military vehicles, and causing destruction at every turn.

The Consensus: Prototype Review

PS3 Reviews | Jun 16, 2009

Lots of games are violent, but Prototype is ultra-violent, filled with bloody carnage that leaves no one safe. I was a little upset at first that I couldn't even try to be good, but I felt pretty liberated once I simply accepted that I was going to kill innocents as often -- if not more so -- than I killed enemies. Turning people and objects into baby food is actually a lot of fun in a ridiculous sort of way, and almost make Prototype a game I could recommend to lots of people. But a host of flaws -- in the gameplay, the storytelling, and the design -- repeatedly brought me down throughout my time with it. Read More »

Pre-E3 2009: New Prototype Gameplay Footage

PS3 News | May 21, 2009

While Gerald's new Prototype preview might describe what it's like to be a sociopathic menace, in the end it can't make you understand the same way as a video. Luckily for you, we just got our hands on three minutes of in-game footage that shows just how much destruction you can wreak upon the citizens of New York City. Read More »

Pre-E3 2009: Hands-on with Prototype

PS3 Previews | May 21, 2009

I recently had the chance to play Prototype, a sandbox-style action game from the team at Radical Entertainment. I was immediately struck by how similar the game was to a previous game of theirs that I enjoyed: The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Prototype may not be marketed as such, but it plays and feels like a superhero game. Read More »

Pre-E3 2009: Hands-On With Prototype

PS3 Previews | Apr 8, 2009

I'm late for the demo as I step into the dimly lit room. I've never seen Prototype before, but I'm excited to be here as it's the first time press are getting a chance to pick up and play as Alex Mercer, the game's protagonist. Here are a few things I've learned about Prototype now that I've had a chance to play it for myself...

New York City hasn't been replicated, but the team at Radical has created a decent approximation of the bustling metropolis. Most important though, they've created a city that's tailor-made to take advantage of Alex's ability to run up buildings, glide (yes, glide) through the air, and make staggeringly huge jumps. Most of the time travel is, for me, a big downside to open-world games. In Prototype, on the other hand, on-foot travel is so invigorating that it feels more enticing than any vehicular transportation or fast-travel could ever be. You may be travelling under the power of your own two legs, but goddamn are those two legs up to the task. Read More »
