The event featured the latest in quantum computing and communication, highlighted by a showcase from the TIS Quantum Team. A key takeaway was the critical role of error correction in making quantum computing practical. Addressing this challenge moves us closer to realizing the full potential of quantum technology.

Fault-tolerant embedding of quantum circuits on hardware architectures via swap gates

In this blog post, we discuss our recent work, which proposes a protocol that enables quantum circuits to preserve their fault-tolerant properties when implemented on connectivity-constrained devices. This allows us to fault-tolerantly embed error-correction codes, such as the surface code, onto different devices, facilitating their implementation on near-term quantum devices featuring local connectivities.

Our team has demonstrated that, by using reasonably well-behaved Swap gates, one can preserve the fault-tolerance design of an abstract quantum circuit when mapping it to a physical circuit with a different topology. This property is particularly relevant when working with the planar surface code on hardware with heavy hexagonal lattices.
