U.S. State Parks System
There are currently 1,906 U.S. State parks in the U.S., with a combined area of about 3.3 million acres, according to the National Association of State Directors. That's an average of just under 4 miles per site.
Iowa State Parks System
There are 63 state parks and recreational areas in Iowa. They can be divided into two groups based on how they are managed. The first group are governed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the second group are governed by the county in which they are.
The park system has a long history of supporting conservation efforts. In fact, it was one of the first government agencies to recognize Iowa's importance in protecting natural areas.
