If one needs proof that the infamous adventures of Mario and Luigi never get old, they only need to look at the newest installment to the series, MARIO & LUIGI 2 by Alphadream for the Nintendo DS, in which the brothers find themselves traveling through time to rescue Princess Peach. As if this storyline isn’t fantastic enough by itself, Mario and Luigi run into younger versions of themselves and the princess. Players must then control both the adult and young versions of the characters, which can lead to some interesting, and often hilarious, experiences in this role-playing game. Also, by allowing the player to control two different characters on two different screens at one time, the game opens up new capabilities for players to solve the puzzles and battles in a way that hasn’t previously been possible. However, controlling MARIO & LUIGI 2 isn’t as difficult as the double controls make it seem. For those players who aren’t as experienced in participating in this type of role-playing game, the puzzles and other obstacles are clearly marked at the beginning of the game. These clues and directions gradually disappear as the player navigates the game so that it doesn’t become too tedious. While MARIO & LUIGI 2 probably isn’t the best choice for serious role playing gamers who might think it a little simple and childish, it’s perfect for those players who are looking for a game that is a fun and exciting blast into their gaming past.
