It's been nearly one full year since gamers were treated to the very first gameplay footage of Nintendo's new The Legend of Zelda project for the GameCube. E3 2004 was the venue, but today at the Game Developers Conference here in San Francisco, Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata wowed the crowd during his Heart of the Gamer keynote speech by presenting a brand-new trailer of Link doing his thing.

The video -- which is available right here -- is a full 90 seconds of pure Zelda joy. The Legend of Zelda is easily the most anticipated game of 2005 across all platforms, and the exciting new footage detailed new environments, enemy battles, horse-back riding sequences, and much more besides.

Kicking off the footage, we find an adult incarnation of Link treading water in a beautifully real-time rendered pool in a forest. Diving below the surface the movie transitions to a sunlight-flooded grove where Link and a Goron creature can be seen conversing. Flipping out to another scene, Link bends over and picks up a small kitten before running off into the distance.

Stone statue comes to life

Changing again to a darkened dungeon-style location, Link can be seen intrepidly descending a flight of stairs, only to be caught off guard by a stone statue which springs into life and attacks. More action sequences play depicting Link performing huge leaping overhead sword attacks, bow-and-arrow attacks, and a cool horse-back chase sequence which sees him being pursued by multiple foes riding giant boar mounts. The enemies are slinging spears and flaming arrows at Link, and before long Link is in another combat situation facing off against skeletal hounds which crumple with a bone-shattering sound when felled.

Another Goron character makes an appearance in what seems to be some kind of sword-training sequence. Link defends himself with his shield while trying to land blows on the wily Goron. Another dungeon environment finds Link battling two larger mobs while another cutscene shows us a collection of undead enemies located in a sewer-type environment. With twisted hollow faces, these guys are not too unlike The Army of the Dead seen in The Return of the King movie.
