Strategies For Combating Insomnia
by Dr Greg Frost

Everyone knows that sleep is important. It is while we are asleep that our minds and our bodies begin to grow and change; however, for many a good night’s sleep is simply not an option. For those suffering from a condition known as insomnia, which means the inability to sleep, going to bed at night can be a constant battle. Without proper amounts of sleep their minds are not able to properly function, making it very difficult to do what needs to be done (to say nothing of simply doing what it is that they want to do) throughout the course of the day.

Fortunately, scientists and market researchers have done some investigating into the matter and have formulated a number of strategies to help insomniacs fight against their disease and walk away feeling better than they ever have.

    • Exercise throughout the day. If the body and mind are not tired at night they will not wish to go to sleep. It is as simply as that. By exercising for at least thirty minutes a day insomniacs can greatly increase their chances of finally getting a good night’s sleep.

    • Don’t eat right before bed. While it may seem as though you should want to go to bed with a full stomach the truth of the matter is that you will probably find yourself feeling uncomfortably like a stuffed turkey if you attempt to fall asleep while your food is still in the early digestive process. Attempt to eat at least three hours before you go to bed, and keep any snacks after that time to a minimum.

    • Sleep in warm pajamas and turn the bedroom heat down. A hot room will make it very difficult to stay asleep, while a cool room will encourage you to seek the comfort of your warm bed. The combination of cool air on your face and warm air on your body will serve to help you drop straight to sleep.

    • Eliminate all but the barest quantities of liquid for at least an hour before bedtime. It is impossible to get a good night’s sleep if you find yourself spending half of it running back and forth to the restroom.

    • Keep a journal near your bed and write in it nightly. What often keeps insomniacs up through the night is the ability of their minds to continue chewing over a problem long after the day has come to a close. By venting these problems to a journal your mind will have the ability to bring these issues to resolution (or at least to stop holding them inside) and you will be able to drift off to sleep.

By following these steps you too can beat insomnia. A good night’s sleep is something that no one should have to live without.
