Directed by Alan Bridges
UK 1965
Based on a story by Doctor Who legend Robert Holmes, Public Eye creator Roger
Marshall scripts this cult sci-fi thriller from Merton Park studios. Starring
Edward Judd memorably powerful in
The Day the Earth Caught Fire actor/writer Lyndon Brook and cult actress
and cabaret artiste Yoko Tani, this immensely popular '60s drama is featured
here in a brand-new High Definition remaster from original film elements in its
as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. *** An alien spaceship crashes near a rural hospital. When the aliens are taken to the hospital, a mysterious force field suddenly appears around it. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Network use a linear PCM mono track (16-bit) in the
original English language. It is another advancement in the film's audio
and score by Bernard Ebbinghouse (Tales
That Witness Madness, Alan Bridges' Act of Murder, parts
of
The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre and others similar to this
genre.) It sounds clean impacting on the viewing experience with some
rocket-related depth. Network offer optional English subtitles on
their Region 'B'
Blu-ray.
The Network
Blu-ray
I'm a huge fan of this
genre from the 50's and 60's... especially the Brit variety of
sci-fi gems (see
Night of the Big Heat and
Island of Terror). This isn't spectacular but I enjoyed the
'B'-film efficiency and mystery-filled compact running time. The minimal
effects are part of the nostalgia. Seeing Edward Judd profusely sweating
certainly evokes
The Day the Earth Caught Fire. The Network
Blu-ray
is of their usual standard - a full a/v upgrade over SD but still,
relatively, pragmatic with few extras. The price usually reflects that and we recommend
for fans of the genre.
