Square Enix unveiled one of its debut IPs at E3 today, third-person action shooter Mindjack. The sci-fi thriller is set in the not-too-distant future and features a unique, "Matrix" Agent-like gameplay mechanic: the ability to hack into the minds of soldiers, citizens, and technology and control them to do your bidding.

In development by Feelplus, Mindjack puts players into the role of a Mind Hacker, a character with the ability to make just about any NPC on screen into your own personal play thing.

A synopsis from Square Enix:
A new era. Sophisticated and complex technologies are now contributing to the advancements of mankind. However, the world's governments are crumbling, new corrupt powers arise and conspiracies proliferate. The truth behind the proscribed technology could destroy the very core of humanity. Join a rogue team of agents as they fight for survival and entangle themselves deeper into the mystery.
The publisher is also promising a unique online experience, where players can take their solo campaigns and transition them seamlessly into cooperative play. Oh, and there are mechs. Big, badass looking mechs that may or may not be hackable and may or may not be controlled by giant apes. Check the trailer and you'll see what we mean.

Mindjack is being developed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. No release date was announced.

Sharkey says: An interesting twist. From the gameplay trailer, it looks like mind hacking will be utilized to access different areas, get a better angle on foes, and dump bullet riddled corpses. And I'm still not sure what to make of that giant mech ape, but I definitely want to try and hack it.
