What is a Compliant Mechanism?
Traditional mechanisms gain mobility with the help of movable joints. Compliant mechanisms, however, achieve the same result from the deflection of flexible members. Like rigid-link mechanisms, they are also devised to transfer or transform motion, force, or energy, but they do not rely on movable joints, hinges, or pins to do so. The difference is in the design, in which flexible members do the same job. A Compliant System need not be flexible at all links, but some important ones must be flexible.
In a compliant mechanism, transmission and/or transformation of motion and force is achieved through elastic deformation of the members of the mechanism. In terms of economy of material, performance, resistance to wear and tear, manufacturability, adaptability to smart actuations and embedded sensors, scalability to micro and nano sizes, etc., compliant mechanisms provide a big advantage over rigid-body mechanisms
