Fresh off of a stellar Winter Olympics performance, Sega's iconic blue hedgehog is racing back to the Nintendo Wii and DS handheld this holiday season in Sonic Colors.

Sega announced the latest Sonic adventure will feature theme park inspired worlds and a new colorful alien race, Wisps, that offer gamers a number of new Sonic power-ups.

"In Sonic Colors, players run at supersonic speed through incredible looking planets each with their own unique visual style," Gary Knight, senior VP of marketing at Sega, said in a statement. "In addition to the classic Sonic gameplay style, the colorful new Wisp power-ups offer a fresh new way of exploring these worlds and helps make Sonic faster than ever before."

From Sega:
An extraordinary amusement park has been seen orbiting around the home planet of Sonic the Hedgehog, and rumors are spreading that an alien race of Wisps, who have a unique colorful energy, are being held captive there by the evil Dr. Eggman. Soon after arriving at the amusement park, Sonic discovers he is able to use these mysterious alien forces to help the Wisps escape.
Combining both the classic 2D Sonic perspective with 3D elements, Sonic colors will utilize the DS's dual screens. Sega did not specify a launch date beyond "holiday 2010."

Sharkey says: Sega has attempted to take the Sonic franchise in a number of different directions -- more than a few of them winding up as dead ends. Power-ups, and a mix of 2D and 3D racing sounds like a good mix of the traditional with some simple, fun additions.
