This one goes out to China

Happy Birthday!!!

Here's to my second country and a truly wonderful place. In the years ahead, please try to practice better human rights, evoke less censorship laws and adopt more efficient environmental policies. For the sake of all of us. Also, be nicer to Taiwan and start selling those US reserves you've got locked up in some underground vault the size of friggin' Indo-Asia. It's not going to last I tell you... And do something about the atrocious poverty gap too. Other than that, I think you're quite fine. :) Happy Birthday, China aru~!

(In other news, my midterms just ended today (Yippee!). But I still have a shitload of papers to write and work to do etc (Booooo) Life's not bad though, as a college sophomore; I shouldn't complain)

The Road to Success

It's not easy: truly an uphill climb fraught with pitfalls, traps, roadblocks and detours. Yet, despite all that, the road to success remains a one-way street with no forks or junctions -- you just have to keep keep walking to get to your destination. And the sweet feeling of arriving at the top makes everything worthwhile again (and I mean EVERYTHING).

So folks, don't give up on the road of success. It's mid-semester (and the start for some) and I know it's getting dry/dreary/dull/dreadful/disgusting/drowning/dying/damnation but keep your focus on the target and keep trudging along. Don't worry, you will get there someday.

trolled by H1N1. BIG TIME.

Ok, so the World Choir Championships in Busan are abruptly cancelled today due to the Gyeongnam government's paranoia with the H1N1. That means the orchestra's gala concerts at the festival are cancelled as well. Which then gives me no real reason to go to Korea.

Craptastic.

So now I'm packing to board the plane going to a place with no fixed accomodation. with no plan. Which suits me fine (because I love free'n'easy and hate being sheep) except there's no time at all to do research of anything. Busan? Jeju? DMZ? Maps? Money? Forget about the best Korean backpacking experience, I'll be happy enough if we can pull this off properly.

Man, now I feel like just staying here and hanging out in my own terms.

Curse the Gyeongnam government. How many times must it be reiterated that the H1N1 flu virus is just another common flu that doesn't kill? People who allegedly died from the it actually suffered complications from other health problems that are inherent in their body before they contracted the flu. That it's labelled as a pandemic in the first place is sheer absurdity on the part of WHO, not helped of course by the over-extensive coverage and the subsequent big woohaa caused by the Western media. Seriously, its just puny influenza.

It's two in the morning and I HAVE to go pack. Not looking forward to this trip at all, but will try to make the best of it.

There will most likely be radio silence from me for the next eleven days, since I'm not sure where there'll be a stable internet connection. That also means I will not be blogging SYTYCD this season, since I haven't actually watched any episode so far because of my craptastically busy schedule. LoudTwitter is down, so there're be no twitter blog entries as well. And anything can happen in Korea. Lead good lives, people. Till we meet again.

Update! Where I finally babble in more than 140 characters!

Who knew that Twitter, of all social networks, would be such an ideal vehicle to express myself? The 14o characters limit saves me lots of time and prevents me from writing walls of text (that no one will EVER read). It also effectively bridges the gap between Facebook status updates and lengthy blog posts that need structure and cannot possibly accommodate the presence of multiple random topics in one post. Revolutionary indeed. So... HURRAY!

Plus, there's at least an active community of people who provide adequate feedback and interaction. Unlike this cold and lonely cell where no one ever visits. *sniff* Like, while my blog statistics is bursting with visits related to searches for "Quest Crew", "ABDC" and "hot naked Victor Kim" from all over the world, there exists only one or two odd visitors from IP addresses that actually belong to Singapore. I know it's kinda my fault but can you say "sheesh"?

Having said that, the supposed central topic of this blog, ie my life, needs no updating because essentially it's made up of the events that need little to no elaboration. I shot myself in the foot, spent about a month rotting in front of my laptop, marathoned through all 5 seasons of House (Huddy ftw!) and 10 seasons of Friends (Chandler ftw!), suffocated to death by censorship in China, spent a day as a sheep in Disneyland, wept real tears of sorrow for MJ, went over to the dark side, fell into a trap set by MCYS, successfully got my hair to look like Goldilocks, attempted to write a proper paper etc etc. See, no elaboration needed at all.

It's no surprise, therefore, that reading and hearing about internships and people working for an actual income has left me feeling slightly melancholic because of how unproductive my summer has been in comparison. Even though I know that's kind of inevitable because of my weird vacation schedule. Over the next 2 weeks, I'll be traveling to Korea, the land of the big-faces, to perform in the World Choir Championships with the orchestra. Good times. So right now, I'm basically sweating over a Mozart Violin Concerto on a daily basis. No joke. Dark side is DARK. ... And festering with cocoons of EEEEEEVIL.

The future of this blog remains uncertain though, unlike my schedule of DOOM. I have the biggest backlog of drafts in the world, waiting to be penned while my ink of intellectuality (wtf?) runs dejectedly dry (omg this is the pits). Travelogues of trips made aeons ago, concert reports dating back to last year's Da Capo, rants on every subject known to mankind, etc etc ETC. The list goes on and on, and frankly, I'm pretty ambivalent about giving a damn.

What's for certain, though, is that I'm MOST PROBABLY going to blog about the recent season of SYTYCD, since I've repeatedly promised myself to do so, and some other bits and pieces of my life. So do expect something new appearing in this space over the next few weeks and as Mayor Schwarzenegger always says,

"I'll be back."

As a reward to those kind readers who have made it allllll the way here, I give you an opportunity to droll over this.

If you're a member of the female species of course, with the mainstream sexual orientation. If you don't belong in either group, then, er, ... find your own sexy lady to drool over! Trust me, they're all over the internet.

Disney's Comeback.

Just came back from retail therapy. And a full-fledged lesson in consumerism. *Gag* That's it, I've had enough. No more shopping until perhaps an eternity later -- it makes my feet ache, I'm sick of looking at bras and WHY SO MANY SLOW WALKING PEOPLE?!?!

In other news, Disney's new (or should I say OLD) venture into 2-D animation has made some visible progress. Cue feature length trailer freshly uploaded!

Trailer notes:
  • Omg. I just teared up at the first 30 or so seconds! That was epic.
  • !! It's Prince Eric's brother! :D I swoon at the dashing-ness. Oooh, and with the personality of Philip (sleeping beauty gais) too.
  • I think I prefer princes who are more emo. Although this one is shaping up to be a fine one.
  • HAHAHAHAHA nice twist! (I think it's because mayhaps she isn't a real princess?)
  • GORGEOUS ANIMATION.
  • And a beeaauuuutiful New Orleans. :)
  • "Most magical kiss the world has ever known." ?!? Oh come on, I know this is 2-D but update the trailer script a little will you?
  • Oh boy, I foresee em' arguments about race again. Can we PLEASE leave those out of the realm of art? (it's already happening on Youtube. Do'h)
  • "Come. We pucker." *RIBBIT* ROFLCOPTER!!! Ahahahahaha!
(Chira, brilliant and besotted artist has kindly highlighted the various points of attraction of the new prince for us. Very nice, I say)

And here's the official teaser, featuring amazing concept art of New Orleans. I like this one better. :) It's beautiful.

It was due to sheer academic curiosity and research about the Disney Renaissance that I motivated myself to rewatch old classics like Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, The Little Mermaid etc. Needless to say, I was tipped without warning whatsoever into this world of irrational magic, over-the-top characters, impossible plot lines, wtf bursting out in song in the middle of nowhere, ridiculously idealistic happy endings, unfinished stories, heroines modeled after models, unrealistic Prince Charmings and totally quixotic romances.

And I loved it all. Very very much. Haven't looked back since and now I'm going to look forward to The Princess and the Frog, official flag bearer for 2-D animation (ie DISNEY) comeback. And hopefully proof that "3-D animation hasn't and will never replace 2-D classical animation. It's the narrative that makes the story, not the medium." One of the directors is Ron Clemens, captain of the Aladdin and The Little Mermaid ships, so I guess the existence of hope is rightfully founded.

December December December COME QUICKLY>>>>>!!!

Oh yeah, in the same vein, do check out wonderfully weird Tim Burton and his newest 'Frankenstein': 9. Seriously, it's awesome.

EDIT: And Sherlock Holmes!! XD

Yay. Finished blogging. Excuse my choppy phrasing and out of the blue rant. I'm reeeaaally tireeeeeeeeeed. Going to sleep now. And hopefully have a Disney-esque dream. Somehow.

The World's Most Influential Person Is...

moot. According to Time Magazine.

...

Who the hell's moot?!?

"The 21-year-old college student and founder of the online community 4chan.org, whose real name is Christopher Poole."

Oh. -.- (Read more here)

I bet he got 4chan people to hack or something, given the internet poll-based structure of voting. Edit: THEY DID!!! :O Wow and it's really interesting how it was done. Time, if you're really serious about this democracy thing, stick to pen and paper please.

Hahahhahaa, come to think of it, this is hilarious! :D Lol, funniest thing I've seen this week even. And never would I have imagined 4chan and Time Magazine Most Influential Person mentioned in one blog post. Well played, 4chan, well played. I'm sure your traffic is gonna go up like crazy, being mentioned like that in a periodical read by millions worldwide - online and offline. ... Or is this some ploy in the beginning to achieve that objective? Awesome.

Dead week = me dead. But that has just ended so now I'm moving on to exam week. Which is = ME DEAD LITERALLY. Expect little to no updates until mid-May after which I may be revamping this deteriorated run-down jetsam of Web2.0. But what the hell, I've been doing "little to no updates" for the entirety of my life. At least this one had a pre-warning of sorts lol.

Quick Update!

... I should be ashamed at myself for not updating my blog as often as I should. I mean, even Utada Hikaru has more regular updates than me!! (she's my new "side-obsession" these days btw) And she's a freaking busy/famous musician/singer sommore! Tsk tsk tsk.

Anyway, quick update on my non-existing life, which currently consists of the following:

1. Deadlines
2. Reports
3. Presentations
4. More deadlines
5. Studying
6. Mugging (different from studying, I say)
7. More deadlines again.
8. Listening to Utada! (her new album is out! Yay!) And revelling in the amazingness.
9. More studying
10. etc etc etc

So on and so forth.

And it's not even the dead week! I am so going to die when that comes along. Ugh. I can't wait for this semester to end. But I don't want time to pass by quickly because that means less time for mugging! It's all so stupid.

I hope everyone else is having more fun than me. I look forward to May when I get to see more of my friends. :) Until then, ugh. :(

Loving. Loathing. Looking Forward to.

In an uncharacteristically concise manner,

Loving:
  • my Geopolitics classes!
  • The fact that my laptop is so light and small. :D
  • Pilot Testing over and done with!
  • Getting an "A" for a paper. :D :D :D :D
  • Barack Obama. And his awesome speech made recently in Turkey. That is the reason why people voted for you. Got it?
  • Utada Hikaru. And all of her albums.
  • New routine.
  • Random (academic) discussions on the state of humanity. And the people who do that with me. :)
  • Catching up with classmates back here for holidays. May is coming! Yay!
  • The poetic quality of Japanese lyrics.
Loathing:
  • How easily I become tired. Must be getting old.
  • Many more deadlines left :(
  • Cannot play for Video Games Live!! D: Missing real cool opportunity! I mean, when is it ever gonna come my way again?!? I have a feeling I just missed the gig of my life. Or something to that effect.
  • And no way I can get tickets for Distant Worlds: Final Fantasy! D: again! Like, they come to tiny insignificant Singapore once in a million years?!?
  • Didn't catch Sam Mendes' "A Winter's Tale" because of stupid ear infection. Triple D: . Why am I so good at missing important gigs and performances!?
  • Lousy groupmates. Hmmph.
  • I realised I do more socialising with people overseas who come back for holidays than with people studying locally. Lousy me!
  • Coporate bureacracy.
  • NUH's sub-standard emergency rooms.
Looking forward to:
  • More catching up with friends.
  • Summer trips.
  • Playing badminton with real people again! :D Finally. Working out alone with machines, although effective, is never as enjoyable as exercising with breathing people.

"Supposedly, if you've seen over 85 movies, you have no life."

So, apparently I have a life. Hmmmm. Isn't it supposed to be the other way round? More movies is an indication of more hangouts equals to more life?

Bah, epic movie meme is an epic fail. What's with the abundance of romance/comedies and the meagre list of "inspirationals" and classics? Lousy. Total misrepresentation of the international movie industry. I think I can make a better film meme. Hmph.

Still Sick

Unfortunately, the latest bout of illness has not left me. In fact, its severity is fluctuating like the recent stock market. Or a GDP graph against time. And I can't say it's getting better because it's not. What I have is basically an ear infection, that causes the liquid in my head to be imbalanced, rendering me incapable of mobility or more specifically, moving my head because every time I do, I feel like puking. (for the loss of a better word to describe my circumstances)

Anyway, long story short, been taking nausea medicine and anti-biotics for 3 days but nothing seems to be working. And the worst thing is inability to move my head = cannot write, cannot read properly, cannot do essays, cannot think properly, cannot eat properly. Daily life and routines grind to a halt and is replaced by sleeping, being really bored or tortured by the height of work currently piling on my desk. Sometimes I can inch out something on the laptop (like now) but not for long before I have to hit the sack for my head (and the laptop) to stop spinning.

The whole thing has cost me LOTS OF PRODUCTIVITY. See, deadlines are fast approaching and I've already lost almost 3 days of time. Plus, opportunity cost is getting higher and higher and I don't seem to feel any better than on my birthday. Imma gonna see another doctor later.

Meanwhile, I'm so bored that I've resorted to googling my medicine names just to see what they do. And maybe through the process search for another alternative.

Film: Duplicity

I am so going to catch this when it lands in Singapore!! :D Just watching the trailer makes me quiver with anticipation. Wooooo. I love this type of snarky smirky chemistry between a couple; it's my favourite kind of chemistry. :) Have a feeling this is gonna be even better than Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Though, I kind of doubt the choice of Julia Roberts opposite Clive Owen. A little. Should have been someone younger more exotic or sexier. Less "America's Sweetheart" look or girl-next-door look. But meh, I hope it'd work out better when longer clips are available. Quick, looking for movie buddies for this one: interested parties please sign up!

Toradora!

An increasingly depressing anime that plunges me into the depths of emotional instability everytime I watch it. And every episode makes me feel like crying buckets.

Still, the best this season has to offer. Characters are so realistic it's extremely easy to empathise with them. Yet, you feel the maelstrom of feelings rousing in your chest because everything's so freaking complex at the same time. Is it there? Or not? Or just buried under more layers of exquisite subtleties? Typical J.C Staff: Gooood Job.

I friggin' love it. Because I love intricate complicated shit like that. And also because the characters are so 3 dimensional they're even more real than some of my friends and acquintances. Seriously, when a 2-D non-living person displays a hell lot more emotions with just a flicker of their eye, you know something is either very wrong with the 3-D living breathing person, or the anime is just hot stuff.

Latest: Ryuuji's finally coming to terms with his affections, which, contrary to popular belief, does not make things any less complicated. Taiga is becoming a wild card while Minorin and Amin get more cryptic over time. In particular, Ami is sooo going to reach her boiling point one of these days and I bet it's going to set something off a la previous episode.

I can't help but feel a huge rush of affection for Ami (more than the others at least) everytime she comes onto the screen, which is not a lot actually. Funnily enough, she's the easiest character to empathise with and yet the hardest to figure out, even for the people in the anime itself. Also, the most nuanced character, and the smartest ie funnest to watch -- I can sing her praises all day long. Bottom line is: I LOVE AMIN!

Toradora is a masterpeice, a brilliant work of art. Very worthy of anyone's time: I dare you to watch it without shedding at least a single drop of tear. Too bad it's gonna end soon and fortunately, not going to be turned into a cash cow. This has got to be one of the best series I have ever seen.

QUEST CREW on ABDC

Left to Right: Victor Kim, Ryan Feng, Steve Tereda, Ryan Conferido, Dominic "D-Trix" Sandoval, Brian Hirano, Hokuto "Hok" Konishi

Quest Crew is THE only REASON to watch Amercia's Best Dance Crew Season 3. Plus they've got Ryan Conferido, Hok Konishi and Dominic Sandoval from So You Think You Can Dance ( :DDDDD ), Steve Tereda, USA Martial Arts all-round Champion (:O omg) and Victor Kim, one of the funniest B-boy I've seen on the West Coast. In addition to fantastic creative chereography and innovative moves, they've really got no reason not to win. (Unless the beaten reality show narrative of the underdogs kick in... -.-)

This post is homage to the one and only Quest Crew -- I'm so rooting for them this season.

Episode reviews and rants behind the jump!

Week 1 - Sudden Death Challenge

(high quality highly recommended -- click on video)

Or, even better. Watch the whole full episode here! No kidding!

OMG. SICK. Nas's "Hero" part just killed the entire performance. And I'm sure they didn't comment on Steve's crazy butterfly kick at the end. So many details in the choreography = didn't get tired watching it over and over. Seriously, just sick.

One of the many selling points of Quest is the members themselves; they all have unique personalities and character traits that are fun to check out, even during uniform dancing.

Edit: Just a little background trivia I dug up. Victor Kim's a UC Irvine undergraduate majoring in Business and Economics. (what he said during auditions for SYTYCD Season 4). lol fellow economist. And Ryan Conferido is actually full Philipino! I always thought he was Asian-Latino mixed... though technically Philipinos are Asian-Latinos... somewhat.

Week 2 - Fit Test Challenge

Note: I'm not going to put up Youtube videos anymore. MTV is waging an intense campaign against the violation of copyrights and Youtube is sterilized daily for any video footage of the ABDC. It's such a hassle to search for good videos, embed them, and a few hours later they're "no longer available". It's a real chore to rinse and repeat every other day. Bleaugh, that happened at least 3 times for each video in this post. So I'm not going to put up videos anymore. Please watch the full episode as per the link given! They're free, quick, and available internationally. You can skip directly to the respective crew's footage (indicated on the video bar itself). I recommend watching Beat Freakz and Strikers All-Stars' sections as well -- they, in addition to Quest, are the current front runners apparently. You can watch Dynamic Edition for some clogging action and Fly Knicks for sexy stuff, if you want to. Basically: no more Youtube, catch high resolution, high quality videos from MTV itself! For free! :D Those who do have cable access, catch Randy Jackson's America's Best Dance Crew every Thursday/Friday on MTV channel.

Edit: Ok, Quest actually set up their own Youtube page and all their videos are legally (I hope) uploaded. So no more "video not available" = YAY! Thought, their videos only have the performance alone ie no preparation clip and judges's comments. Still, they're the only stable source on Youtube so I'll embed their videos from now on.

Edit AGAIN: Ok, so it turns out Quest putting their own videos is deemed to be illegal by Viacom. So from now on, strictly no more Youtube videos! (REALLY tired of looking for complete ones with good quality) If even Quest isn't allowed put up videos of their own dancing, I doubt any one else can.

Watch full episode here.

AAAH I was jumping out of my chair for this one. Awesome show! I give Steve my stink face. It's cool how they made the dance a story and paid homage to Japanese/Asian fighting games, not only with the story itself but also the imagery and cartoonish ending.

I see where JC and Lil' Mama's coming from but I agree to a larger extent with Shane; there were "moments" but they were spectacular moments clearly used to flesh out a story. Poses were to illustrate and pay tribute to forementioned fighting games, not a laspe/weakness in chereography.

Week 3 - Britney Spears Challenge

Full episode!!

Toxic! IMO feminine section totally rocked the performance. Feng = lol! Who'd thought? He's usually the chillest. And OMG RYAN!! I thought he was gonna do his backflipontohishead but nooooooo. Shawam/vogue reference ftw!!

wooo~ Beat Freakz and Strikers All Star were AWESOME this week too. Check them out: they're craaaaaazy good. I love them ALMOST as much as I love Quest. Though, QC may not be as sharp or clean, but they're definitely more dynamic and fun + they have loads of charisma and personality. Let's cross our fingers for all of them to be the final 3.

Edit: I just realised actually everyone can watch full episodes on the MTV ABDC webpage. D'oh.

Week 4 -- Whack Track Challenge

School = eeeeeeeeeeevil so sorry for the late update. This week, crews have to dance to whack tracks ie tracks that featured whack dance moves from the 1990s. Stuff like MC Hammer, NKOB, the macerena are perfect examples of the genre -- moves considered cool in 90s, but seriously only danced by geeks and nerd in the 21st century. Crews have to produce a routine to make the whack tracks look cool. Hmmm. Interesting.

Full episode ftw.

Overall, I didn't think this week was as good as the last one, mostly because of the theme -- music and style are too.... old. Not that the teams were lousy at adapting; they were great actually. Other than Quest, I was also impressed with Beat Freakz and their female breaking, so do check them out.

Quest-wise, I loved Hok's fake Bboy move. Seriously, I spent quite a few seconds trying to figure where's the head and where's the feet. Feng also impressed me with his awesome popping skillz. Man, that guy can pop, even though he's probably almost 6 feet. Reminds me of Dave Scott! Ahaha Asians represent. And Victor! The stall was sooooooo sick. Though, I'm starting feel lacklustre about their chereography; it's always the same formation and structure. Innovation, guys!

Fun stuff: there's this video on the MTV page showing Behind-the-Scenes for Week 4 and we get to see just what exactly Quest does in a practice session. :D

Week 5 -- Illusion Challenge

This week, teams have to incorporate magic tricks - or shall we say illusions - into their dancing and make the routine still rock. All the crews did what they were supposed to and threw in random magic tricks here and there too, which wasn't really that impressive with all the dancing action around it. Still, the whole challenge resulted in a really awesome week with everyone stepping up their game.

Still reeeeeaaally busy this week. I'm so short of time I didn't even finish the episode! :( Just watched the bare minimum performances. So pardon me for this short SHORT summary.

Frankly, I thought Beat Freakz (not Quest) were the best this week. Fully utilised their prop and overaccomplished the mission. (Though, internet is abuzz with discussion over a flying ball as a prop versus other groups' more challenging instructions) Quest: It's the first time I've seen them dance to hard hitting Hip Hop (usually it's more funky) and it was gooooooooood. Though, I'd like them to put more stuff through their body ie put the theme to better use but it's still sick so I'm happy. Strikers All Stars's choreography is getting bland for me and Dynamic Edition too cheesy. Fly Kicks put the S-E-X into sexy. Uhuh. Brought whooooole FAMILY of sexy back. Wooooh.

________________________________
Week 5: Battle of the Sexes

Full episode here.

I'm quite frustrated with the judges this week, especially with the amount of gender bias they exercised. The multitude of praise lavished onto Fly Knicks was soooo inversely proportionate to their level of choreography and dancing. And they did even worse than the Strikers' All-Stars, who were unfairly bashed I think. Quest and Beat Freakz's problem, on the other hand, was not as clear-cut, but definitely more fundamental. It's obvious that girls have lowered standards in terms of dancing, and more specifically b-boying. Why the different yardstick? If Victor was to produce headspins like Beat Freak's, he'd be thrashed. Horribly. Yet Beat Freakz get praised to the heavens for some less clean, less creative dancing and choreography. Though, I must admit, the robotic section was OMGAWESOME best piece of dancing in this episode. Still, it was so blatant, the way the judges were going on and on, that they've decided on Beat Freakz winning the whole thing already, no matter what Quest does. Yes, we need some change and I'm all for a female crew winning this competition. But not at the expense of critical and unbiased judgment, and deemed champion when another crew deserves it more. If we really want equality between the sexes, then stop using different colored eyeglasses to look at men and women; judge them based on the same rubrics, on the same level.

Clearly, there's a reason behind all this crap and it's most likely (IMHO) because they want a female group to win the competition, for whatever reason (monetary, political or otherwise), after male crews dominated the championship for the last 2 seasons. And when crews like Beat Freakz and Fly Knicks, who were awesome enough to get into the top 4 (though just not as good enough as Quest IMHO), comes along, they'll totally win the championship, even though they're not the best/they don't deserve it. Because the judges will go all out on them (Shane Sparks and the Mr. J "vote-for-sex Chasez I'm looking at you) and sway the votes their way.

I was kind of sad when Strikers' All-Stars left the competition. Still, reeeaaally hope Fly Knicks go home asap; I want my Beat Freakz vs Quest and Quest to WIN it.

< / rant >

Having said that (sorry for the long rant), opening number was nice; audience made to do some moves in unison at select parts of the song. Visually it worked but after a while it got quit lame. No crew really stood our for me but gotta say: All-Stars + Fly Knicks = SEX. Word.

Week 6: Hip-Hop Decathlon

Watch full episode!!

Whoops! Apologise for the long hiatus! Was getting killed by mid-terms. PHAIL WHALE. :(

I know this entry is reaaally late cos the finale's on Friday (Singapore time) but I have to get this out because this episode was EPIC. Summary: Quest killed EVERYBODY. Word. (ASIANS REPRESENT!!!)

The challenge this time was to incoporate some of Hip Hop's most difficult styles into their routine, namely (1) threading, (2) housing, (3) tutting, (4) krumping and (5) waving. Quest's performance this week speaks volumes; much louder than any previous weeks because they left their competition far behind. Granted, this weeks challenge may prove a little unfair for crews not professionally trained in Hip Hop, to the disadvantage of Beat Freakz (loved the attitude at the camera) apparently, but still they were way behind Quest, and almost at the same level as Fly Knicks (booty popping ftw btw). Both crews' choreography and dancing seemed bland compared to that of Quests this time round, but seriously, who can be win against Hok's tutting, D-trix's forearm air-flares, Victor's creative threading, Steve's unbelievable no-hands backflip from an indian squat, Hirano's stripping (lol) and krumping, Ryan's virtuoso dancing and Fengs's popping. These guys use their brains to choreograph and their hearts to dance; the other crews are just not strong enough.

Was kind of dissapointed with BFs, mainly with their second routine, where they were given absolute freedom to do what they want, show us what they're made of and blow everyone away. Yet they just gave a mediocre performance that was kind of... meh. I think it was the lame track that distracted me from their dancing but they're still an extremely awesome crew. ALMOST as good as Quest. Marginally. Almost. But now with two lacklustre performances in the show leading to the finale, I think they're guaranteened a legitimate reason why they don't win next week; they have no excuse.

AND I LOVE OR-QUEST-RA! Headspins done at varying speeds and housing on a PIANO + Hok doing old-school locking + Ryan playing the piano + Victor's improved version of his signature move + D-Trix flipping Steve over two dudes + clean, tight dancing on the unison parts and tricks + bboys wearing dinner jackets and chic clothes + dancing to remixed classical music = OMG WIN. THE definitive Quest performance.

Although it's really obvious by now, I still wanna reiterate this: Quest Crew is my winner because they possess creativity, variety, dynamism (through their individuality and yet still stay unified as a group) and never seem to run out of tricks. The most important quality they have, and what the winner crew should have, IMHO, is the limitless potential to grow and get better and better, which we have seen over the whole season. New tricks (I'm still wowed by Steve's Indian no-hands backflip -- have you even seen it before?!), new interface, new choreography and tons of talent to utilize. For me, Quest is the perfect crew. And no, you can't really compare Jabba and Quest because of the wild difference in styles. But if I have to choose, Quest will definitely emerge on top.

It does say something about Quest if they do win on Friday. That they are simply the best dance crew to grace ABDC's stage. Not only did they come out tops in terms of popularity and quality of dancing, they managed to beat this season's hype and demand (and gender bias) for a champion female crew. And, not to mention a really probable potential rigging by the producers and the judges of votes in favor of Beat Freakz for political and monetary reasons. Though, if Beat Freakz win this competition this season, the rating are definitely gonna drop for the next. So whatever happens on Friday, Quest Crew WINS in the end. And this episode is just another confirmation out of the many others that they just proved they deserved it thoroughly.

PS: BTW I love Steve's tribute to Strikers All-Stars at the start of the show. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

And lol at the camaraderie on the set. (Mobile toilets wtf?) This should be taken either before the rehearsal or real recording of the second performance. Looks like Shorty's delusional about her crush! :D

____________________________

Episode on Friday was epic; Beat Freakz and Quest dancing together was zomg awesomeness and the judges' picks were helluva entertaining too. I'm torn between QuestCrew + Dynamic Edition + Strikers All-Stars and Beat Freakz +Team Millenia + Boxcuttaz (...) 's performances because both were so good. Leaning a liiiiittle towards the latter though.

AND YAY QUEST IS AMERICA'S BEST DANCE CREW! Whoooopeee! I feel a little sad for Beat Freaks though -- they could have easily won it if not for a disappointing last episode. Ah well, those girls were already big before they came on the show so no lives lost. I'm sure their futures are all bright and shiny. Quest, on the other hand, has to endure a year of contractual attachment to MTV, which means we most probably will not see them as freely as usual. Meh. But there's money (and whole truckloads of fans) so good for them. I'll be anticipating their next performance (probably on Ellen or something), along with new tricks and more creative choreography. So.... Yay!!

I had lots of fun blogging ABDC for the past few weeks. Now that it's over, my sights are set on a new season of (my favourite dance show) So You Think You Can Dance, most likely premiering in May, WHICH IS SOON!! Yay!!!! :D And it'd be double the awesomeness if I get to travel to Canada during the Summer which means I'll be closer to LA whoooo! So watch this space for more epic blogging on SYTYCD 5 guys! Peace out.

I really want the days to pass by slower. And fate to be less cruel. Slow time down so what's (mayhaps) going to happen can seem further away. Ever since, I've been trying my best to make everyday seem longer, to make each hour count and each minute a precious point in time to be cherished and held through eternity.

Yet, no matter what I do, there's always that sense of inevitablity looming ahead. Of dread and the silent darkness. It doesn't matter how fast or far I escape, how much I run or how desperate I am, reality will catch up with me one day and I'll fall apart into the same wreck regardless of what I do.

The tears come, definitely; they always do. Followed by hyperventilation. Then the weeping, which always ends with the silent acknowledgement of pitiless truth. And the cycle starts again and again and again. Frankly, I don't want it to end. Never want it to end because this long bout of suffering is far better than its alternative; I'd rather run away and cry rather than face cold hard facts. That's right, escaping from the unescapable. Like some deluded clown.

Sometimes men love men.
And the there are bi-sexuals,

Oh, the cow in the meadow goes moo.
Then the farmer hits him on the head and grinds him up
and that's how we get hamburgers.
Nowwwwwwwww.... CHICKEEEEENS!!!"

> Partying in Clarke Quay. .... Or was it stuck in the Clarke Quay MRT station? Lol. Let's just say partying because it sounds more glamorous.

24) What song represents you?
> .... Songs are fundamentally inadequate vassals to "represent" people. Though, I'd make an exception for "Bohemien Rhapsody" by Queens. That song would represent the whole humanity if need be.

25) Name three people who might complete this.
> ........ I dunno. What are the odds?

26) What were you doing at 12 AM last night
> Writing a report for school.

27) What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up?
> "Dang I'm late. .... AGAIN!"

Yay. Finished. Ugh didn't think it was that long. Sorry if I sounded sarcastic/verbose/terse on most parts; I'm reeeally tired and am in need of a few good hours of sleep.

iTwit

I'm sure. Some stupid dude just sat beside me and choked me to death with his leftover smoke stench. .... In the LIBRARY. I mean, WTH? I'm still having coughing fits now even though he left about half an hour ago. Couldn't use a computer because he didn't have the brain to read signs and BOOK ONE. Gave up after one or two tries. Typical ignorant impatient stupid nus guy

Ugh. *coughs violently*

Doctor Nina

"Daijoubu...?" *drops toy* LOL!

:D

This totally made my day. :)

.... I wonder where she learnt the medical terminology/hospital speak though. They sound seriously accurate. And lol @ Nina for displaying gender bias at such a young age. Ahahaha.

Moar Nina please!

LOL.

I cracked up so much in lecture today because of these.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

RECON

Recon. Recon. Recon.

Is the most important thing in life.

Seriously. Good recon = good decisions = good life.

Might be a little toooo simplistic but it's not so abstract actually. Economically speaking, it's practically common sense. The more human capital/knowledge/information obtained, the higher your production capacity will be. In other words, the higher utility you will get out of life, and the more successful you will be.

In other news, I am undergoing a slight form of infatuation with my Sociology professor. Gasp. Which is nothing new because the best things in my life right now are TEH PROFESSORRIS. More than one have inspired me to venture on the road of academia and be like them one day. Possible career path? No. EXCEEDINGLY DESIRED career path.

Thank you very much.

The Oxford Comma

I echo the song. Who gives a fvck about it? In all its practicality, it only makes matters more ambiguous.

First week of school has started and before I'm ready, this whole bombardment of meaningless shite has befallen me. I now find myself wading in this pool of mundane rubbish slowly rising up to the level of my ears, drowning out whatever sliver of academic enthusiasm and wonder I happen to possess for the new fresh semester. Unenthusiastic attitude-problemed groupmates turned out to be the low point of my horrible first week (that'd teach me to bid and go for modules alone) plagued entirely by administrative problems and sticklers for bureaucracy. Courses I'm taking this semester are relatively harder and more boring and I've already missed one lecture because I saw the wrong timing in my extremely chaotic timetable. Must say though, GREAT start to the year. ... Not.

Excuse my wonderful limerics for the moment, but seriously, the future looks so bleak. Semester upon semester of the same, only occasionally peppered with activities that aim to perk you up but often failing miserably. College is supposed to be the most enlightening period of one's lives, the most empowering and filled with freedom. Strangely enough, or perhaps due to expectations, I still haven't experienced what was preached and promised by adults. What is wrong with me? There's a deep fear inside me right now that the high point of my life lies behind me instead of ahead. And I'm trying my utmost to prove that fear wrong, that there still is something to look forward to.

I've recently finished playing Prince of Persia. An epic masterpeice, despite its length. The ending was one of the most poignant ones I've ever seen, in terms of writing and the manipulation of the players' feelings. I don't want to spoil anyone but I was brawling (tears, I mean) the whole way through. ... Which means its good, not necessarily sad or otherwise. .... Because I cry at anything that's good, that's why! And nope, I won't say what I was crying for. Nothing is to be revealed here except my heartfelt recommendation of the game to anyone who wants to have a truly enjoyable experience for a day or so, which is the total time you'll most likely spend with the game. Even if you disregard the easy gameplay (even for casual gamers), the art direction (cell-shading, guys!) and the interactions between the two characters (yes, there are 2. Only.) is worth the price of the game alone. Seriously, the chemistry between the Prince and Elika is soooooo dynamic and reactive I was constantly yelling at the screen for them to make out already. And the ending, ooooh the ending, especially Elika's last line was extremely heartwrenching, to say the least, and embodies so many questions and nuances about what the whole game represents. Which surprisingly has some pretty philosophical elements mixed in with the action adventure. It's not a game you play anymore, but an experience that only the game can bring to you.

I don't need to say a word about the art and environmental design in the game; you can see for youself. (Yes, gameplay looks EXACTLY like the above art) Simply breathtaking. Embark on this swashbukling adventure with the Prince and Elika and immerse yourself in the mystique of 13th century Persia where you'll find action, love, evil gods (and ambivalent good ones) and beautiful lands of the forgotten, waiting to be explored. Get a copy of it right now, available on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. (hah! I sound like an advertisment!)

Luckily, my brief obsession with the Prince of Persia brought to my attention the leaked script of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The movie is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney, masterminds of the Pirates of the Carribean franchise, and clearly trying to create another blockbuster of epic proportions. I spent some time reading it and boy, it was some real good writing. Can just see the movie playing out in my mind already and if I had money, I'd invest some in this movie because it definitely is going to be some bomb. Read it here!

Twilight

I'm not exactly a crazy fan of the series (nor of Cedric Diggory Robert Pattison), nor am I one of those trolls going around aimlessly hating the books (and Robert Pattison). Yes, I have read the books and well, think they're alright actually. A little close to mediocre but still passable, though, I don't really get what the hype is about.
So I accompanied a friend to catch 'Twilight' recently and to find out once and for all what the huge fuss was about. Not surprisingly, it turned out to be sorely dissapointing, ie, movie letting the book down, IMO.

Seriously, unless you're a raging fangirl, think twice about spending money on this movie. The trailer-making for this movie must a peice of cake because everything that's interesting or significant plays for a total of 5-10 minutes. In times of Economic crisis, such as now, please save your cash and just watch the trailer. Seriously. That's all there is to the movie.

Now I shall save you some time, in addition to the saved money by presenting a very succint yet comprehensive summary of 'Twilight' the movie. Courtesy of Chira-chira, one of my favourite fandom artists. All that happened in the movie was...

Yes, that's all the happened. Serious. Bella's actress was so grossly unengaging I was wondering how she earned her pay. She had as many expressions as Edward/Robert Pattison. And that's saying something. Granted, it's a hard character to play but still, please show some emotional depth! Not just frown when you're thinking, frown when you're angry, frown when you're curious, frown when you're whatever. Bah.

And Mr. Pattison's not exactly a good actor. I'm sure scowling and looking fierce is not all that vamps do. Didn't feel darling Edward's character fleshed out. At all. The guy's just some lucky dude chosen to embody Edward and become his representative on Earth. I mean, yeah from some angles he does look cute, but overall, he's looks a lot like this.

The whole thing reminds me of Eragon the movie. Bad adaption of a pretty entertaining book. The change from paper to silver screen is always such a chore and the success rate is quite low. If you want some really good screenplay adaptation, watch the upcomiing "Revolutionary Road" and "The Reader" (both of which I have been pimping non-stop to anyone who cares to listen since they came out in the States), starring Kate Winslet, winner of the Best Supporting and Best Actresss category in the Golden Globes 2009 held just a few days ago. (Oscar for Kate!!!) Other Oscar-worthy films are surging onto Singapore shores in late January and early Febuary, including "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Doubt", "Slumdog Millionaire" etc. Waste your money on these movies please, not the incorrigible fan-driven 'Twilight'.

Black Man Given Nation's Worst Job

Black Man Given Nation's Worst Job

November 5, 2008 | Issue 44•45

WASHINGTON—African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation's broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, "It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can't catch a break."

I didn't quite agree with the article when it came out just after election day, but with the end of the escalating conflict in Gaza nowhere in sight, it seems like President-elect Obama may very well step up to become POTUS when part of the world (the messiest part in fact) is still in a state of war. Coupled with the deteriorating global economic crisis (and other problems the Bush administration has generously dumped on him), Obama's going to have a rowdy four years in office. I don't mean to be stereotypical but without a doubt, the black man has, once again, been given the nation's worst job.

Augustine the Hippo

I was supposed to be searching for information on the "Augustine of Hippo" and accidentally typed "Augustine the Hippo" into the search engine. Of course it rendered no results. And I even sat there staring at the screen for a few seconds wondering why.

D'oh!

Excuse teh extremely random post. I've been having a lot of dumb blonde moments (like the above) these days. Lack of sleep + indecent coffee tends to have that effect. Oh yes, not to forget the process of ageing! Big two-oh's coming and oh God, I so don't want to think about it.

Ah, filling up my (limited) free time with Prince of Persia and reading blogs of complete strangers. The latter is proving to be very entertaining.. and extremely time consuming. American college student's blogs are the most interesting not only because of the content but also the language they use, particularly humanities students. And there are sooooo many of them hidden out there it's like a vast land of liberals with exciting opinions and experiences (I like!) waiting for you to explore.

New semester's about to start and I feel like murdering my faculty. I didn't get allocated ANYTHING because of the demand and have to spend precious bid points on core modules. Extremely stupid if you ask me. Why can't you just open more classes? That's what we're paying you so much money for right? Grumbles. Now I have inadequate amounts of points left that will surely be insufficient for what I intend to do/fulfill. Why the hell are trivial administration processes impeding on one's desired academic career? Scarcity? (I don't think so) NUS SUCKS. ...There. I've said it. Hah! Let's get more generic and go on to say all local Universities suck! Woo! Hate-fest! The next step would be bureaucracy! Yay!

ARRGGGH. I can scarcely imagine what next semester's going to be like though. 3 major modules (2 minorly math based, 1 pure stats), 1 minor (completely stats) and 1 math module (calculus). It's like my worst nightmare come true. (I SUCK AT MATH!!) Gah, I just wanna get it over and done with and hopefully improve my (relatively nice-looking) CAP score. When can I get out of this unstimulating, mind-numbing paternalistic society??!

Hmph. *goes back to Augustine OF Hippo*
