Liverpool FC. Ah, just the name of the team makes me smile. A football team recognised worldwide as one of the best football teams in the world. Here's why: 18 times Premier League title holders, 5 time European Champion, 7 time FA Cup winners...and more. Liverpool FC a.k.a. The Reds.
I've been a Liverpool fan ever since I was 10 years old. How did it start? Well my papa is a football fan, and he supports...MU. My brother who was later influenced by him and supports Arsenal. It was the year 2001 when I was 10. My bro kept nagging me to support an EPL team. (I thanked him for that later) Then one night, my papa was watching football and my bro nagged me again. I couldn't take it anymore. So I looked at the tube, saw the team in red and asked my father...
YC "Papa, what's the name of the team wearing red?"
Papa "Liverpool"
YC "Are they strong?"
Papa "Yes, one of the best"
So, that's it. It was from that moment on that I decided to support that team wearing red. Later on, I watched the games they played and noticed a rather small player who seem to be unable to stop scoring for Liverpool. His name is Michael Owen. He is one of the main reasons why I started to support Liverpool seriously. He's not tall for an Englishman, he's swift, he's agile, he has the pace, he has the skills. I began to idolise him. So that's it, Lai Yoong Chieh - Liverpool FC supporter since 2001.
I remember back then, the usual and very consistent first team included a handful of notable players. I remember the amazing moments that Emile Heskey and Michael Owen created as the paired strike force of Liverpool. I remember Sammi Hyypia with the skipper armband. I remember Phil Thompson managing the team while Gerrard Houllier was fighting a heart disease. Patrick Berger was a rather phenomenal midfielder back then.
I am a huge fan to an extent that I would go emo and feel like killing somebody if Liverpool loses a match they shouldn't. But I'm still unable to memorise the full lyrics of the "You'll Never Walk Alone" chant.
MOST NOTABLE and MEMORABLE LIVERPOOL PLAYERS (IMO):
Michael OwenStanding at a height of 173cm, this chap scored a total of 118 goals in 216 appearances. Unfortunately, during the peak of his career, this bloke left for Real Madrid in 2004. I hated him for doing so. But he returned to the Premier League in August of 2005 to Newcastle United. He's no longer as good as he is. Sad. Sigh.
Emile HeskeySold to Wigan from Liverpool. Currently in Aston Villa and still earning caps for England.
Robbie FowlerA true Kop legend. Robbie Fowler netted a total of 120 goals for Liverpool and scored the fastest ever hat-trick in just 4 minutes 30 seconds.
Dietmar Hamann(left)
John Arne RiiseDietmar Hamann is by far my most favourite defensive midfielder of Liverpool. Currently playing for Man City. John Arne Riise (left back/left midfielder) has the sweetest left foot I've ever seen. The goals he scored with his left foot are lightning and always a good distance away from the goal line. I miss both of them.
Stéphane HenchozWhich striker wouldn't be intimidated when faced with such a brute looking defender? Not someone to mess with. Definately a factor that contributed to Liverpool's solid defense back then. Retired.
Vladimír ŠmicerThis attacking midfielder played his last game for Liverpool in Istanbul, scoring one of the 3 goals that saved Liverpool. Also scored in the penalty shootout.
Djibril CisseWhy did Benitez sell him away? He's a skilled striker, I enjoyed watching him score goals.
Neil MellorAlright, I think this guy doesn't get the credit he deserves. It's because of the goals he scored that Liverpool made it to the Champions League finals in 2005. He also scored a last minute winner against Arsenal in the Premier League. You get my credit, bro.
Harry KewellMidfielder from down under. This Liverpool number 7 scores goals with awesome free-kicks. Brilliant in passing. Sorely missed. Currently in Galatasaray.
Jerzy DudekThough inconsistent at times, he's my favorite goalkeeper. The Hero of Istanbul. Managed to block off two of Schevchenko's shots in extra time and imitated Bruce Grobbelaar's wobbly legs in the penalty shooutout of the Champions League final to take the trophy.
Sammi HyypiaFormer skipper of Liverpool FC when Houllier was in charge. An awfully good defender. I just love to see him run up to the opponents penalty box when a corner is taken. Love his headers.
Jamie CarragherOur beloved vice-captain of Liverpool. I dare to say, he's one of the best defenders in the world, though he makes silly mistakes and scores goals for the opponents at times. But I love him. A truly experienced defender who saved Liverpool's a** many times. What is Liverpool FC without Carra?
Xabi AlonsoAhh, a visionary midfielder. At times, the brain of the team. His passes and thru-passes are sublime, and so are his free kicks. I'm glad you never left for Arsenal.
Steven GerrardOur beloved captain. I think, the best midfielder and footballer in the world. He scores goals in open play, he scored through his freekicks. He makes the best passes. The heart and inspiration of the team. He's unselfish in the penalty box. He's calm when we're sitting on our bums biting our nails and cursing the gaffer. He scores at critical times. I love him. Also, a hero who changed and controlled the game in Istanbul - inpsirational, influential, impressive.
Fernando Torres a.k.a.
El NiñoOne of the best things that have ever happened to Liverpool. My favourite striker. Fernando Torres scored 33 goals during his first season in Liverpool. With his first Premier League goal against Chelsea in 2007. Not just a hero for his club, but for his country as well. Played, inspired and contributed in the team that won the Euro 2008. Currently struggling to maintain form and has scored 8 Premier League goals. I expect more goals from him. Created golden moments for Liverpool when he netted in two goals to beat Chelsea in the last 6 minutes. Torres! Nunca Caminaras Solo!
Robbie KeaneAlright, here's Robbie Keane, just for Gene Wern. I must admit that I love him too. Though at first I did not agree with the amount of transfer fee that Benitez paid to get him over to Merseyside last July. Yes, I enjoy watching him playing for Tottenham and I was a tad excited that he joined Liverpool. Soon, we anggap him as our lucky charm, whichever game he played, Liverpool won. He is a phenomenal striker. Sadly, Benitez never gave him a chance to maintain his form and let him warm the bench. Now he's back in Tottenham as their skipper. I think it's better for him this way. =)
Peter Crouch (the pole)
When Gene Wern told me to put up a photo of him, I immediately thought of this goal of his and wondered if they have a photo of him doing it and thanks to google, I found it. Alright, this guy stands a towering 201cm tall and he's an amazing striker. He arrived in Liverpool in 2005 from Southampton. Yes, his headers are superb, though when he runs, he looks clumsy and I always feel like a huge pole running. I never want to stand beside him. Some of all the goals he scored are fantastic. Unfortunately our Benitez sold him to Portsmouth. But still, cheers to him.
Also memorable to me but lazy to find their photos are:
-Patrick Berger-Djimi Traore-Igor Biscan-Gary McAllister-Milan Baros-Steve FinnanMy Fellow WalkersI'm not walking alone. I'm walking with my fellow Liverpool fans - Sylvester, Ju Vern, Gene Wern and Sean. But come to think of it, there aren't many Liverpool fans among us, huh? Sad la...We need to influence more people. But having only the 4 of you to talk about Liverpool is nice enough. =D
My Most Memorable Liverpool Moment:Istanbul 2005
I was sitting alone in the living room when I saw AC Milan put 3 pass Jerzy Dudek in the first half. I had a badminton appointment the following morning. It was still the exam period, Seni Paper 2 that day. I told myself, that's it la, lose already, go sleep, you need it. When I woke up, my dad told me...Liverpool won. I said half yawning "what la, don't bluff me la. " He answered "3-3 Liverpool won on penalties."
LIVERPOOL FOUGHT BACK AND WON...and I MISSED the whole things. The good part.
But I was still happy, over the moon and delighted. I remember that morning. The first thing I told Sylvester....He was smiling sheepishly.
My Most Ridiculous Liverpool Moment:I think this happened in 2002. My family and I were in Taiping, Perak. We were staying in a hotel. No live football telecast. Liverpool to play Chelsea that night. My dad and bro came back to the hotel room with some fake jerseys. My bro bought a Chelsea jersey for fun. That night, the air-cond was really cold, so I put on that darn Chelsea jersey.
The next morning, Chelsea beat Liverpool 4-0.
Since then, I never wear blue before Liverpool plays. Believe it or not.
Liverpool ah...
I've seen Liverpool win the Champions League title in 2005. I've seen them win the FA Cup. I've seen them win the Carling Cup. But I've never seen them win the Premier League title throughout my lifetime as a Liverpool supporter. Liverpool ah...Benitez ah...now we're 2 points behind MU and they have a game in hand ah. Why we draw 5 games? If we won that 5 games...the title would be closer to your grasps!
Come on la, if MU win the title again this season, we'll no longer hold the record for most Premier League titles ah...Sometimes I wanna whack you, sometimes I wanna kiss you. I don't understand the way you manage your team, at times I suspect someone kidnapped your family and threatened you. But whatever you do, I must support, and please, win the Premier League title this season, for me, for us Red fans...You'll Never Walk Alone.
Let's hope this Liverpool squad will win the English Premier League title this season =)
