The next trip is to Italy. My ex-colleague said "Why you want to go Italy? You don't shop what...".

Yeah, i won't waste my time shopping. i'd rather roam around and take photos with my camera hung around my neck just like a typical tourist and spend a beautiful morning at a cafe with a good cup of espresso.

Mmmm...
i'm not sure how it works for every one else, but i need activities that make me feel alive to just keep going on. It can be something simple like pushing my physical limits, or triggering my survival instincts when i travel alone.

Otherwise, i'm better off dead.

i need a holiday!!!!!!!!!

The month of December is passing by too fast. Christmas has just passed. Too many events happening. Moved back to my "new" place just 2 nights before going to Malaysia.

i was in Malaysia for a full week. Came back to a pile of loose ends to tie up at work. Then i fell sick on the Eve. Really bad sore throat, lots of phlegm, some coughing and a heavy head. And that was the night our usual bunch had our Christmas Eve gathering.

Keeping them entertained with the DIY Gingerbread house from Ikea while waiting for the last person to arrive.

It's a potluck with the best foods i have eaten. There was a homemade turkey with stuffing and brown sauce (my friend had her colleague's mum to cook it). It was the best turkey i have ever eaten in my 26 years of existence. The meat was so juicy and so tasty. Shame on all the hotels and restaurants who serve turkey...

The turkey, de-boned. It's my first time eating turkey wing.

The turkey stuffing.

Someone bought a gorgeously delicious black-forest logcake from Bakerzin. i am not a fan of chocolate, but when i say it's nice, it's really nice. Yum... Everyone loved the box that came with the cake too. It's got magnetic bits so it folds up as a nice box or lays flat for you to cut the cake. Plus there's a nice cream-coloured bag with snow-flake prints that came with the cake too.

And we had some salad, pizzas and nice red wine & ice wine... and of course it wouldn't have been enjoyable without the bunch of gals. We even did an impromptu invite of 2 others staying nearby. It was fun!

My humble salad topped with the delicious turkey.

Canadian pizza! Fortunately i only ordered 2 small ones... (because i was still eating them for lunch today.)

A couple announced their wedding on next Christmas, another announced the moving on to greener pastures. All was good.

On Christmas day, we had a family lunch buffet at Hotel Parkroyal @ Beach Road. At night, i attended Chewy & Jixian's wedding dinner at Safra Mt Faber. Simple wedding and it was also a gathering of my secondary school friends. Wish the couple all the best for the long journey ahead!

But on Christmas morning, i received an sms from an ex-colleague that another ex-colleague's dad passed away on the eve. :(:(:( Going for the wake tomorrow. Sad...

The coming week is gonna be manic. Gonna go out after work every night except for New Year's Eve. Somehow i hope to just stay home and rest on that day.

Did i mention, i bought a lovely acrylic table and a nice floor chair from Muji for my room last week? i'm loving it more and more...

Today is the breakthrough of the unpacking of my room. Everything is in order now and there is no more eye-sore clutter everywhere. Perfect.

Outstationed and depressed

Been away from home for almost a week. Supposed to be R&R now, but I don't feel like I'm resting enough and relaxing enough. The first few days of work has really worn me out. It always seems more tiring working overseas.

Recently, I've been feeling quite shit. The Christmas songs and decoration are adding to my already melancholic and depressed mood. I really wish I'm dead. Even 30 looks so far away. If I wish harder, will my wish come true?

For the past week, my body is all hay-wired - somehow. Last week, i would be curled in bed by 10+. i overslept at least twice on my bus trips to work, and of course i would be late by around 30 minutes taking another bus that tours the neighbouring estates of my office before getting me to where i needed to be at.

i went on a birthday party and after only 3 beers, i got knocked out till noon the next day.

On a few occasions, i find myself not very sleepy at night (e.g. now).

And before i know it, the year is almost gone.

Damn it...

i've been feeling so stoned and empty recently. Just tired. Not motivated. Wondering when my days will be up.

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

This evening was supposed to be a fun-filled and packed evening. i was suppose to go for this BMW event at Marina Bay Sands but decided to back out at the last minute because most of the others had something on or just backed out. And i thought i would just join my ex-colleagues for some clubbing and drinks at Arena, but when i was halfway to Clarke Quay, i suddenly felt extremely uncomfortable in my clothes and everything, and i had a sudden yoghurt craving, plus i haven't been feeling very well these few days, so i told them that i would be going back to rest.

Fortunately i didn't get to wait too long for my buses back, because i was feeling really shitty by then.

The best thing that happened to me today was reaching home and changing into home clothes right away.

i figured why McDonald's is something in about everyone's lives. (The points below i'm gonna list are observations from only the Singapore stores. i'm not sure if the rest of the world is like that too.)

  1. The McCounter staff are always very prompt in whisking out your orders - even your special big mac without veggies, plus extra cheese and ketchup. They may not be the people providing the best service on earth, but the food sure comes out fast.
  2. McCashiers have no hesitation in giving you change for a big note even if you are just buying an apple pie. Hell no, they don't even ask you if you have 10 cents for the $2.10 item you ordered.
  3. The McStaff do not shoo table-hogging students away from the restaurants - not even if you stayed there 2 days in a row with just a refillable styrofoam tea cup. They don't even turn away stinky, muddy mountain-bikers.
  4. McDonald's never says "No stock" or "Out of stock" for any item on their menu. You can instantly satisfy that sudden double cheeseburger or nugget craving. Maybe no stock for the Birdy toy that comes with your Happy Meal, but you get to choose a replacement...
  5. Marketing starts from young - and Mac is serious about that. The advertisement about the baby swinging in the swing? Every upswing gives the kid a view of Mac and of course the kid shows a big smile on the face; any other view leads to immediate baby displeasure. And balloons? Which kid doesn't love those colourful things? McStaff give out bunches of balloons a day (with an agenda of course) and all the kids just flock to them like sheep to hay.
  6. How about your friends' McBirthday Parties you attended as a kid? Those were lots of fun (i think) and parents were spared the headache and the mess at home. Every kid at the party leaves with a nice little gift and a big smile on the face.
This is not a propaganda of how good Mac is. i'm not the Number One fan of Mac, but i've always been fascinated by it's marketing strategies. It's just something that striked my mind today. It's so interesting, i wouldn't mind doing a case study on it. :)

Boring halloween

Was supposed to go hiking this morning and last night I was all excited about it; packed my bag with lots of water and some snack and hit the sack early.

And it POURED this morning. Cats, dogs, monkeys, elephants, everyone. So much for being so excited.

It didn't help that I decided to sleep through the rest of the Saturday instead of riding or swimming or doing something else.

Now I'm having a throbbing headache from... not having my daily dose of tea?

Just came back from a wake - yes, it's for my friend's dad, the one whom i visited the previous week. He passed away yesterday morning. He will not feel any pain or suffering anymore. Rest in peace, uncle.

In the very small class of 6 students today...

Teacher: Who in here plays Star Craft 2?
Students: (Total silence)...
Teacher: No one here plays Star Craft??! Have you all heard of Star Craft? So what games do you play?

B (to me): *whispered* Pacman.
Me: (stifling my laughter)...
Teacher: Ah?
Me: Pacman!!!

Of tastes and sounds

I couldn't stand using horrible-sounding earphones that break down under less than 2 weeks of usage. Neither could I wait another 2 months to move back to my place and dig out for my other earphones. I had to get some German technology into my ears before I go nuts without music.

And so, new earphones! This is pretty much my first set of very good earphones and the bass and all the sounds are really nice and crisp, and give me some nice tingles down my spine just hearing quality stuffs. I'm glad I asked the friendly salesperson for advice.

Other than quality sounds, very good food also gives me those tingles. *shivers in delight*

I think hearing and taste are the most under-rated senses.

There's this plump orange cat always hanging around downstairs. He either sleeps on his back on the mesh bench or sprawls in the middle of the lift lobby camouflaged against the light brown tiles. Friendly and loves a good tummy rub. And over the past few weeks, i realise that whenever i walk to him and wave my hand, he says meow. No wave, no meow. :D
i think i finally figured where the creaking from my bike keeps coming from... damned seatpost clamp!

Just finished watching a Korean drama series. It's really... drama. And i noticed that all the actresses had double eyelids and teeth that were too square and straight. That, is probably the biggest highlight of Korean celebrities.

Every day in office, i would be streaming smooth vocal jazz on my computer. And so the other day, a colleague introduced me to songs by David Sylvian. Very distinctive genre. An overdose of his type of song will make you walk off a building. As i am listening to "Solitude" by Ryuichi Sakamoto, i'm actually quite feeling it already.

The other day, i was trying to describe a customer to this colleague who is better in Mandarin than in English, and i had quite a time thinking of Chinese synonyms for the English word charismatic. i realise charisma is not something you can easily describe. Charisma is not about being handsome; maybe charming but not quite; has an invisible pull-factor; and definitely some x-factor that can bluff you of all your money/clothes/anything and still leave you smiling and nodding like a fool.

That is so unfair...

This evening, i visited a close friend's dad who was in the ICU. He was riding his bicycle to work when a private bus knocked him down, shattering his skull into fragments. His face was swollen from all the medicines and fluids that fed through tubes into his body. Even his eyes were swollen - probably partly from the swelling of his brain. Since the accident yesterday morning, he has not regained consciousness nor responded to the pain tests the doctors put him through.

Fortunately, he seems to be improving slightly from the medication. His BP and pulse have been fairly stable for today. With all the support of his family and relatives, i'm sure he will make a comeback soon.

From what my friend said, her dad's boss wanted him to leave the company and they took away his company vehicle first. He then took the bus and rode his bicycle from the bus stop to office every day. i think this routine went on for only 3 or 4 weeks and now...

Life for my friend and her family is going to change drastically. i cannot imagine the emotional and mental turmoil, the mountain of bills and how everything will be different.

Feeling shit this evening. i think i'm just tired from the constant flow of things to do at work. i was so looking forward to enjoying my Mac delivery lunch but was interrupted at least 3 times in between. Times like that, even after finishing a whole meal, it feels like i haven't eaten anything.

i borrowed 5 books from the library. i only found 4 in my bag upon reaching home. i must have left 1 on the desk in the library. What the...

Random tinks and tonks...
  1. Death escapes no one - not even the fittest, strongest, smartest nor the most careful.
  2. How will i ever find the resources to take care of ageing parents?
  3. i hate taking the train to work. Fortunately i discovered a cheaper and faster route (other than cycling) by bus.
  4. The other day, i found a UOB namecard on my office desk. The original name covered by correction tape and a colleague's name was hand-written on it... Guess who did it? Yeah, my boss did. -.-''' Totally hilarious!
  5. The sky in Singapore is beautiful too. Staying on a high floor really brings the best out.
  6. The public pool is one of the rare places where people of all colours, shapes, ages and sizes come together and show genuine laughter.

Choices

Recently, we have been having meetings with the home designer to finalise the details of the renovation and also select the colour scheme, furniture, tiles, paint colour etc.

Every trip is tiring and sometimes (okay, actually it's mostly) frustrating because there would be heated debates on choices. Usually it's my mother + designer + me versus my father who has rather strange taste for mismatched colours.

I thought these meetings were supposed to be fun and enjoyable, and of course in a lot of anticipation to see the end-product...? Looks like I'm wrong.

New Place

I'm back from Krabi! It's been a great trip with fairly healthy and varied eating, plus a good hour of massage everyday.

Thai massage on Thursday, leg massage on Friday, aromatherapy on Saturday and foot reflexology on Sunday.

Oh boy... Do I love massages...

The weather couldn't have been better. The forecast had some rain but all we got was sunny weather. Great for snorkelling, walking around, slacking, etc.

And it's great to be in the land of super fruits. We ate so much fruits - mangoes, dragonfruits, longans, rambutans, pomegranates, pineapples, watermelons, bananas, guavas... The fruits there are just so fresh and sweet and juicy, unlike the imported ones here.

We discovered that beef in general was not cooked well and was very tough to chew on; seafood was the freshest and most succulent (coz Krabi's by the sea). Avoid poultry at all costs.

But I'm back to reality this evening, when our Tiger plane landed in Changi airport.

And tonight, starting my stay at the temporary place while our flat gets a complete makeover.

Actually I think I'm so used to sleeping in foreign places, I'm already feeling very much at home.

Our sashimi platter at Sugisawa (Robertson Quay). The sea urchin was the freshest i have ever eaten before. i got carried away eating and forgot to take photos of the hotate and negitoro sushi. It was good to eat fresh raw fish once again. But i thought if the chef could perfect the sushi-pressing part and control the amount of wasabi a bit more, it would have been really really nice.

The dobinmushi of mushrooms and fish was very flavourful. Loved it!

The meal was slightly on the expensive side but for the freshness, it was all worth it.

Yum...

i was digging through my eraser collections from my pre-primary school times. i've got no idea how i got so many of them, but i know every time my grand-aunty brought me to the doctor near SGH, i would pester her to buy me one eraser.

i like the little grape, strawberry, pineapple and mushroom!!!

There's even an adjustable spanner!!!

And check out the eraser of the HK flag before 1997 when HK was handed over to China.

Will post more oldies when i get the chance!

Okay! i think i'm just wide awake now from the excessive caffeine in the evening out with a friend. i shall post some okay photos from my Germany trip before i get sleepy/lazy/bored.

There were many halls in the exhibition area. i think there were at least 12 halls in all and the first 3 days were pretty much spent on running from one hall to the other for various meetings. It's the warm-up and orientation period.

Outdoors, between the 2 rows of halls, nice dirt ramps were built for demos. Big stuffs, good weather, smooth riders.

Every evening after the show, we would go out as a group for dinner. The first evening, we went to JP's favourite Italian restaurant at Friedrichshafen. The guys there even know him!!! It was by the waters and the Zeppelin museum and we dined al-fresco. The risotto was really not bad... although i only tasted someone else's. Everyone had beer (of course). i was determined to try all the beers i could on the course of this trip.

Germany (or rather Munich and Friedrichshafen) is a dog-friendly place. There were furry fellas trotting beside their owners in the exhibition halls. They would sit quietly under the table during mealtimes. And owners could park their poochies safely outside the supermarket while they went about their shopping. This fella here was so cute and friendly. Sat there obediently and was slightly excited when i went over to give it a pat on the head.

On another night, we headed to Lindau for dinner. It's a little island (and i don't know what's good there other than shops and food). i like the uneven ground and the quaint buildings and all the flowers blooming brightly out of people's balconies.

i am overwhelmed by 1400+ photos taken over less than a week, so i'm giving the bike photos a miss for now, except for a couple of interesting ones.

Now, the family of 8 can sit comfortably on this tandem - just mount 4 child-racks and voila!

The Zeppelin (a.k.a blimp) never fails to fascinate me. i love to see it coasting along in the sky. It gives me some sort of feeling of freedom. :) And it's so big! i love big things! And check out the blue, blue sky and fluffy little clouds...

Schwalbe had a bicycle tube dispensing machine. They should install those on the trails......

This xc bike has the Dura Ace Di2 electronic shifting mechanism on it! Check out the following pix.

Electronic shifters (from the TT bike barend shifters) mounted onto the bar with a special clamp.

2x10 setup essential for the Di2 system.

Di2 rear d!
(i don't want to think about falling on the drive-side...)

The owner's tag.

At the Magura booth... i know i'm a sucker for such colours.

A supplier had arranged a nice dinner for us. i think the food's Italian mixed something (fusion). i had beer once again but the beer experiences have been less fulfilling than the sausage experiences.

Kitty-kat outside our hotel! Winter country animals are really slightly bigger and more fluffy than the ones living under the tropical heat.

The hotel provided breakfast every morning and my favourite bread is the one on the right with many different types of seeds on it. The texture varies with every chew and it's not too hard.

And the delicious bread had to be accompanied by it's buddies - cream cheese w/ herbs, and honey! i'm not quite a fan of honey but this stuffs really tastes quite pleasant.

Bigger and more jumps as the show went into the final day.

We drove the rental car back to Munich which was around 200km from where the show was. The hotel that night was quite far from the city so we decided to eat at the restaurant nearby. After settling down in a cosy corner, i realised we were in for Greek food. Yayyyy!!! i love eating new foods. i found out we were in somewhere called Erding... and that's the motherland of Erdinger beer! And so of course we had to order that. But the Greeks seem to start their meals with some hard liquor... The 3 guys got the zambuca-tasting shots while i got the Melon Liquer which was mild and sweet.

i think they gave me the Melon one because i looked like a little girl? But anyway i took the melon liquer, helped someone with the zambuca, and also had my Erdinger.

Melon Liquer to start off with.

The star-anise-tasting shot.

And the cold frothy pint!

Octopus side dish (tossed in vinegar, cold).

Greek salad!!! i like the feta cheese...

Grilled beef with zazika (yoghurt) on the side.

Someone else ordered lamb on skewer (i'm not sure if it's a mixed platter). The grilled lamb was one of the most delicious meats i've eaten in my whole life. It came with... zaziki once more. Every dish on the menu seemed to have this strange zaziki thing in it. It was strange only because initially we didn't know what zaziki was.

i stole some salmon from someone else. It was delicious. i love the potatoes. There was so much flavour in those carbos. (Note: The salmon also came with zaziki.)

Zaziki is everyone's best friend!

A beer glass is extremely functional as a tripod during dinners.
:D

On the Sunday that we were to leave for home sweet home, we went to roam around Munich's city centre Marienplatz. All the shops (other than F&B outlets) were closed. Europeans sure enjoy their lives. Asians would definitely open shop, 24-7, 365 days a year, or maybe even 366 days if possible.

i couldn't resist the gelato. When i stopped to buy, the rest who claimed that it was cold and unsuitable for ice-cream chipped in their orders. -.-'' Yum...

Marienplatz.
Non-edited photo straight out of my camera using the vignette function.

Argentinian lunch! That would be our final meal in Germany before leaving for the airport.

The sirloin steak was goooood! i finished the baked potato too, skin and all.

The waiter asked me how old i was when i ordered my beer. He doesn't quite believe i'm 26. And i think he's about my age...

Last few photos of the trip.

Audi-themed foyer outside the Munich Airport. Great marketing, eye-catching cars and displays. Aren't they outright targeting BMW whose home is Munich?

The sun was setting and it got chilly very quickly. The cafe sitting area outside had (very thoughtfully) provided some blankets for customers to snuggle in.

i'm not a fan of sausages but i must admit, once you have eaten German sausages, you believe in Deutsche sausages - no more strange-tasting hotdogs from the markt!!!!

Dinner for me was half a rock melon which costed only 99c and an apple.

Lots of finger-food.

i think the guys must have been missing Asian food quite a bit. First thing during the transit at BKK, they went straight for wanton noodle soup and tom yum soup. JP kept asking us to order wa dan hor (Malaysian hor fun) and roti prata on the plane. -.-'''''''

Mango with glutinous rice and coconut milk!!! Absolutely mind-blowing.

And oh, did i mention that we didn't have any personal TV screens for our flights both ways? To give you an idea, the flight from SIN-BKK was 2 hours and BKK-MUC was 11 hours. i have never seen so many passengers standing around in the plane just sipping water or looking out of the window. Gosh... No more Thai airways for long-haul flights the next time round!!!!!!!
