Bookish Blog Hop Party & News

Hey everyone! I have a bit of news to share before jumping into the Bookish Blog Hop Party. ^.^

I was given the honor of being part of Tink's Place. Dottie, the owner and my friend, has handed me the reins for the famous Flash Fiction meme! For those of you that have never heard of this meme, then you have missed out! It's a lot of fun. Every Monday a picture is presented and by Friday you post a short story with the minimum of 350 words to go along with the picture It's a lot of fun. It defiantly gets the creative juices flowing.

Here's my cute little signature that I'll be using:

Yes, that is Fawn one of Tinkerbell's fairy friends. ^.^ Since I love Tinkerbell and themes, Dottie and I decided to keep the theme and I have my own little fairy avatar too. If you want to check out my first post click HERE and click THIS and be transported to Dottie introducing me to her followers.

Movie Review: Magic Mike

Length: 1 hour & 50 minutes
Released: June 29, 2012
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Biography sort of, and Romance
Rating: R (pervasive sexual content, brief graphic nudity, language, and drug use)

Directed By: Steven Soderbergh
Where I Got It: Seen it in theaters twice

SUMMARY: Set in the world of male strippers, Magic Mike is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Channing Tatum in a story inspired by his real life. The film follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money

TRAILER:

CAST:

Magic Mike - Channing Tatum (The Vow)
Adam, The Kid - Alex Pettyfer (I am Number Four, Beastly)
Dallas - Matthew McConaughey (Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days)
Ken - Matt Bomer (White Collar)
Joanna - Olivia Munn (Robot Chicken)
Brooke - Cody Horn (Twelve, White Collar)

Okay, confession time....I did not go to see this movie for the story-line. That is why I have neglected to write a review for this, because I didn't feel right writing a review. However, I seen this movie twice, so seeing the lovely abs didn't have me drooling as much. Oh I drooled, but I could focus on what was going on that was plot-related. Hahaha.

Anyways, the cast of men were wonderful, except for "Tarzan"...he grossed me out and his part in the movie was so limited that I don't see why they bothered having him in the movie. Sorry....but the casting was great and the acting was great. However, Brooke/Cody Horn bored me too death with her monotone voice. *eye twitches* The dancing is acting, but I must make special note of this....it was AWESOME! They cut out a lot of the dance numbers, which upset me immensely. However, I shall rent the un-directors' cut to see those extra dance scenes. ^.^

There was a plot. *gasps*

I know I know! How insane is that? It was rather silent but it was there. Many think it was "weak", but I think that most people couldn't focus on the plot. I will admit that it was....not played out well enough. The editing was horrible to say the least. Scenes seemed out of place and just sloppily thrown together. On the brightside though, I loved the theme and the meaning behind the movie. It was subtle but it was there. It took a long time to establish what that meaning was and what the viewer should gain from the film.

In the end, this was a movie that 99.9999999% of the viewers went to see the hot men dance around and be strippers. However, if you could focus then you would notice the plot and the theme. Even though the theme wasn't presented how I would present it, I do appreciate it. I'm glad they attempted to make this drool-fest a legit movie and not....well....ya know. Out of five stars I grant it 3 stars. It is more like 2.5, but I don't give decimals so I rounded.

Favorite Character(s): Mike (^.^), Tito (just because he was hottest out of them all and I love the actor), and Ken (even though he was....well...a druggie)

Not-so Favorite Character(s): Brooke (0_0) and Tarzan (why was he even there? What was his role?)

Born To Be a History Buff?

After reading an interview over at B's blog today, a question formed................................was I born to be a history buff? Right away my answer is: yes. Yes, I was. Here's a list of some of life experiences I have that seem to have pushed me to be the History Geek I am:

  • Parents having a small interest in history
  • My mother being addicted to the old vintage movies and making me watch them
  • My Step-daddy being addicted to war, gangster, and some black and white movies
  • Having some great history/social studies teachers throughout my lifetime
  • My elders forcing me to read Dear America/Royal Diaries/My America books. My mother even had me subscribed me for a while.
  • My Grandpa Carol's house was full of antiques
  • My Grandpa Carol would tell me so many old stories from his life and even of his parent's.

I feel like this is proof enough, but me being a curious beaver I had to look online for possible answers. Could genetics be a huge factor in our interests?

Many, many family members of mine LOVE history! My mother, my Aunt, my Grandma Hall, and many others. I really couldn't find anything about this theory of mine. I did find one article that makes a microscopic note of this over HERE

My theory seems it could have some merit due to personal experience. I was raised by my mother and my step-daddy and I had little connect (until recently) with my biological dad's family. However, after meeting them a great majority of them have huge interests in history too! For example, my Aunt J (nickname) even worked at a Renaissance Festival in California and she graduated with a degree in history. Her mother, my grandma, has a pretty decent taste in history.

Conclusion
Life experiences and perhaps genetics plays a role in the interests we hold. I feel this theory of mine can be related to ANY interest we have; be it history, reading, sports, music, fashion, animals, and etc. Perhaps I'll do my own study when I have an over amount of free-time. ^.^

What do you think? Do you feel you were born to be _________?

Book Review: The Iron Duke

Author: Meljean Brook
Title: The Iron Duke (Iron Seas #1)
Genre: Steampunk, Sci-Fi, Paranormal Romance, Adventure, Fantasy
Pages: 378
First Published: October 5th, 2010
Where I Got It: Borrowed from Library

"First in an all-new series where seductive danger and steampunk adventure abound in the gritty world of the Iron Seas.

After the Iron Duke freed England from Horde control, he instantly became a national hero. Now Rhys Trahaearn has built a merchant empire on the power-and fear-of his name. And when a dead body is dropped from an airship onto his doorstep, bringing Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth into his dangerous world, he intends to make her his next possession.

But when Mina uncovers the victim's identity, she stumbles upon a conspiracy that threatens the lives of everyone in England. To save them, Mina and Rhys must race across zombie-infested wastelands and treacherous oceans-and Mina discovers the danger is not only to her countrymen, as she finds herself tempted to give up everything to the Iron Duke."

This is my first novel by Meljean Brook and my first full novel in the steampunk genre. I've read the occasional short story, but this is my first technically.

I asked B over at Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell, what would be a good book to read as an introduction (of sorts) to this genre, she steered me towards this deliciously covered book. Thanks B!

Well, being new to the genre its going to be really hard for me to review this, so I'll divide and conquer this book review:

The Good

-Great set of characters! Meljean Brook certainly has a great mind of having her characters interact to each other and the situations in the book. They felt very 3D and real. I especially loved Mina, she was pretty bad ass. Rhys was a little annoying at points, but I still liked him.

-The world was pretty cool. Just imagine if our world was like that?

-Meljean Brook did a wonderful job with imagery. I really could see every zombie, the interesting half-human half-machine, I could hear every spout of steam from the machines, and etc. She did a wonderful bringing this world to life.

-The zombies and the kraken were neat! When I read that she was going to have zombies in this book, I was a little unsure how she would do it. Too be honest I felt like it be forced and sort of cheesy, but she did very well in avoiding that trench of cheesieness.

-Loved the ending! This was my face below. I can't say more than how shocked I was, because I might spoil something!

The Bad and the Ugly
Okay....ummmm.....let's see.....
-The romance seemed very forced at points. I really didn't FEEL that they wanted each other, except for Rhys, but I doubted his emotions for her very much. He's a super rogue-ish pirate who use to rape and pillage for the fun of it. Such characters rarely do a 180 and can dedicate himself to one "broad".

-I wish Meljean Brook went more into detail on the Hordes. They are interesting and I really want to know how they gained such technology. Perhaps more information will be given in future books.

-I didn't understand the hatred of the other "infected" people had on Mina. Aren't the majority of them part Horde due to the Frenzys? Or wouldn't they be more understanding? Seeing a half-horde shouldn't be too surprising or ghastly.

-Even though there was a lot of adventure going on, I felt....bored sometimes. It's odd, but it's just what I felt.

-Don't get me wrong, I love romances, but I felt the romance trumped over the adventure sometimes. I was more interested in the adventure aspects sometimes. Perhaps that's why I felt bored at points. Hahaha, I think I found my reason now. The romance aspect seemed to appear at wrong spots....in my opinion of course.

Conclusion
I liked this book. It's a great introduction to the world of steampunk for others that want to check out this new-ish genre. When I shut the book and read the last word, I took some time to think deeply about my feelings of this genre as a whole....should I read more? Did I really like? Did I hate it? Well...to some up my  reaction to this genre and this book, just look down:

Okay, okay....the steampunk genre seems legit and I'll check out some more in the future. I would recommend this book to those that love the genre and for those that want to take this genre for a test-drive, like moi. In the end I give this 3 stars. It would be like a 3.4, but I don't give decimals, so I rounded. I really want to read Yasmin's book!

Favorite Character(s): Mina (epic heroine),Yasmin (cold-hearted, but a strong and complex character), Rhys (sometimes), Newberry (^.^ he reminds me of O'Bryon from the show Copper), and Anne.
Not-so-favorite Character(s): Mina's madre/mother (>.> *spoiler* I don't care that you were raped, there was no reason to gouge out your own eyes because your baby looks Asian/Horde-an. That's horrible and not excusable. *spoiler ended*) and Dorchester (meh).

-Pride and Prejudice (tied for third)
-Northanger Abbey (tied for third)
-Emma
-Sense and Sensibility

Favorite Heroines from Best to Least:
-Elizabeth Bennet
-Fanny Price
-Anne Elliot
-Catherine Morland (tied)
-Elinor Dashwood (tied)
-Emma Woodhouse
-Marianne Dashwood

Favorite Men from Best to Least:
-Captain Wentworth (*drools*)
-Mr. Darcy (^.^)
-Colonel Brandon
-Edward Ferrars
-Henry Tilney
-Mr. Knightly
-Edmund Bertram

Jane Austen is one of the best authors ever. After reading her novels, the evidence is clear as day as to why she is so highly remembered. Her novels has lasted so long and they'll still be remembered for hundreds of years to come. Hopefully my future kids will love her like I do.

Next on my list? I'm going to watch a version of 'Emma' and 'Northanger Abbey'. Now I'm going to re-watch 'Jane Austen Book Club', which I watched a while back, but missed some of the inside jokes because I had only read a couple of the novels. Exciting!

An Extremely Late Friday Flash Fiction

Every Monday Dottie over at Tink's Place posts a picture and on Friday we share a story to go along with the picture. The story has to be about 350 or so words.

So sorry this is extremely late. I forgot to post this yesterday. I literally worked 12 hours and when I got home at 8:30 pm, I watched 'Once Upon a Time' and the finally of 'Copper'. After that I crashed. Hahaha. I zonked out and I woke up feeling great until I realized I have a load of homework to do. >.> Oh well. Here's my long-awaited story for this week.

The Long Wait (A Lord of the Rings variation)
by: Carole Rae

"The time of the Elves is over...."

With a sigh she let the flower fall from her hands. It drifted slowly in the light, perfect breeze. Slowly it fell down beyond her sight. This new world was every thing the legends had said it would be. It was utter paradise. Perfect in every way. Like the elves, the flowers never died unless plucked from the branch. Never did the land have to suffer war or horrible storms. This land did not have to suffer the Dark Lord like Middle Earth; his evil powers could never reach this land no matter how he wished it. However, once one came here, they could never return to Middle Earth. The magic here protected itself this way.

Her gaze shifted to the floating city across the way. That city held the high born Elves. Once Lord Elrond and Lady Galadriel came they would live there. They would end up like the rest of the higher Elves...they would rarely be seen anymore. Her own father lived there, but she refused to live in seclusion there for decades at a time. She had to wait for him. He promised he would follow her to Aman once the Dark Lord was ended forever. With each passing day, her heart sank. What if he died in the wars? What if he found another lover and decided to stay? She shook her head to stop the poisonous thoughts. If she allowed such thoughts to flow through her mind, she would lose her sanity.

“He will probably never come, Lady Anetha.” A velvety voice whispered behind her. She slowly turned and glared at the man who dared tempt her with such negative thoughts. He was tall with long blonde hair. He was one of Lady Galadriel's top generals who came over to Aman years ago.

“He shall. Unlike you he has a loyalty to make sure Middle Earth is save before he leaves it forever.”

He chuckled, “I am sorry to offend you my Lady,” He bowed and looked up at her with shining cobalt eyes, “But if I were to have your heart, I would abandon everything to be with you. Leave Middle Earth to its fate for instance.”

Anetha shook her head, “Leave me alone. You think you are funny teasing me so.” She quickly turned back around and hoped he would leave.

Lightly he touched her long, ebony hair and whispered, “I do not mean to offend or tease you Lady Anetha...but I hate to see you wait an eternity for a man that may never find his way to Aman. There are few boats left, so his chances are slipping away like the waves on the sand.” Before Anetha could say anything he was gone as silently as he came.

“He will come. I know just know it.”

~*~

Hours passed and the sun was beginning to fade away. Anetha sadly watched the sky. The different hues of blue, pink, and gold helped aid how beautiful Aman was. However, Anetha could only morn over how she was stuck her forever and possibly never see Fingon again. What if Luinwe was right? What if Fingon misses the last ship to leave Middle Earth?

The day was drawing to a close and the last ship of the day had reached shore hours ago and all the passengers had long ago left shore and made their ways to their final destinations; their last home until the end of the world.

Anetha took a deep breathe and began to walk away. After a couple steps though, she halted and stared at a dark, male figure leaning against the wall. A hood was pulled over his face. The blood in her veins froze, “Fingon?”

The man pushed his way from the wall, “My lady.” He bowed and pulled the hood away from his beautiful face. He slowly returned to his full height and timidly smiled at her.

Anetha squealed and jumped into his embrace. She kissed him for all she was worth. She kissed him with all the love and hurt she had felt these many moons without him in her sight. At first he was rather surprised at her attack, but slowly he put his arms around her waist and soaked in her kiss. Tears from both of them fell down their cheeks as they stood there sharing their love and pain.

Even though the time of the Elves on Middle Earth was coming to end, the Elves' stories would never cease. They will continue to love and live until the end of time.

I live with my husband Dave and dog Sammy. My two children are grown and I have two grandchildren. I love to watch people and that has helped me with my writing. I often use people I watch as characters in my books and I always try to give my characters some of my own values and habits.

I love to create characters and put them in a troubling situation then sit back and let them do all the work. My characters surprise even me at times. At some point in the book they take on a life of their own and the twists and turns they create becomes the story. Of all the stories I could write I found I like mystery/thrillers the best. I like to keep my readers guessing until the very end of the book.
My book titles are: Bones, The Darkness Within, Meghan’s Legacy, Shadow Chaser, Witness, Secrets and Lies, Legacy of Murder, The Unknown Son, The Prophet, No One to Hear You Scream, Bradbury Inn, Murderous Intent, Wrong Number, Fall from Grace, The House on Berkley Street.

Book Review: Northanger Abbey

Author: Jane Austen
Title: Northanger Abbey
Genre: Historical Romance, Classic, Gothic, humor
Pages: 205
First Published: December 1817
Where I Got It: My shelf (bought at Goodwill)

"Northanger Abbey follows seventeen-year-old Gothic novel aficionado Catherine Morland and family friends Mr. and Mrs. Allen as they visit Bath. It is Catherine's first visit there. She meets new friends, such as Isabella Thorpe, and goes to balls. Catherine finds herself pursued by Isabella's brother, the rough-mannered, slovenly John Thorpe, and by her real love interest, Henry Tilney. She also becomes friends with Eleanor Tilney, Henry's younger sister. Henry captivates her with his view on novels and his knowledge of history and the world. General Tilney (Henry and Eleanor's father) invites Catherine to visit their estate, Northanger Abbey, which, from her reading of Ann Radcliffe's Gothic novel The Mysteries of Udolpho, she expects to be dark, ancient and full of Gothic horrors and fantastical mystery."

Finally finished this book. It took me a while, but I always take my time with classics and especially Jane Austen books. For the older stuff it's better that way...at least for me. It's been a couple days since I finished this, so I don't recall half of what I wanted to say and comment on. Mmmm, oh well I guess.

I liked this, but I feel like I was missing how this was suppose to be funny. Yes, there was a couple funny bits, but I feel like I missed it. How was it funny?! I felt it was really sad and upsetting at points. I mean Henry teased the naive Catherine and points and Isabella was an idiot to the point it was funny. Catherine is odd, Mrs Allen is so out of it that its funny. Perhaps that was the humor? The same could be said about Isabella's brother. At first I really liked Isabella, but after a few chapters I wanted to slap some sense into that thick head of hers. Mmmmm.....but yes, I felt like this was more serious then I expected when I heard that this is "humorous".

Even though I missed 90% of the humor, I really liked this! Oddly enough it is now tied to my third favorite of the Austen novels. I can't wait to watch the movie soon! Perhaps the movie can change my opinion of Mr. Tilney, because he bugged me. I can't put my finger on it, but I wasn't a fan of him. I feel like he is more realistic to all the other lovely men in her novels. He is more complex and has more "depth", I suppose you can say. All the characters have that same realistic feel to them. It's really hard to explain until you've read all the other books and then this one.

I loved the concoction that Jane Austen created with this one. There is romance, a little bit of humor, mystery, a small touch of Gothic, and adventure all mixed in one. This novel defiantly shows Jane Austen's genius with the pen. If only she had a chance to write more novels. *sighs* Oh well. I least I still have her short writes to read. ^.^

All-in-all, I really this and I am glad I saved this for last. The characters and the story kept me highly entertained and interested even though it took me an eon to read it. Life....I would recommend this for those that love Jane Austen and other classic novels. You will love this! I was worried I would hate this, but in the end I'm so glad I finally got myself to read this. Out of five stars I grant this 5 stars. It would be 4.5, but I don't give decimals, so I rounded.

Favorite Character(s): Catherine (she was so naive, but I highly loved her), Isabella (at the beginning) James (Catherine's brother was so cute...poor guy), Mr. Tilney (near the end he got better), and Eleanor Tilney (a darling)

Not-so Favorite Character(s): General Tilney (GAH), Isabella (middle and ending she made me hate her), and Mr. Thrope (I wanted to kick him from the moment he set foot on stage).

Thursday Book Teaser: The Iron Duke

A weekly meme created by Carole (me) to share excerpts and book teasers from books. Anyone can join, just make sure not to give away any spoilers.

Happy Thursday everyone! The weekend is nearly here and Halloween is right around the corner! So instead of my usual TBT meme picture, I'll temporarily use a Halloween version of the old one. hehehe. I am really getting into the spirit this year. I even have a great costume I'm wearing. No, not Anne Boleyn (never had a chance to save enough money due to my lack of a job for a while), but Marie Antoinette. I won't be able to wear it to work (*sighs*), but I'm wearing it to a Halloween party in November. Odd, but it works! I'm reusing my dress that I wore long ago at my sweet 16. It'll be big, because I was 30lbs heavier, but oh well. There are ties on it, so it'll fit. ^.^ I also plan on this time around as Marie to be a little morbid perhaps. I'm contemplating using red makeup around the neck of where she lost her head to the guillotine. Perhaps I'll be The Ghost of Marie Antoinette.

Not every original though....mmmmm...maybe I'll be Princess Lambelle or Madame du Barry. ^.^ For the latter I can go nuts! I'll wear a ton of jewelry and be skanky. Lots of ideas! Maybe I'll just be a witch. Nah...I have been a witch twice already..........

Sorry for the rant...here is my book teaser for 'The Iron Duke' by Meljean Brook. I've barely broken the cover, so this teaser is a teaser for me too. In honor of Halloween and all the spooky stuff, I've picked page 66 starting at sentence 6. Of course you can pick your own starting point, but here we go!

Page #: 66
Starting at sentence: 6

"Remembering that, Mina's anger built into resolution. What could Trahaern to do her family that Horde hadn't already done? Nothing. And her family had always fought back, always survived. The only danger he posed was to Mina's person and her career - but no matter the damage he caused, she would survive that, too.

She looked up. The rood of the lift had almost reached the next floor. The duke still hadn't spoken. Her tension began to loosen its grip. Had she mistaken his intentions, then? Perhaps he just hadn't wanted to be crowded.

Metal scraped, and the lift jolted to a halt. Mina stumbled forward before catching her balance - and realized that he'd timed it perfectly. They'd stopped halfway between floors. The lift's roof concealed them from above, and if anyone entered the corridor below, the gate blocked the view of the lift's interior.

Damn him. Damn him."

Oooooooh. Can't wait to see what happens next! What are you guys wearing this Halloween (or at any event in honor of the this lovely holiday)?

Who, Where, What? (1)

A weekly meme created by Melissa over at My World in words and pages

I am rather bored right now, so I shall finally join in on this weekly meme created by my blog homie, Melissa. ^.^ This meme was created for those to share where they are in a book they are reading. Make sure to not give away spoilers! Just share who your with, where you're at, and what is going on in your book.

Right now I'm nearly done with Northanger Abbey by the always fabulous Jane Austen. I'm so close to the end I can smell it! I've been working on this book for a while now. Gah!

I'm with Catherine over at Northanger Abbey in England during the 19th century. Things are starting to get "spooky", Catherine is now convinced Northanger Abbey is supporting supernatural beings and objects.

^.^ Where are you in your adventures?

Music Monday

Happy Monday you guys. I just realized I passed the 50 mark on 'Music Monday' posts *throws confetti*.

First is 'Some Nights' by FUN. Not only is the song great, but the video is awesome. I could see Kevin from the show 'Copper' listening to this. Also, it would be a good theme song for the show too.

Here's another good song. 'Whatcha Sayin' by Jason Derulo. For some reason I could see Henry Crawford form Mansfield Park by Jane Austen listening to this in his depression over being an idiot.

Now for a funny video. This is FWP....this is dedicated for all those people who suffer First World Problems:

Hope you enjoy my video selections!

SUMMARY:

"The Barden Bellas are a collegiate, all-girls a cappella singing group thriving on female pop songs and their perfect looks. After a disastrous failing at last year's finals, they are forced to regroup. Among the new recruits is freshman Beca, an independent, aspiring DJ with no interest in the college life. But after she meets Jesse, from the rival all-male a cappella group, Beca has a new outlook and takes it upon herself to help the Bellas find their new look and sound and get back into the competition."

Finally I'm diving back into movie reviews. I've done some serious adjustments to these reviews. Hope you guys like the new look! It's more organized and easier to accomplish. ^.^

Sarah, her mom, and I have been DYING to see this movie. We seen the trailer while watching 'Magic Mike' (a later review to come perhaps). We really hoped they would rename the film to 'Fat Amy'. Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) was the bee's-knees. She stole the movie, I feel. I wish I could be Fat Amy. Without her the movie would have fell flat in the comedy section. This movie was basically like 'Bring It On', but with singing and Fat Amy.

The plot was alright and the acting was fairly good. Anna Kendrick tried the Bella Swan card; misfit, awkward, boring, every guy wants her, and etc...which I found funny. I loved the cast on both sides of the gender pool. The guys were HILARIOUS and very attractive. The girls....interesting mix of people. All of them opposites to say the least. A lesbian  a sex addict, a very quiet and morbid Asian, the Bella-wannabe, Fat Amy, a stuck-up bitch (don't mind my French), and a red-head.

The boys of Pitch Perfect

My friend Sarah is studying to be a Music major, so I had to ask her a couple questions. If you have a limited knowledge of music terms, then you might be confused like me. Like "nodes"...what is that? I missed that joke entirely because I'm a Social Studies major, not a Music major. Just a side note for you guys. There might be a couple jokes that might slip by. Also a lot of the jokes could be seen as dirty and I would agree. Don't take young kids to see this.

I really liked this movie overall, it was cute and funny. I loved the music! Even though they beat "I Saw the Sign" too death with a medal pole. Mmmmm. That song was stuck in my head for days. *beats head on table* However I'll share the song that has haunted me for days.

In the end, I grant this 4 stars. I would recommend this to those that love musicals, music, or just a funny movie to ward of being bored. I'll admit it....I did not read the book, because I had no idea it was a book until later on. 0_0
