Announced during a financial meeting in February of 2000, Star Trek Online was slated to become Activision's first persistent online title for the PlayStation 2.
Expected to launch simultaneously with the PC version sometime in late 2001, Star Trek Online met its first hurdle just weeks after its announcement when developer Verant Interactive left the project to work on LucasArts' Star Wars Galaxies instead. Unfortunately for Activision and potential fans, the publisher never found another development team to pick up where Verant left off and Star Trek Online was quietly cancelled less than six months after it was originally acknowledged.
A very different Star Trek Online project has since been created by Perpetual Entertainment.
