Shacknews is reporting that a "very reliable source" involved with 3D Realms has confirmed that the company is shutting down. Their source says the studio is shuttering as the result of a funding shortfall, but so far no official statements have been made.

I feel this piggy's pain.

Those who don't know the name 3D Realms off the tops of their heads have likely heard of the company's most famous character, Duke Nukem. 3D Realms had been working on a revival of the franchise for years now, and it was supposed to release "soon." But now it appears to be killed for good. That is, unless another studio and publisher pick it up should the rumors prove to be true.

Anthony says: I'm tired of reading/writing sad videogame industry news. Every day it seems like another story arises about a studio closing its doors for good. If this proves to be true, I'd just like to say I hope for the best for the employees there... I know what it's like to be laid off in this economy.
