Bookmarks: Throwing Muses

If you're anything like me, you'll have been hoping for a comprehensive guide to Throwing Muses' discography to reveal itself. It looks like there's been a great one on the web for a while:

CAD 2013 _Red Heaven_ produced by Throwing Muses with Stuart Boyer
1992 furious / firepile / dio / dirty water / stroll / pearl //
summer st / vic / backroad / the visit / dovey / rosetta stone
/ carnival wig

Leslie Langston plays bass. Bob Mould (ex Husker Du) sings on
"Dio". A bit less stunning on the songwriting front, but at least
it still proved that the band were still alive. Initial UK CDs
(CAD D 2013) came with...

I collect, I reject: Wool offers

Wool FM is an interesting volunteer-run station in New England, and they're having a fund-raising drive. Much of it you'll have to go to America to take part in, but there's three lots which you can bit for online:

Original contact sheet from photo shoot for Throwing Muses album "House Tornado." Autographed by Kristin Hersh.

Original recording notes for song "Mania" by Throwing Muses. Track Sheet with notes in pencil. Hand-typed lyrics (on an actual typewriter) typed by Kristin Hersh, with production notes and doodles from Throwing Muses. c1988. Autographed by Kristin Hersh.

"Untitled," by Juliana Hatfield. Original painting, acrylic on canvas board, 9" X 12" 2009.
All three things would make an excellent gift for a discerning person, don't you think?

Throwing Muses weekend: Counting Backwards

It'd be lovely to have something like The Late Show back on TV, wouldn't it? This is The Muses doing Counting Backwards on the programme:

And, since that ends somewhat suddenly, here's a fuller version of the same song:\

Throwing Muses weekend: Dizzy

This would be the big hit, probably. Caught during the first run of Channel 4's never-much-loved Big World Cafe:

Embed and breakfast man: Throwing Muses

With Kristin Hersh just having released her book-album combo Crooked, what better time for a look back at the genuinely-manic-driven Throwing Muses?

Probably the greatest band ever to come from Rhode Island, they were the first Americans to sign to 4AD and - for those of us to whom these things matter - much more of a Melody Maker band than an NME one. And they were awesome.

Look, this is how awesome they were: Red Shoes, live on stage at Glastonbury:

There's not much of Glastonbury 1989 floating around online, so this will be a fairly brief section.

First, here's Throwing Muses doing Mania:

My firth, my larth, my everythink

Not that it's open season on the NME right now, but our delight at hearing that the former leader of Throwing Muses is playing a gig in Lancaster Library on May 23rd was slightly tempered by the surprising change in her name:

Kristin Herth?

But let's not be too hasty to rush to judgement, eh? We all miskey from time to time. It's not like the NME doesn't know the name of one of the biggest alternative musicians of the last two decades, is it?

Oh.
