Dragon Quest IX Guide

by Colin Moriarty

It can't be denied. Dragon Quest is arguably the most important RPG series to ever grace the realm of gaming. While Ultima pioneered role-playing games on the PC, Dragon Quest did the same for the genre on consoles, pre-dating well-known RPG franchises like Final Fantasy by several years. Through eight core games over a course of over twenty years, Dragon Quest (once known as Dragon Warrior in the west), while never quite as popular in the United States as it is in Japan, still did well with niche RPG fans Stateside.

Dragon Quest is an old-school, straight-forward grinder that requires an acute attention to statistics, and an undaunting willingness to sink scores of hours into getting through the game in one piece. The hardcore nature of Dragon Quest has always been the hallmark of the series, and with the Nintendo DS-exclusive Dragon Quest IX, that hasn't changed one iota. And with an RPG that can be as lengthy and difficult as Dragon Quest IX is, you may just require our help. Our guide will hold your hand through the entire game, with a complete walkthrough, side quest information, and the down-low on everything from equipment to monsters. You won't find a more complete Dragon Quest IX guide anywhere.

Common Questions & Answers
How do I access Dragon Quest IX's multiplayer modes?
It's simple. As soon as you arrive at Stornway Castle (and its surrounding village), you'll be able to access Dragon Quest IX's multiplayer modes. Head to the inn there, and seek out an angelic character named Pavo. It's through Pavo that you'll be able to gain access to the multiplayer sections of the game, should you choose to do so. Stornway isn't necessarily the only place you can access multiplayer, but it's the first place you'll be able to, and you won't be able to play multiplayer until you get there.
I lost half of my money after my party got wiped out in battle. What gives?
If you die in battle, and your entire party is wiped-out, you'll lose half of the gold currently in your wallet. That's just the way it goes. To combat this, simply do one of three things. Either spend your money as you earn it (not exactly practical), ensure that you never fall in battle (difficult to do, especially in areas you've never been before), or best yet, store your gold at banks strewn around the world. The banks, just like banks in real life, are interconnected. So if you store your money at one bank in Town X, you'll be able to access it at Towns Y and Z. The latter is the only truly practical solution to not losing money if you happen to fall in battle. Be sure to utilize banks as soon as they become available (which is when you first encounter Stornway).
How do I change classes? Where do I go to do so?
Dragon Quest IX allows you to change the classes of not only the ancillary characters in your party, but your main character as well. However, you won't be able to do so immediately. After recruiting a party from Stornway's inn, you'll be locked-in to your initial classes until you reach Alltrades Abbey. After arriving at Alltrades Abbey and liberating Abbot Jack from the Tower of Trades, you can switch any character's class at will, and as many times as you want. You'll of course be limited to what classes are currently available to you, but once you reach Alltrades Abbey, return there at any time to switch classes at will.
