Gandhara panel

Description

This architectural element was probably part of a series of narrative reliefs decorating a stupa, illustrating scenes from the Buddha’s wonderful life. Carved from schist, it is easy to recognise the region’s craftsmanship. In this scene of adoration flanked by a column with acanthus leaves, the Buddha is easily recognisable in meditation, enthroned at the centre of the scene. He is surrounded by rich devotees wearing turbans and adorned with jewels.
