So many RPGs have so much in common. Young cranky-pants for a main character, a grand quest that begins after a damsel is put in distress, a wise man who is more than he seems, a scoundrel with a heart of gold, and toss in a foe who's pretty effeminate and ambiguous rather than full-on evil. Sound familiar? Sure enough, Namco's latest, Tales of Legendia, is no exception and has all of the aforementioned cliches, but good golly, it's sure feeling like a blast to play.

This title has so much going for it despite the "been there, done that" story, which bears more than a passing resemblance to its predecessors in the series. We meet our protagonists as they're sailing the rough seas during a storm when they come under attack. Our hero, Senel Coolidge, goes to ensure his companions' safety and battles their assailant. After Senel puts the hurt onto this weird bat-looking clown, we find out that the person he's protecting is his younger sister, Shirley. Soon after, a titan structure comes through the foggy night, causing Senel and Shirley to wreck their ride.

We meet up with our duo as they're strewn upon the shore of an island. Shirley falls ill as a result to her inexplicable allergy to salt water. As Senel is shaking out of his post-shipwreck funk, he starts to panic over his sibling's well-being when a good samaritan, Will Raynard, comes to investigate. Senel is pointed to a source of fresh water so he can rinse the salt off Shirley and it is there that all sorts of revelations are made: Shirley is a maiden of light, a "shining one" who holds the key to ruling the island; the island itself is a giant ship called "The Legacy" and upon Senel and Shirley's arrival, a great lighthouse has lit up after ages of darkness, which marks the return of the Merines, ruler of The Legacy, who Will believes is Shirley.

Sure as shooting, as soon as we find out that Shirley is potentially a Merines, some femme dude (he's wearing a shawl, for crying out loud!), comes along and demand that Shirley comes to him, but before he can claim her as his own, a bandit kidnaps her while everyone is distracted. Cue up our adventure; it's under way.
