Lantern Festival

Lantern festival as it is well-known to us has already ended for this year at least. During the night, went to the nearby field to observe many people celebrating the festival in their own ways. Lighting up firecrackers, walking around with the lantern and arranging candles in a particular manner. Ever wondered about the origin of this yearly ordeal? Information taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lantern_festival.

The story behind it

The origin of Lantern Festival dates back in the early Han Dynasty during Emperor Wu of Han's reign. Legend has it that Emperor Wu of Han had a dream of his palace being burned downed and felt that the dream was a bad omen, so he asked his subjects in his imperial court for advice the next day. Some of the subjects took the opportunity to perform a good deed for the thousands of concubines and female servants in the imperial palace who were prohibited from going home by telling the emperor that the dream was indeed a bad omen and the palace would be burnt down to the ground by deities. In order to avoid impending disaster, each female resident in the imperial palace must carry a lantern and go home, thus fooling the deities in believing there was already a fire in palace and people were fleeing, and every one would return to the palace afterwards. The emperor agreed and of course, there was no fire at the palace and the emperor credited the supposedly successful aversion of the disastrous fire with what was done, and hence he decreed the event to become a regular festival. As a result, the festival eventually became a family reunion day when it merged with other Chinese traditions of various regions in China over time, such as eating sweet glutinous rice dumpling served in a sugary soup, symbolizing family reunion.

Had the motive of taking some shots that night. However, I met a few familar faces too. All of them who were my former schoolmates. Nice to meet you guys/girls again. Below are some scenes during the celebration! Hope you enjoy them.

Recap

Establishing my memory of last week's Christian Fellowship, entered an hour (an approximation) late as I had some matters to settle in the INTIMA Office. Praise and worship was still going on. The last song for the session though. People, mostly committee members came forth after that to give a word or two about live groups. The gist of the testimonies were how it would benefit those who attend. In a way, they we're promoting the live groups. Well, here I am promoting it too! Do join the live groups after college! It's fun and whacky!

Join t3h live groups!

The highlight of the games I suppose. The first was the classic angel and mortal game where everyone picks a piece of paper with a name written on it, whereby he/she is the mortal. As a guardian angel, an individual is expected to take "good care" of their mortals. They can write a message to their mortals by posting it in their envelopes located at Oasis, which I have not found out where it is. I am such a bad angel ain't I? I'm just too lazy. If you're wondering who's my mortal, let's just say it is a he.

Two lines!

Oh noes! Not HIM!

The next game was the bomb! Everyone was divided into two teams, making two lines. The game was inspired by "Muscial Chairs", so I've heard. Two tables were placed in front of the two lines, with a plate of meehon each and ketchup, soy sauce, salt, chilli and ecetera on them. As the music goes on, the person in front of the lines gets to decide what to add into the plate, and proceeds to the back of the line. However, when the music stops, the last person who added "crap" into the meehon has to consume a bite from the other line's plate of meehon. So yeah, you add "crap" to your plate of meehon to watch the other team suffer.

Wehee, I'm adding crap!

I can still smile!

Below is a series of photos of Joshua ( Guy with a thing for name swapping =O ) consuming the plate of meehon with extreme "crap".

Welcome, Honda

How many of us have invested a large sum of money in a vehicle? Alright, maybe not us but our parents perhaps. Only recently did my parents decided on purchasing a new car. Just a few years after having the "Atos" delivered to our porch. Fast forward the hands of time and the car was finally ready to be collected, after some hiccups. Bidding for the wanted number plate took quite a while. Delays. Could have driven the car off much earlier.

The Honda Emblem

Got home from college today and a few minutes later, the agent was already at the front door with his Honda Jazz. Entered the vehicle with my mom and sister. Off we went! To the Honda showroom near USJ 8. It's located near the car workshops and factories. A few minutes and there we were.

I-VTEC inside

The Interior

Spotted the car and the usual procedures began. The agent explained the functions and parts of the car to us. Done with that, it was time for the paperwork. Took a moment before everything was cleared for the car to go on the road. Drove the car around town. To Sunway, SS 14 and back home. Pumped in some gas too as it was only fed with RM 10 worth of petrol. Guess who got to spoil the car first? Not me of course.

There it is

Take one home today!

The driver

Came home about 6.30 PM. In time for dinner but not for working out. Argh! Yeah, about the car. It definitely looks and feel extra spacious due to the dashboard. Well, the roof is quite low though. Any person who is slightly taller than me would have trouble fitting in. The features in the car are nice, especially the digital speedometer! The steering and braking is extra responsive too. Have to get use to it. To sum it up, it's worth the money buying this car. Okay, maybe not. Not my money! Ha ha!

RAC Gombak's 5th Installation Night

RAC Gombak organised their 5th Installation Night on the 15th of September, at Izzi Resturant along Jalan Sultan Ismail. Who went? Giju, Ivan and I. Left for the Subang Jaya KTM train station with Giju driving. Got there, bought the tickets and waited only a while for the train. We had good timing! Had much space in the train as it's not during the 6 PM rush hour. Took quite a while before reaching KL Central.

A couple

As soon as we got off the KTM train, we made our way to the KL Central Monorail. It was drizzling a little, the floor wet from a heavy downpour apparently. Nevertheless, we got our tickets and had a comfortable ride on the train to Imbi station. Disembarked and towards Lowyat Plaza we went. It was around 5.00 PM or so. Called Calvin for directions to Izzi Restaurant. The directions were confusing at first as we are not familiar with KL. Eventually found the said Mc Donalds and there stood Izzi restaurant opposite it. Should have disembarked at Bukit Bintang's Monorail station. Would have saved me a couple of years of human life. Pollution, pollution.

The view from Izzi

At the front entrance of Izzi we stood. I took out my handphone and called Calvin again. Well, this time it's for an escort. We don't want to be walking into the restaurant as though as we are patronising the restaurant and not attending the event! Yet again, maybe I'm just thinking too much. We arrived way before time and relaxed on the comfortable sofa sets. As for me, I went to the "open-air" smoking area to have some shots of the sights and sounds of KL. Enjoy!

What Audi model is it?

The Monorail

We waited and time passed by little by little. Took some pictures of ourselves too. Well, as a sign of we being present! Drinks were served to us. Coca-cola. We drank them and waited for a bit. We registered and paid RM 50 each when the reception counter was opened. More people came out from the lift as time passed by. A few familiar faces apart from the many new faces were seen. We were the only college-based club that attended the installation that night. Well, I'm not saying that there was a major difference in age gap as they were other young people from community based clubs who attended.

Proof of existence!

Took some pictures as the crowd grew bigger and bigger. Had a tough time getting accustomed to the lightings and other factors. Well, I guess photoshop saves the day! Hmm, looks like I forgot to elaborate on what happened during registration. We received our goodie bags and wrote our phone numbers on a piece of paper. For what reason? Lucky draw lah! Opened the goodie bags and there were vouchers, the booklet and also keychains or soft toys. Each club also received a flag with a rotaract logo on it.

Richie and friends!! Check out the hair!!

As the night aged, Calvin the emcee for the night got everyone's attention, initiating RAC Gombak's 5th Installation Night. The guests of honour were ushered to the take their seats. With that, the National Anthem was sung. Very patriotic indeed. After the formality, three toasts were made. One for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, another for Rotary International and the last one for RAC Gombak ( I think ). Done with the guzzling of Coca-Cola, a roll-call was done. Clubs were called from a list, which they were then required to place the flags given earlier on a styrofoam board to confirm attendance. There were last minute attendees too.

Cheers!

I hereby confirm my club's attendance!

Since the theme for the night was "sports wear", the opening ceremony for the night was similar to the lighting of the torch during the Olympic games. Instead of a real fire, a flickering battery powered menthol was used. Well, you can't take the risk of getting soot onto the ceiling of the restaurant can you? With the torch in place, two loud "bangs" were heard. I didn't know what was coming. I was looking down at my camera at that time. Streamers and confetti flew everywhere.

Light the fire!

With that, it was time to please our stomachs. Food was served with little variety. It's a good point in the sense that food wastage is reduced. Pizzas were served to individual tables too. On the menu was fried rice, spagetthi, chicken wings, vegetables and soup. Forgot to have a taste of the soup. Anyway it's just cream of mushroom I guess.

Serve your stomach before serving others!

With dinner underway, a group of magicians went forward to perform some magic tricks. They performed the levitation trick, dissapearing and reappearing cigarette, not forgetting the old school card tricks too. Quite impressive. The hand movements were extremely smooth and fast. However, due to factors such as the audience's point of view, their tricks were clearly visible. Especially the levitating one. At first I was wondering what the magician was doing by just stepping onto the chair. Seems that he was trying to fool the crowd into believing he was floating! Done with that, the magicians later came to individual tables to perform card tricks. For my table, the magician had a number to appear on his forearm as though someone had scratched it there. The number shown on his hand was wrong however. =). Try harder next time!

The Night progressed on with a short speech by outgoing President Kevitpal Singh and also the installation of the incoming board members for Rotary Year 2007/2008. Around 10 PM, my friends and I left the premises to make our way home. The last train from KL Central back to Subang Jaya was at 11.00 PM or so. No way we're going to miss that train.

Jacqueline Mak, Treasurer

Jamie Tan, Community Service

Kelvin Cheong, Bulletine/Public Relations

Kristine Cheong, Secretary

Audrey Joan, Professional Development

Dinesh Krishnan, current District Rotaract Representative

Amanda Lam, President

Congratulations Amanda Lam!

The Monorail from Bukit Bintang station was packed. Had to squeeze like a pack of sardines. Not taking the chance of waiting for another train or we might be stranded in KL. Was a relieve as we finally reached KL Central. Disembarked and was at the platform at 10.30 PM. Guess what? The last train will only reach at 11.00 PM! Sat at the platform for half an hour and it finally came. It was empty with plenty of seats vacant. Next stop, home!
