United States stormed to victory in the women’s 4x400m relay to wrap up the track action at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as Great Britain secured a bronze medal.
A matter of minutes after the United States men had taken gold in a thrilling battle with Botswana in the 4x400m, the women’s team were a class apart.
Alexis Holmes brought the baton home in the anchor leg to secure the win for USA from Netherlands and Great Britain.
Shamier Little was on the first leg for USA and handed over the baton in the lead to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.
From that point on, the race was over as a contest barring accidents. McLaughlin-Levrone’s pedigree as the 400m hurdles winner saw her stretch clear from the pack - as she ran a blistering 47.71s.
The only moment of alarm came at the start of the third leg as Gabrielle Thomas collided with the curb. She remained upright to extend USA’s lead.
Holmes took over the baton with a massive advantage and was able to coast home, as USA stopped the clock in an area record of 3:15.27.
While the Americans were in a class of their own, the battle was raging for the remaining two medals.
Ireland, Team GB and Netherlands were in the hunt after Jamaica dropped the baton.
Femke Bol was on the final leg for the Dutch and she closed down GB and Ireland before passing them in the final 15 metres to secure silver.
Amber Anning held her form in the final 100m to bring home a bronze medal for GB in a national record of 3:19.72.
Victoria Ohuruogu was on the first leg for Team GB, and she spoke about the depth in 400m running in the country.
“It means a lot,” Ohuruogu told Eurosport. “We have been knocking on the door for a few years now, so quite relieved to get the record with these girls.
“We are really strong in 400m right now, so we are just thankful and able to get the record.”
Anning added: "It was way closer than I thought but the girls yesterday did an amazing job, got us here and honestly these girls set it up for me to get it done.
"I’m just grateful to come away from my first Olympics with two Olympic medals, it’s just unbelievable and just so much pride."
