USA 1973
2006 is the 40th Anniversary of Star
Trek. Initially, it looked like Paramount and CBS were interested in
releasing only themed “fan collections” DVD sets of select episodes
during this year, but we are also getting Star Trek: The Animated
Series. To the best of my knowledge, TAS had haphazard VHS
tape releases and also saw light of day as a laserdisc box set. However,
unless you were a Trekkie during the mid-1970s, chances are, you’ve
never seen Star Trek in cartoon form. In its 40th year, Star
Trek can finally be seen in its entirety in narrative chronological
order--Enterprise, The Original Series, The Animated
Series, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The
Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star
Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier,
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, The Next Generation,
Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star
Trek: Insurrection, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and
Star Trek: Nemesis. David McCoy |

Blu-ray
Blu-ray Disc 1: “Beyond the Farthest Star”, “Yesteryear”,
“One of Our Planets Is Missing”, “The Lorelei Signal”, “More
Tribbles, More Troubles”, “The Survivor”, and “The
Infinite Vulcan”. I think the audio may be a superior advancement as compared to the video. Colors are bolder and looks impressive and the visuals, overall, looks superior in-motion. But the audio has a DTS-HD Master upgrade in both 5.1 surround and the option for lossy, Dolby, mono. It's not so much that the surround is crisply separated - but their depth in the effects sound (creatures, space battles etc.) The score, which has a TOS-leaning, is by Ray Ellis and Norm Prescott who've composed for a number of similar animated adventure series. It sounds quite pleasing if occasionally repetitive. There are optional DUB and subtitle options signifying the Blu-ray discs are region FREE playable worldwide. Extras duplicate the 2006 DVD boxset with the exact same audio and text commentaries (slightly different pop-up screen - see sample at bottom,), storyboard gallery for “The Infinite Vulcan”, the 245-minute video Drawn to the Final Frontier: The Making of Star Trek: The Animated Series written by Stephen R. Wolcott and has input from producer Lou Scheimer, writer D.C. Fontana, director Hal Sutherland, Mike Sussman, Larry Brody, Judith Reeves-Stevens and others. There is also the 7-minute piece entitled What’s the Star Trek Connection? regarding 4 specific episode references plus and introduction. Lastly are the 'Show History' text screens. The package contains 22 very nice color 'cards' (see picture) one for each episode. This is really for the fns who couldn't get enough of The Original Series (TOS) and it has the cache of being voiced by almost all of the original cast; William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan and Majel Barrett - even Mark Lenard as Sarek! Like TOS there are some great episodes and some mediocre ones. It's pretty fun although the animation is not up to modern standards. Still, I admit to re-indulging in the higher resolution and lossless audio. A keeper! Gary Tooze. ***
ON THE DVD: Video:
The 1.33:1 picture image is rather breathtaking. Given the
quasi-orphan status of The Animated Series and using the
video quality of The Original Series as a point of
reference, I was expecting the cartoon to look beat up and aged.
Instead, it looks like the show was given a careful restoration.
This is an exceptionally clean and sharp video transfer. A few
specks of dust are noticeable, but the only real indication of
the passage of time (more than thirty years) is the animation
style itself.
