Gladius is a strategy/RPG with a very unusual trait: it was designed and programmed in America. I salute the suits at LucasArts for having the guts to enter a console genre dominated by Japanese developers, and the skill to deliver a game that competes with the best in the category. After spending the past few years beating the daylights out of its Star Wars franchise and teasing us with an occasional Indiana Jones or Monkey Island title, LucasArts is branching out. Now that LucasArts has decided to step away from an all-Star-Wars-all-the-time diet, it's almost as if it's looking for as diverse a product line as possible. Action, humor, and strategy are all in the offing -- it's like waiting for the new season of Must-See TV. Now, while a rumble on the sandy floor of a classic arena may not be too far from the last Star Wars flick, the design and presentation of Gladius is light-years away from what most associate with LucasArts.
