Fête des lumières 2008

Finally I'm going to blog about the fête des lumières (an annual light festival in Lyon) The actual festival is on the 8th of December, but the city is usually lighted up for the weekend closest to it. This year the 8th fell on a Monday, so we went out on the 6th, Saturday night.

I haven't been to Lyon's fête des lumières since my first year in INSA, and that was three years ago! Luckily, according to the others, this year's was the best, so it seems I didn't miss much. During the festival, the buildings in town are lighted up...look at the photos to find out more! (I have Ping Tarng to thank for quite a number of these photos; I chose to post his when they're better than mine!)

This was at Place des Célestins (the building is a theatre, I believe)

Place des Jacobins:

fontaine de poissons (fountain of fish); see the shadows?

from the riverbank

that's Fourvière on top of the hill

while crossing a bridge

a boat on the river

Then there is the cathédrale St Jean.

If the colours didn't change, we could've thought they were painted! I thought this was the best...till we went to Terreaux.

Gare St Paul:

Place des Terreaux (where the town hall is):

the horses move! ;)

There was actually a story about a baby giant who was playing with his toys. Here the splotches of colour were his doing and he is writing on the wall.

inside the town hall

Just so you manage to appreciate exactly what an awesome feat this lighting is, here is a photo of the cathédrale St Jean on a normal day (I wanted to put photos of the other buildings for comparison as well, but I either don't have them or don't have them handy. And I'm lazy :P)

That's all folks! ;) Stay tuned for my Greek adventures :P

Home sweet home

Well, I'm back from my holiday. My 10-day holiday (Saturday to Monday). It's probably my longest trip ever...and I'm glad to be back home! Especially since I fell sick at the end...it was a good thing the best was over!

On Saturday the 20th of December (the beginning of the holidays) I went to Sia Ven and Yilie's place in Rouen, where we met up with some of the others who were joining us on the trip to Greece. I managed to meet up with Mimi, whom I hadn't seen for some time, as well. Then on Tuesday we set out for Athens (we took a flight from Paris). We were to leave Athens the next Monday, and rather than to spend a whole week in Athens, we flew to Santorini (a volcanic island) to spend two days there. Unfortunately there was a glitch in this plan, and we were separated into two groups going to Santorini, one group going there and returning to Athens a day later.

We took a lot of photos, so I hope to post them here and let the pictures do the talking...except that most of the photos are on someone else's camera! So there might be a little wait before I can get them...

Late for breakfast

Something I found in an old e-mail:

It was a busy morning, approximately 8:30 am, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's, arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He stated that he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.

On exam it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, we began to engage in conversation I asked him if he had a doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I then inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer Disease.

As we talked, and I finished dressing his wound, I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. I was surprised, and asked him. "And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?" He smiled as he patted my hand and said. "She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is."

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, "That is the kind of love I want in my life."

True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be. With all the jokes and fun that are in e-mails, sometimes there are some that come along that have an important message, and this is one of those kinds. Just had to share it with you all.

"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything that comes along their way."

Peace is seeing a sunset and knowing who to thank.

Please share this with someone you care about -

I JUST DID.....

Rhino oh rhino

Today I would like to introduce you to INSA's resident rhino. ;)

During my first year in INSA, it was in the Humanités building. It was a permanent fixture...I probably thought that it must have been there for years (I don't know whether that's the case, though)

I can't remember when exactly, but I believe that sometime during my second year, the rhino was moved out onto the lawn outside the building. I don't know why... and one day it was painted pink. Again, I have no idea why...at first I thought it was vandalism (and maybe it was), then maybe I thought INSA just had leftover paint and decided to paint the rhino, since they were going to leave it there. The rhino has never gone "home" to the Humanités building since, by the way.

I really can't be sure about the timeline for those events...it's a little blurred in my memory whether the rhino was already pink during my second year or whether it was during my third year. But what I can be sure of is when I first saw it in its current state.

It was when I had just returned to INSA last September (meaning my fourth year). I walked past our dear rhino, and *gasp*

Is this a rhino or a cow?

What's more, it has patches of some other colours on it.
(On the other photo, it's not as clear but there are traces of yellow.)

Well, I guess it's better than pink :P

I've been wanting to blog about the rhino ever since that day when I first got back, but I didn't take a photo until months later (as you can see, leaves had fallen by the time I took the photos), and after taking the photos they sat on my computer for some time...so there you go, the post is finally published!

[the title of this post is a play on bangau oh bangau, a Malay children's song that I mentioned in a previous post]

What I want for my birthday

I've found what I want for my birthday!

One of these:

seen in Printemps in Rouen

:P

30 euros each :/

Edit:
Okay, they don't look so cute here. But they looked a lot cuter "in person", when I first saw them.

What a week!

Note: disorganized entry. The first part was written before leaving for class, and the rest after. And it's about my internship.

Left hanging, not knowing when, or whether there would be a reply.

Last Thursday he said Friday or Monday. Monday night...still no reply. On Tuesday I called him...and he told me he'd give me a reply by the end of the week. But "by the end of the week" can mean anything from Tuesday to Friday. So I wait.

Harcèle-les, Fabien told me. So I harcèle-d them. I called him again this morning. And he told me that he would give a reply before leaving for the holidays tonight.

~~~~~
And during my class this afternoon, I got two phone calls. (which went to my voice mailbox, since my phone was switched off) My class was from 2pm to 5pm, but the teacher let us leave about half an hour early today (it's the holidays!) So after the class, I switched on my phone and listened to the messages. The first one was from the first company where I had the interview, pressing me again for a reply (not that I blame him...) The call was put through at 2:57pm. The second call, that came through at 4:10pm, was from the last interview I went for, the one whose reply I was waiting (and biting my nails, if I bit my nails) for. And it told me that I was accepted!! I was darn happy, I was wincing as I listened to the first message, and hoping that the second message would be the reply I was waiting for, and at the beginning of the second message when the guy identified himself I was just hoping and hoping for a yes, I can't tell you how relieved I was when I heard that I had been accepted!
So...the stress is over. Finally. Whew.
Really, all week was really stressful, with the constant worry that it wouldn't be okay. With peaks on Monday and Friday. 'Cos at first I thought I would get a reply on Monday. So I stressed. Comme un ressort tendu au point de rupture. So highly strung, to breaking point. Monday night there was ping pong, which helped...the rest of the week, there wasn't much I could do but wait...but Friday I started stressing again, like Monday all over again.
Heck, even Thursday night I was already starting to stress. We went to see Camille's concert, I was stressing on and off, and after that while walking home with Fabien, he related to me the funny story of his interviews (all packed into the same week, and more) which kinda helped me relax a little. (Merci Fabien!) Well, at least until the next day.
Oh yeah, and I should end this post on a happy note, especially since I've got my internship. In the ping pong competition on Thursday, I came in 5th out of the 10 unranked players, and I was the first girl (of course, that doesn't mean much 'cos the only other girl wasn't much of a competitive player) But I managed to win 3 out of the 5 matches I played, and all except one were pretty close (we have to win 3 sets to win, and in one match we played 5 sets, and I lost the last set 11-9 :/ ) So, for being the first girl, I won a red t-shirt with a U (for sport universitaire, I think) on it. But it's L-sized (too big for me) and not that good quality. Doesn't matter...that's almost always the case anyway! :P
One little, two little, three little Santas
I was wondering when I would be able to post this, but our teacher didn't come for our 10-12pm tutorial today, so I have some time!
On Monday the TTIC1 organised a competition open to all students. They organise about five or six such competitions throughout the year, and usually I don't bother posting about them unless if there is something exceptional to post about. Which happens to be the case this time ;) And what's more, I was lucky enough to have brought my camera, because Santa was there! And not one, but three! (unfortunately they didn't bring presents :P)
It seems that it was an SGM (another INSA department) thing...they had Santa costumes for the third years (I don't know the details though) So three of the players came dressed as Santa, and they even played while dressed as Santa (though some gave up and played in normal clothing in the end, I think the beard kinda got in the way!)
while warming up
Santa vs Santa, who will win? (I bet on Santa! lol)
This is Pierre, the third Santa, who didn't want me to take a photo of him :P
and one of the Santas from the first photo playing
I took the first photo with the camera set on automatic flash, and the others on night view. The lighting is better when it's taken with the night view setting, but unfortunately the flash goes off twice, so when they're playing the pictures are very blurred. I had taken a few other photos of Santa playing, but they're too blurred to be any good...too bad!
The next day, the AS2 had a Christmas meal (repas de Noël) instead of the normal practice session. I brought my camera, and I passed it to the organisers (there were three of the AS members who were in charge) to take photos (I was busy eating ma :P) Then when they were serving dessert (they had ice-cream Yuletide logs - that's what bûches de Noël are called in English, right?) I took a few photos.
all busy eating :P
They had bought two logs with different flavours, and one of them was half-melted. So Thomas had a pretty hard time serving it! You can see that it isn't really in slices...
that's Patrice (our prof) giving the thumbs-up sign
the other log was better (as in not melted) so it was easier to cut and serve!
(we managed to have actual slices this time)
1 TTIC: the INSA table-tennis club
2 AS: the sports association; the members go to play in competitions on Thursday afternoons. This is the table-tennis one.
Of course, some people, like me, are in both the TTIC and the AS.
Our affair is over
Here's a pretty funny "game" I saw on another blog. So I decided to post my reply here.
Dear Winnie:
I don't really know how to tell you this, but our affair is over. I think I realized it when I changed tennis shoes in your closet and I saw you sit on my avocado plant. I'm sure you're ashamed enough to understand that your Honda sucks. I'm returning your ring to you, but I'll keep David's tricot outfits as a memory. You should also know that I never openly mocked eggplant-fetishism.
Greetings to your frog Leonard,
Ramblings
As Wan Ying put it, I think I'm going through a quarter-life crisis.
I'm in a limbo. Between studies and work. Wondering what I want. Wondering whether I'm on the right track, whether this is what I really want. Wondering...all the time. About just about everything.
But it doesn't matter. I have a future. Uncertain as it is, I know some things are certain. Some people will be there for me. They have never let me down. Yet. But I'm sure they never will try.
GE. Appreciate the years you have left. After that, it will be over, there will be a brand new world waiting. You don't know what it is yet. But there will be something. Optimism can do much good.
Am I trying to convince myself? Maybe. But that's the way it is. "The eternal pessimist, with a few grains of optimism thrown in." That's the way I described myself on Facebook. Those few grains might as well be sown. And maybe they will grow. Grow...and blossom.
Edit:
A la frontière. Dans les nuages. Il faut peut-être monter...pour sortir du brouillard.
A little update
The once-malfunctioning link is working again :)
I don't know why it stopped working correctly, but I just searched for the code again and replaced the old one with the one I just found, and it works. The code looked essentially the same, I have no idea what's changed.
But then, who cares? :P
Broken-down tram
Today as I came out of the Part Dieu commercial centre, I saw a rare scene: a tram stopped halfway at the stop (by that, I mean it hadn't arrived where it usually stops), and another one a few metres in front of it.
There were TCL (the public transport company) people around...I guess the tram had broken down, and it seems that they were going to tow it away with another one.
I snapped two photos with my phone (I love the person who first thought of integrating a camera into a phone, it is so discreet!), so here they are:
the TCL guy fixing something
the rescue tram; see the bar sticking out at the bottom?
Of course, my interpretation of the events could be wrong...but I do think that's how it was!
My recurring injury
Okay, it's just a bruise :P
Too much smashing, and being too short. What's short got to do with it? Well, tall people can smash while bringing down their arm. But I can't. So I have to use only my wrist, and the end of my racquette hits myself. Whoa...self-injury. I'm an expert.
(this post would be filed under "sarcastic" if I had such a tag on my blog. But I prefer not to, 'cos I would then drown in my own tags)
Okay, since I'm writing this I might as well tell you where that came from. I played badminton last night at the BIC (Badminton INSA Club) internal competition. It was mixed doubles, and my trusty partner, Yu Hang couldn't make it, so I just went there and luckily managed to find someone else looking for a partner. I played mostly near the net, which is kinda why my smashes were all direct, near-vertical ones which ended up banging the racquette onto my wrist.
And since I'm doing badminton every week in sports class, I've been having this bruise on and off since a few weeks. It disappears pretty quickly though, so that's okay ^_^
Some blabbing about predictive input
Maintenant? Tu y es ou tu vas y aller?
What's so special about these two sentences?
Nothing much, really. Only that even though they're in French, I managed to type every one of these words in a message, while having the T9 language set to English.
For those of you who might not know what T9 is, it's the predictive input on a mobile phone. I think some phones have it called another name.
This is another one of my meaningless posts...I wrote this message on Wednesday last week, when Thierry asked me whether I was going to that GE night. It struck me after sending the message that even the simplest words didn't come up at once (usually the commonly-used words come up first in predictive input) so I checked my language setting. And so I saw that it was set to English instead of French. But I was going out, so I didn't have time to blog about it right away. And so here it is. I have several other things I want to blog about, like the fête des lumières I mentioned, but they're with photos and need more planning to do it correctly, which I don't have the time for right now. (yeah...right. If I didn't write all these little posts I would have time for the "bigger" ones :P But who cares, that's what a blog is for)
So, signing off for now. ^_^
The disadvantages of having good handwriting
I'm really in a blogging mood these days. I keep writing about the most insignificant things. This time, as you can see from the title, it's about handwriting.
First of all, a disclaimer. I might have won a handwriting prize before, but it was a long time ago. (I won a handwriting trophy in kindergarten, and a clip-clock in Standard One) Since, my handwriting has kinda deteriorated (or so my mother complains says) But at least I can still write well when I want to. ;)
So, back to the title. So what are the disadvantages of having good handwriting?
You can't read bad handwriting.
You see, I was doing a permanence (see bottom for details) with Paul last night, and I was drafting a thank-you letter for the interview I had just went to. I had scrawled my ideas (sentences, phrases, etc) quickly on a piece of paper before leaving home, and I was continuing my thinking during the permanence. And Paul simply managed to read it, without the slightest difficulty!
Now when I scrawl, sometimes it's because I'm writing quickly, and sometimes it's because I don't want it to be readable to anyone (like any stranger) at first glance. But it seems that this "tactic" isn't working. Why? 'Cos if someone has worse handwriting than me, he will manage to read it! (as was the case with Paul; when I was surprised that he managed to read so easily what I had written, he readily admitted that it was "because he wrote worse than me".) Whereas when I glance over at something someone else wrote, I usually find it hard to read unless if I'm familiar with that person's handwriting!
About the permanence: the table-tennis club in INSA (TTIC) is holding an internal competition next Monday, and we were in the INSA restaurant to do a little publicity for the event. They call it doing a permanence...though I don't quite know why :P
Oh yeah, and another note: my scrawl is really bad. I don't even write out each letter correctly, I just write enough to be able to remember later what I was thinking of, so that I don't forget a certain phrase I thought of using.
And should I mention that we have the best HU3 teacher? Today she brought Pim's (a type of orange-filled cake/biscuit) by LU and its equivalent by Casino (a supermarket chain), so that we can play out a scenario where LU takes Casino to court for imitation of their product.
I'm so glad I'm not in the other group, who had 2 classes cancelled, and once had to come at 8am before finding out! Muahaha...
Of food and being careful
Remember the macaroni bake I wrote about last year? I ended that post saying that I would try making it with leftovers, so that there would be one thing less to cook. I have done it a few times since, and this time I've got photos!
The other day I stir-fried minced beef with carrots and capsicum, making a dish to accompany my rice.
in the making
(okay, it was just before transferring it to a dish)
served
I put the leftovers in the fridge (you can put it in the freezer if you want to keep it longer) and then used it to make the macaroni bake:
It's penne instead of macaroni, but who cares? You can use spaghetti if you want.
Besides, today while playing badminton in sports class, I totally whacked myself. Twice. I've whacked myself before (when you're an idiot like me, it's hard to avoid :P) but never this badly... I first whacked myself on my fingers (I believe it was while doing a serve, a simple one while warming up, so I just didn't move my hand away in time), which left me wincing for the next 5 or 10 minutes, maybe even 15! And guess what, as I'm typing this, one of my fingers is still smarting!
Well, the other one was more "normal", it had already happened several times before; there was this lovely smash I couldn't resist making, and I whacked myself on the leg (with the momentum of the racquette) At least the smash was good, or else it'd have been for nothing! lol
Hopefully this will remind myself to be more careful next time!! But then, I never learn...
I wrote this tomorrow
Facebook is wonderful. You can write tomorrow what you write today. Um...no, you can write today what you write tomorrow. Um...no, not exactly. More like...what you wrote today is written tomorrow. Don't understand? A picture paints a thousand words. So here's a picture.
comments on a photo
I never noticed this before, so just decided to post it...for fun!
Do not read. Do not read.
Guillaume Musso's Parce que je t'aime is a good book. I haven't finished it yet, and I really shouldn't continue because I have work to do. The "good" thing is that even though some parts are pretty gripping, after finishing a certain chapter I can put the book down and do something else without thinking about the story too much.
But I still want to finish it.
Do not read. Yet.
Fleurs en dentelle
Ce post est pour ceux qui se plaignent que j'écrive mon blog en anglais.
N'empêche que j'ai déjà écrit des posts en français...pas beaucoup, mais il y en a! Par exemple celui sur France Telecom que Lionel a bien aimé...lol
Hier en HU3 (humanités) on a parlé de marques et des dépôts de marques...et on devait trouver une marque pour une entreprise qui fabrique des fleurs artificielles en soie et matières synthéthiques. Pour faire ça on travaillait en petits groupes...
Bien préparés pour le test de SED de l'après-midi, avec le cerveau bien saturé des réseaux de Pétri connexes et fortement connexes, on était d'abord parti sur le nom Pétriflora, avec un joli logo de réseau de "pétrifleurs" (enfin, des places en forme de fleurs (d'ailleurs en relisant ce mot ça me fait penser aux fleurs pétrifiées...euh, les fleurs ont trop peur donc elles bougent plus? :P ) ) fortement connexe (c'est vrai, je vous assure, avec 2 places et 2 transitions bien reliées entre elles)
Je sais plus qui a eu cette idée mais c'était soit Albin soit Benoît...ils ont même dessiné plusieurs logos, mais la prof est passé voir et nous a dit de chercher une marque moins descriptif, donc on a un peu lâché l'idée. Mais je trouve que Pétriflora reste un bon nom pour les gens qui connaissent pas les réseaux de Pétri (j'ai recours à Wikipédia pour faciliter la compréhension des non GE!)...justement ce nom m'a aussi suggéré la boîte de Petri (que je connaissais pas sous ce nom d'ailleurs...je la connaissais en malais, piring Petri)
Inspirée par la soie, Oulimata a proposé Dentelle. Ça vous évoque peut-être un autre produit, mais nous, on parlait bien des fleurs artificielles! ;)
Après il fallait dessiner un nouveau logo, puisque le premier marchait plus avec ce nouveau nom... Les garçons ont commencé à écrire Dentelle avec une fleur qui part du début du D, et j'ai fait un peu le contraire avec le mot Dentelle qui sort d'une fleur.
Donc je vous met ma création (quel oeuvre d'art!) ici... J'ai réussi à dessiner quelque chose! Je suis fière de moi! lol
Enfin c'est pas très clair, c'est un peu nul, etc... mais je dessine pas souvent...disons que je manque d'entraînement, pour avoir une excuse :P Et en plus j'ai pris la photo avec mon portable parce que j'ai la flemme de sortir mon appareil photo...ce qui améliore pas la qualité de l'image!
Précisons quand même que j'ai les droits d'auteur dessus...personne ne peut reproduire ce dessin sans mon accord! (j'ai bien appris mon cours sur la propriété intellectuelle! :P )
Le groupe de Parvan a proposé comme marque Cvete qui veut dire fleur en bulgare. Mais on savait pas (et vous savez pas :P) trop comment le lire... Pour les deux autres groupes, l'un a dessiné une feuille de cannabis (il paraît) comme logo (je sais plus quel était le nom de la marque, mais c'était pas cannabis ;) ) et l'autre une tulipe qui marche comme logo, pour aller avec la marque Tulipe Noire.
Aussi, la prof nous a parlé d'une idée trouvée par des étudiants de l'année dernière, qui est feu d'artifice, pour jouer sur les mots fleurs artificielles... j'aime bien! :D
Et à la fin, vous m'excuserez mais il faut quand même un petit paragraphe en anglais pour mes fidèles lecteurs qui comprennent pas le français...
To my loyal readers who don't understand French: this post is basically about what we did in our humanities class yesterday; we had to come up with a brand name for a company producing artificial flower arrangements.
One jam-packed week
I started reading a book on Sunday night, and I haven't been able to continue it since. That's how hectic the week has been. Of course, part of the reason I haven't been able to continue reading it is because of my own stupidity...I went to the préfecture today to get my visa and even though I knew there would be a long wait there, I totally forgot about bringing a book to read. In a way, maybe that shows how stressed out I am.
So what happened this week?
We have classes every day, of course. So that leaves the nights.
Monday night: ping pong club.
Tuesday night: it was supposed to be free, but I received 4 internship offers (from the same company) and replied to three of them, two of which were under the same person.
Wednesday night: it was supposed to be free as well, but at lunchtime I received an e-mail from Isitec asking me whether I had decided to do my internship there. Which led me to write this confus post (the word confus is in French, it's the most suitable word I can find at the moment). That totally stressed me out, and I was kinda glad to have badminton that day (sports class) so that I could get rid of some energy, and while warming up I whacked the shuttle just about as hard as I could...which actually helped, I think. ('cos later I was calmer, at least for a while) Then after class I went to talk to the Decathlon people who came to GE to present their company (I won't go into details about that, it's hardly interesting unless if you're my parents helping me worry about my internship)
That night GE held a GE night in a small bar less than 5 minutes away from my place (I can almost see it from my window). Initially I wasn't sure about going since the other 4th years didn't seem to be going, and I was in my room wondering what to do (I was too stressed out to study) when Thierry messaged me and told me that there were "people" there, so I decided to drop by...and there you go, another night has gone by. (not that I would have done anything else that night if I hadn't gone there...)
Here's a photo from Wednesday night, courtesy of Marion. You might notice that the photo of the year was taken the same night. ;)
Among the photos Marion sent me, not one has everyone's face on it clearly, this is the best one. Hopefully the others will send me some good ones!
Thursday: Thursday afternoons are free for us to do sport, and every Thursday in November I had a ping pong competition. Last week was an individual competition for the unranked players (non-classés), I won the girls' category (there were only three of us, all from INSA) so I was told that I could go this week to play with the ranked players. But knowing that their level is so much better than mine, I wasn't really looking forward to getting crushed like a fly, so when my prof didn't ask me to go, I was glad not to! And since the next day (Friday) we were to have a test on SED, I could then study for the test Thursday afternoon.
But that plan kinda hit a snag...when I got back home at noon, I switched on my phone and discovered that I had received a voice message from one of the guys I had wrote to on Tuesday about the internships. (let's call him Ed, just so I don't have to keep saying "that guy") Ed had tried to call me around 11am, but my phone was switched off. So he left me a message asking me to call him back.
I called him and ended up going for an interview that same day. It takes about an hour to arrive at the company, so that was the afternoon gone. You see, I had only looked at SED a little (a teeny-weeny bit, actually) over the weekend, knowing that I had Tuesday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday afternoon and night to look at it again! But it seems that it wasn't meant to be...so after getting back from the interview I forced myself onto my SED textbook (it isn't the most interesting thing...I know I said I liked SED, but only the problem-solving part, NOT the definitions! And there are a lot of definitions...) besides sending off e-mails to both Ed (to thank him for the interview) and the Isitec guy (I should find a name for him as well :P)
Friday: As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, I went to the préfecture to get my visa (titre de séjour, to be exact). I left at 10am after my humanités class and waited for two hours there. At least I could get back in time to have my lunch before going for the test at 2pm.
After the two-hour test we had an hour of tutorial for the same subject. It was pretty pointless because no one was feeling like doing any work. The teacher sensed it and let us start late and leave early :P
This weekend is the fête des lumières (light festival) in Lyon, so I shall probably go out tomorrow night. Which means I'd better get some stuff done before that...and before continuing to read that book!
If I had a pintu suka hati
...all my problems would be solved.
I would just accept that darn internship and get it over with. I wouldn't have to worry about taking up 3 hours of my day sitting in or waiting for the bus/train.
I wouldn't have to worry about tickets to M'sia being waaay too expensive.
I wouldn't have to worry about being stuck in Paris for a night because my flight reaches the airport too late to take the last train back to Lyon.
It all revolves around TRANSPORT.
Argh.
Someone give me a pintu suka hati, and I shall love you for the rest of my life.
Oh the stress.
And why am I writing this now? Because I just received an e-mail from the guy who interviewed me for the internship. He wanted a reply by mid-/the end of December, and now he's telling me that it's almost mid-December and asking me whether I have decided!
But it's only the 3rd!!
Okay, it is almost mid-December. Two weeks isn't that long. Which is why I was already stressing out even before receiving his e-mail. It just added to it.
But we just received some internship offers yesterday (finally something in Lyon!) and I just sent my CV there! I cannot give an answer now!
So how do I tell him that? -_-'
Of very tall guys
You see, there is this really tall guy who's got a room in my corridor. I've seen him several times.
And today when I reached downstairs in the lift, there was a very tall guy waiting to go up. Being short, in these cases I see the person waiting there, but I don't see his face (it's not at eye level, I'd have to really tilt my head!)
So this guy said bonjour to me, and I replied the same...and that was when I realised that it could be that guy from my floor! But then, I'm not sure, and I will never find out for sure...
Tall guys are so inconvenient.
(no offense to the tall guys reading this!)
Breaking news
For those of you who follow my minesweeper journey, I just got a 13 on intermediate, a valid one this time. The earlier one was on a 3bv less than 30, 22 I believe. This one was on a 32. The exaltation has worn off a little since I screamed it on Yahoo and Facebook, mainly because I have always considered my high score 13 anyway...though it wasn't that great not to be able to submit it for rankings, and now I can! :D
So there ya go, the sidebar's updated! ^_^
Bangau oh bangau
Last night I was listening to an episode of Penang Hokkien Podcast about kindergartens. They were talking about a song they sang in kindergarten, Bangau Oh Bangau. Here's a video they found on Youtube:
Besides, I learned something about BM contractions...I think everyone knows that tadika is a contraction for taman didikan kanak-kanak, but did you know that pawagam is also a contraction? I believe I've heard about it before, but I had completely forgotten...and in the episode they mentioned it, it's actually short for panggung wayang gambar! So how's that for your culture générale (general knowledge)? ;)
Two strangers and a neighbourhood map
Last night I had a rather lousy badminton session (I won't go into the details, suffice to say that I didn't really get to play properly) While walking back home, as I passed by the tram stop I saw two girls looking at the neighbourhood map there. No one ever looks at this map, so I knew that they had most probably just arrived by tram and didn't know which way to go. So somehow I got it into my head to go and ask them what place they were looking for. It turned out that they were looking for the Rotonde in INSA, and I was able to give them instructions how to get there (but then I'm pretty lousy at giving instructions when it's more than a few "go straight"s and turns, so I hope they found it all right!) Just after helping them out, I felt better...though only for a while before the memory of the lousy session came and drowned it away again...
Why am I writing this? I'm not really sure...I think that it's a little to remind me why I help people...why I go on doing so. To remind myself that it's worth it, 'cos, even if it's only for a while, it makes me feel good. Not worthless. Comme quoi je sers à quelque chose.
Also, I think that in a way, those girls there reminded me of myself sometimes, when I take public transportation to a new place, reach the stop and find myself at a loss as to which way to go. And it costs nothing to help.
Tic tac toe
Played tic tac toe in class today. Oh gosh, I haven't done that since...since... I don't know when. Thierry's fault :P
Goodness, this year's classes are such a bore...especially Telecoms! Really...it's horrible, I feel like I learn nothing in class. It's going in one ear and out the other, really. Even in ETEP (electrotechnics) most of the time it's really boring, though at least I manage to grab a few important points sometimes. (and mark them down before I forget them again)
It's awful...and we have so little tutorials, we don't even see how we use what we learned in lectures. (or maybe, more like what we didn't learn :P)
Oh yeah, the tic tac toe was in Telecoms. I think practically no one was listening.
In fact, I think that the only class which has managed to be interesting every time (or almost) is SED (discrete event systems), where we're doing Petri nets (heard of them?) Somehow they're like some kind of "toy" to me, so it's not too bad learning how to use them! :P
Then there is signal processing (TS) and computer studies by the same prof...they're pretty much okay, and the prof is pretty fun, interesting...the way he teaches, I mean (I just can't explain it properly) But there are still certain parts of the syllabus that are rather a bore.
The good class would be sport...where I'm doing badminton. It's cool 'cos we play mostly with people of our level, which I don't always get to do in the badminton club.
Really, 4th year is one packed (I will refrain from saying action-packed since it isn't really, it's packed but we mostly sit unmoving in the lecture hall! :P ) semester! Yes, semester. 'Cos in the second sem we will be off somewhere doing our internship.
Just read through what I wrote...and really, what am I doing in GE? (aka Génie Electrique aka Electrical Department) The elec part (main course) bores me and it's the side dishes that I like. lol (but maybe it's because we're not doing electronics this year?)
What is marketing?
Well, after that rant, why not share a joke? I just got this from Ying Sim, I've already seen it before but I still find it funny! And what's more, it teaches me about marketing... ;)
1. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say: ' I am very rich. Marry me! ' - That's Direct Marketing'
2. You're at a party with a bunch of friends and see a gorgeous girl. One of your friends goes up to her and pointing at you says: ' He's very rich. 'Marry him.' -That's Advertising'
3. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and get her telephone number. The next day, you call and say: ' Hi, I'm very rich. 'Marry me - That's Telemarketing'
4. You're at a party and see gorgeous girl. You get up and straighten your tie, you walk up to her and pour her a
drink, you open the door (of the car)for her, pick up her bag after she drops it, offer her ride and then say:'By the way, I'm rich. Will you 'Marry Me?' - That's Public Relations'
5. You're at a party and see gorgeous girl. She walks up to you and says:'You are very rich! 'Can you marry ! Me?' - That's Brand Recognition'
6. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say: 'I am very rich. Marry me!' She gives you a nice hard slap on your face. - ' That's Customer Feedback '
7. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say: 'I am very rich. Marry me!' And she introduces you to her husband. - 'That's demand and supply gap'
8. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and before you say anything, another person come and tell her: 'I'm rich. Will you marry me?' and she goes with him - 'That's competition eating into your market share'
9. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and before you say: 'I'm rich, Marry me!' your wife arrives. - ' That's restriction for entering new markets '
Ripped off
Note: this is a semi-rant. As in, it's not a rant where I yell and scream, but a rant nevertheless. Comprehensiveness not guaranteed.
I got ripped off by a salesman. That's the simple, straightforward way to say it. This guy came during my lunch break, and told me that he was here to see whether I could get a lower tariff for my electricity. At first I thought he was from EDF (the national electricity company which, it happens, has been privatized, hence this mess) but he was in fact from another electricity company (Direct Energie). He asked for my electricity bill, and I was like "okay, here you go". Then he checked and said that I could, and he offered me a tariff at 18€ a month, which was cheaper than what I was paying right now. So I said okay and signed, etc.
It's too complicated to explain, but the low-down is that he wasn't very honest about the whole thing (like several other salemen from the company, as I found out from my online searches) In fact he told me that I was going to pay less, because the tariff per kWh is lower. But what he didn't tell me was that the monthly subscription was higher. And looking at my old electricity bills (and checking the number of units I use over a year) I made a rough calculation (thank you Excel!) of my yearly payment with EDF and the payment with this new company, it turns out that I would save 3€ a year on electricity, but 15€ a year in subscription fees, so a net loss of 12€! (whatever, I should have done accounts, I know :P)
The problem with these salemen is that they don't give you time to think. Next time I'll know better, and not agree to a thing, just ask him to leave me the documents so that I can read them slowly at my leisure. (and do more internet searches for information)
So after signing the contract, I didn't have much time to read the contract or anything (yeah, I know, we shouldn't sign before reading) so I only had time to look at it tonight. So I searched online and found a whole lot of bad reviews about this company. (there were a few good ones, however) After going through that, I was half-thinking of giving this company a chance, but then I checked the tariffs and that argument just went bust. The good thing is that in France, when you sign a contract, you have 7 days in which you can change your mind. (at least I believe it's for all contracts) So I believe that in one or two days I will send the cancellation form back to them... the downside is that it needs to be sent in registered mail, and that costs money. So I guess I shall be paying for my carelessness...
The thing is that at first he presented himself like he was from EDF, or someone working with EDF, whereas they are actually business rivals! In the information he gave, it was like it was just another type of subscription, a new one where you pay less. Oh well, it's difficult to explain. End of rant.
Edit:
Oh yeah, I'm not saying that this company is all bad, I saw more bad reviews than good on the internet, and a lot of complaints about the low-handed ways their salesmen (or women) work to get you to sign their contract. But hey, if you use a lot of electricity you might find that you save money with them...
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that he took my latest electricity bill as well. He said it would be returned. Whatever...at least I noted down the amount already.
(seems that it wasn't the end...well, never say never! :P)
2nd edit:
More.
You see, that guy was a sweet-talker. He was made for that job. He didn't stop chatting away as he filled in that contract for me, asking me about what I was doing in France, how long I'd been there, etc. That's actually one thing I don't like... It's like the guy at my bank. When we meet he will ask me how I am, how are my studies...and I'm like "hey, is this any of your business anyway?" But it'd be impolite to refuse to answer, so usually I would answer as shortly as I can. I mean, argh, can't they just do their jobs and leave the "friendly chat" to my friends?!
Tribute to my classmates
An insignificant decision
made without much thought
"What will it change anyway?"
"Hardly anything."
But what did turn out
was changed beyond expectation
There is no doubt
that what was
and what could have been
could never have been more different.
What would I have missed?
This
But what have I missed?
The unknown.
Never shall we know
for it is impossible to guess
what could have come to pass
what was left behind
when we took one path
and turned away from the other.
However
when all is said and done
regret we shall not
for there are many roads to happiness
Passing by different scenery
the destination can be reached
Either way
we will have chosen.
Je vous adore mes amis
Sans cet aiguillage
purement de choix
sans nécessité
Jamais, peut-être
se serait-on adressé la parole
Jamais, peut-être
se serait-on connu
C'est grâce à la chance
que je suis là.
