Our Summary of Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler

Anne Tyler's novel 'Breathing Lessons' opens with the main character's reflections of life and wastefulness. Ira, the main character, is self-employed. His wife, Maggie, works as a nurse in a nursing home. Ira is concerned about his life; he believes that the world is wasteful. He also believes that he has wasted his life. Before Tyler moves through the novel, she inserts the potential of suspense. Maggie listens to a radio program and believes that the caller announcing an engagement is her former daughter-in-law. With this news in hand, they both leave to attend a funeral. This introductory information sets the foundation for the rest of the work. Tyler structures the work into three parts, signifying major activities. The struggles within the first part include the tension between Maggie and Ira and Maggie's fantasy about a new life. The second part reveals Ira's attitude about life. The last part reveals Maggie's attitude as she reflects on her life. By the end of 'Breathing Lessons,' lies are exposed and the couple takes the car trip back home.
