Pokemon HeartGold / SoulSilver Guide

by Colin Moriarty

Back in 2000, some of the most-loved and best-received Pokemon games in history came out for the Game Boy Color. Pokemon Gold and Silver were direct follow-ups to the fabled and outrageously-popular Pokemon Blue and Red, which came out Stateside in 1998, not only revitalizing the stumbling Game Boy in one fell swoop, but forever engraining the importance of the Pokemon franchise to Nintendo and ardent handheld gamers alike.

Fast-forward ten years, and now, we have the much-anticipated remakes of Pokemon Gold and Silver. Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, exclusively for the Nintendo DS, are finally here. Now, gamers who missed Gold and Silver the first time around can play them in all of their enhanced glory, while those of us who have fond memories of the Game Boy Color classic can relive it all over again.

Our guide covers it all, with a robust basics section, a complete walkthrough that holds your hand through the entire game, and much, much more. The guide is rounded-out by a complete Pokedex, information on Side Quests, and even a TM and HM compendium.

So, let's get going! It's time to catch 'em all!

» Q: Which Pokemon should I start out with? Cyndaquil, Totodile, or Chikorita?
A: At the beginning of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, you'll be able to choose on of three Pokemon from Professor Elm -- Cyndaquil, Totodile or Chikorita. The choice you make, of course, is entirely up to you. This walkthrough, however, is based entirely on choosing a Cyndaquil, which, in our estimation, makes the game easiest for you. Of course, you won't be at a huge disadvantage if you choose one of the other two instead (indeed, they will give you advantages in other situations), but if you want to do what we did to write this guide, and if you want what we think will be the easiest time through the game, we implore you to go with Cyndaquil.
» Q: Where do I find HM03 (Surf)?
A: HM03 Surf is found in Ecruteak City. For more information, please go here.
» Q: Where do I find HM06 (Rock Smash)?
A: HM06 Rock Smash is found to the west of Violet City, and east of Routes 36 and 37. For more information, please go here.
» Q: I'm in the Johto region. How do I get to the Kanto region?
A: Pokemon Gold and Silver on Game Boy Color were the first games in the core Pokemon series that allowed you to go through two separate regions, earning sixteen badges in the process (as opposed to traversing a single region, and earning only eight badges). Naturally, the remakes of those two games, HeartGold and SoulSilver, keep that traditional alive. However, to get to Kanto, you'll first need to earn all eight Johto-region badges, and defeat the Pokemon League. Thereafter, you should acquire an item from Professor Elm that will allow you to take a ship to Johto from Olivine City.
» Q: How do I fight water-based enemies? And how do I cross water?
A: These two questions will, obviously, require two separate answers. And we're going to answer the second question first. To cross over water, you must have HM03, which will teach an eligible Pokemon in your party the Surf ability (HM03 itself is found in Ecruteak City). Surf can be used in battle, but its use outside of battle is to let you walk over any water in the game. This will let you cross water to reach out-of-the-way locations like Cianwood City, for instance. So, water-based enemies can be fought by using Surf, since walking over water is equivalent to walking through tall grasses -- there are wild Pokemon abound. Of course, another way to fight (and capture) water-based Pokemon without having to use Surf is to use a fishing rod. Various rods, like the Old Rod and Good Rod can be found at various points through the game. See the Side Quests section of the guide for more information on those.
