There is no reason to not get Midway Arcade Treasures II -- unless you own all of the 20+ games on the disc. But even then, why deal with swapping between consoles and sorting through old discs when Midway has collected them into one nice package so you can keep your ass hunkered down as you switch between games? Not only that, but Midway has taken the effort to port these games onto every next-gen console -- PS2, Xbox, and GameCube for $19.99 (plus a nifty bonus DVD).
Last year, with the launch of its predecessor, Midway Arcade Treasures, having reaching unprecedented popularity, Arcade Treasures II traces similar steps in delivering the most popular retro games during the Cross Colors and parachute pants days (late-'80s, early-'90s for the folks who weren't around yet).
This multiplayer collection allows for one- to four-player format. In addition, on Xbox Live, players will be able to upload their high scores and ultimately decide the world champion. And Midway has also thrown in a bonus DVD containing original commercials, making of the game videos, and launch trailers.
So kick back and take a nostalgic trip down memory lane or have a little video-game history session, and remember where it all came from:
A.P.B. (1987) - Be Officer Bob as he pulls over wreckless drivers and hands out speeding tickets.
Arch Rivals (1989) - Basketball game that hurls you into basketbrawl by punching, kicking, and tripping opposing teams.
Championship Sprint (1986) - Drive laps around the track and pick up wrenches as upgrades and beat out your opponents.
Cyberball 2072 (1989) - Football in the year 2072 with cyborg players and teams.
Gauntlet 2 (1986) - A classic multiplayer collaboration between wizards and warriors triumphing over evil.
Hard Drivin' (1989) - The realistic driving simulator that puts you in the driver's seat. Came complete with a speed track and stunt track, instant replay, and saved the best player's course maneuverings to allow you to compete against his "phantom."
Mortal Kombat (1992) - The fighting game that started it all. Mortal Kombat's over-the-top violence and carnage, with it's blood-splurting blows and torso-ripping finishing-moves, makes MK a classic in defining violence in today's games.
Mortal Kombat II (1993) - The follow-up to the one of the most popular fighting games, itself, became even more popular than the original with improvements on the fight system that allowed for more flexible and faster gameplay.
Mortal Kombat III (1995) - Third in the series, MK III came out with a secret hidden character, Smoke, and hidden "Animalities" which changes your character into an animal to perform fatalities.
NARC (1988) - The original side-scrollin', drug-bustin', anti-dope dealin' game that helped make the "Just Say No" campaign, well, cool.
Pit Fighter (1990) - Fight your way to "ultimate fighter" as a wrestler, kick boxer or third-degree blackbelt in this raw pit-fightin' action with cool graphics.
Primal Rage (1994) - Head-to-head battle with seven dinosaurs and nearly 70 moves for each.
Rampage World Tour (1997) - George, Lizzy and Ralph are transformed into monsters and stomp their way around the world destroying cities!
Spy Hunter 2 (1987) - A two-player 3D driving and shooting game which allows you to collect up to four weapons at once.
Steel Talons (1991) - The cool 3D helicopter sim allows for two-player co-op or head-to-head. The use of polygons in the graphics made Steel Talons one of the most technologically advanced games of its time.
STUN Runner (1989) - Shoot or avoid enemies that cross your path as you, the STUN runner, jet through various time trials.
Timber (1984) - Run around the screen chopping down trees as you avoid bears tossing beehives at you.
Total Carnage (1991) - Desert Storm themed shooter where you save reporters and civilians from General Ahkboob's army.
Wizard of Wor (1981) - An old classic, if you can remember, of mazes where you move around shooting the creatures inside.
Xenophobe (1987) - Wander around a space station that's split into three sections, and shoot as many aliens as you can!
Xybots (1987) - Shoot robots while running through a 3D maze, and upgrade as you go.
