Torn and Turned by Julie Kenner
Torn: Blood Lily Chronicles Book 2 by Julie Kenner

My thoughts: (WWW: Why did I choose it, What did I like about it, What I didn't like about it)
I chose Torn because I had just finished Tainted which ends as a cliffhanger and absolutely demands that you keep reading.
What I liked about it: I fell in love with the characters, despite their flaws. By this book I was fully invested in them and couldn't wait to find out more. Julie Kenner builds great characters who each battle demons from within and without during the story. Each of the main players in the story have strong convictions, and they all appear to be fighting for the same conclusion, just not all for the same reasons.
My favorite character: Deacon
I also love the plot. It twists and turns, keeping you on your toes as to who is fighting for and who is fighting against the Light (one of my favorite things about the book is that so many times it seems that the characters are changing sides - or at least thinking about it).
I like how each of the books is connected together. The storyline is woven throughout the books and revisited when needed. The intro to each book is great.

What I didn't like about it: The ending! Okay, it's not that the ending was bad, just a cliffhanger!!! Every now and again I got tired of the "Everything for Rose" aspect of Lily, but I have sisters so I can understand. There were times when a little more clarity would have been nice, but not necessary to the story.
It is an all-around good read.
I would readily recommend it to either gender - - grade 9 and up.

My Thoughts:
Once again, I chose this book simply because I couldn't stand for the story to be over (and now I am sad to say as yet there is no book 4).
What I liked about it: My favorite thing about this book is that I get the answers to all the questions I have been sitting on for the last two books. In this book Lily is forced to look inside herself and search for the kind of person she wants to be. The stakes are huge - the world/armageddon - sacrifice herself, rule the demon hoards, or find the key and use it. Each of the characters faces their own soul search and we the readers are brought along on their journey as the story continues. My favorite character is still Deacon, has been since book one. His connection with Lily, their struggle to believe in themselves and each other, and the paths they take make for an interesting twist in the story. Without this piece I think the story would feel incomplete. The connections between the characters and the ways that they grow and change are the keys to the storyline and the plot.
I like that the storyline is kept intact in this book as well, the intro makes sure you know what's been going on and you are reminded throughout the story about how things are connected, and then they are wrapped up in this book.
My other favorite things: I cannot share without having this be a spoiler - so you'll have to read them for yourself! I suggest you do.
What I didn't like: Once again - the only thing I didn't like about the book was the ending. This one doesn't end on cliffhanger - demanding the next piece of the story, but it ends in such a way that there is room for more later. I don't think there will be a book four - hopefully I am wrong.
An all-around good read. I read this in one day, so it is a fast read.
This book, like the two before it, is a grab you,
keep you read that you just don't want to put down.
I readily recommend all three of Julie Kenner's Blood Lily Chronicles!

I had to add one more post about what books I got in my mailbox - because....okay you guessed it from the post title ----- Morpheus Road: The Light by D.J. MacHale arrived today while I was at work! I am so thrilled! The only downer is that I have so many books already demanding to be read that I will not be able to start this one until June. I have three Galley books to read and review, two Early Reviewers books waiting for reading and reviewing, and my 500 page challenge book (The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan) to finish - this one before June 1. I also won a copy of Addiction that I have promised the author, Sandra Marshall, I would read and review.

I went to Uncle Hugo's Bookstore in the Twin Cities with my friend Kathy on Saturday and we had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Robin Hobb! I am a new fan and so only had three of her books in my library before the signing...now I have 8! I also found an author who I have not read so I thought I would try them out as well.

Tainted: Blood Lily Chronicles Book 1 by Julie Kenner
Lily Carlyle has lied, cheated, and stolen her way through life.

When her little sister is brutalized, a vengeful Lily determines to exact her own justice. She succeeds at the cost of her own life, but as she lies dying, she is given a second chance. Lily can earn her way into Paradise by becoming an assassin for the forces of good. It's the job Lily believes she can really get into-but she doesn't realize that she may not be able to get out.
First - before I tell you my thoughts about the story:
I have to admit that I have started choosing my reads a bit differently than in the past - challenges, it's suddenly all about the challenges. I have commited to so many challenges, thinking that it wouldn't be that hard because I truly love to read - but find I haven't enough time to read everything, so I now choose by challenges. So on that note, I am currently working my way through the Read Your Name Challenge which you can find here and read Tainted because it was one of the T's for my challenge. WOW am I glad that I needed a T!
So - - The story begins with this line, "Can I just say that dying sucks?"
I was already hooked on the first page. This story is filled with action, demons, the fight against good and evil, the ordeal of deciding who and what is good and/or evil, and one girl's struggle to save the world. I love strong and independent women battling for the good of mankind, so this story is right up my alley. I have always been a take-charge kind of person and I found it easy to connect with Lily/Alice. Deacon being the incredible man that the author portrays him to be would make any woman with a pulse short of breath.
All-in-all this was a great story! No spoiler, but it's a cliffhanger! I read it on the Kindle and went to Amazon and ordered all three of these books in paperback before I started this review. (Luckily, all three are on the Kindle too - so I am planning to veer off the challenge path to finish this series right away, thank goodness for the Kindle or I would be in the car instead of on my computer because I have to know what happens next!

My thoughts:
I had high hopes when I picked up this book - from the cover alone it demanded to be read. I must say I was not disappointed!
This was a great read. The characters are well developed, the plot was intriguing. The reality of the idea of being heartless was one I haven't seen and the author wields it well.
This is a story of loyalty, fealty, faith, corruption, honor, love, family, and mystery. A story of young people becoming who they want to be and the choices they have to make to get there.
The characters come from all walks and worlds. The author mingles worlds and dimensions without leaving the reader lost.
The story is filled with action; so even though it is essentially a love story, it is not JUST a love story. We have battles of all kinds - physical and emotional.
The relationships in this story are extraordinary. You are drawn into each of them as they unfold between all of the characters throughout the story. You watch as Felix goes from being a young and foolish boy to a man (who has not gotten older, but had to make adult decisions). You are witness to Una and the fate that befalls her and those around her because of the choices that she makes.
As in all stories - there is a villain. The shape changing bad guy here makes you dislike him from the start (which is what we all want to do). There are also elusive game players in the story that we aren't outright introduced to that appear to have the fate, or at least some of the fate, of the characters held at the mercy of the roll of the dice.
I fell in love with the characters and can't wait for the rest of the series.

It's Monday!!! In my mailbox - - what am I reading?

The in my mailbox part of today is crazy for me this week! I just got somewhere around 100 books. Granted 60 of these were amazing garage sale finds - some of which will be finding themselves in the hands of the reading club students, some will go to the elementary school media center, and of course some will be staying with me and my family. Then we had the bookfair at our school, and I run the bookfair - so I had to support it and buy many books - and it was a buy one/get one fair! So....I am not listing them all here because the post would be terribly long - if you would like to see which books I got please check out my library at librarything.com.

My Reading Habits!

Here I go...everything you ever wanted to know about my reading habits...
Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack: I do snack when I read - not religiously or anything, but I do like to nibble while I read!
What is your favorite drink while reading? I wish I was able to say Sobe Adrenaline Rush - - - but of course I cannot, because they stopped making it: and thus crushed me, but I am attempting to carry on by substituting Red Bull - - alas...it is SOOOOO NOT the same, but I drink it anyway.
Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you? I am a notorious for writing in books - as long as they are my own. I always have a book in my bag but not a notebook, so I write random information in books: notes about other book recommendations, lists of things I just remembered, whatever I need to remember.
How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open? I am a constant bookmarker. I will use just about anything handy to mark my place. I am a bartender on weekends and regularly mark my page with sip sticks (those short skinny straws) - but more often than not if you look at my current read you will find my place marked with a dollar bill. I would never dog-ear the page!!! A friend of mine likes to drop random dog-ear comments just to see if it always makes me crazy - - and it does! Shame - take better care of the book the author spent so much time writing and you are spending so much time reading! I have left a book laying flat ope, but it is the exception rather than the rule for me.
Fiction, nonfiction, or both? I will read non-fiction, if I have to. Or...if my sister gives me the book. Otherwise - - I am a fiction reader through and through. I am a single mom with 2 jobs, 2 children, 1 boyfriend (who also has a child), 4 dogs, 5 cats, 1 rabbit, and 1 horse - - - - I get enough reality.
Are you a person who tends to read to the end of a chapter, or can you stop anywhere? I try to get to the end of a chapter before I quit reading, but I read while I work (bartending) so I have learned to stop mid-sentence when I have to, but do then end up re-reading and stopping at the end of the page as soon as I get a chance.
Are you the type of person to throw a book across the room or on the floor if the author irritates you? I am not a book thrower - I do leave them in piles around my home, but only until I get them read or put into a different stack.
If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop and look it up right away? Not unless I can't figure it out by context clues or at least get the gist from the scene.

Are you the type of person that reads one book at a time, or can you read more than one? I usually have more than one book going at the same time, I start them on different days, but I seem to finish the one I like the best first.
Do you have a favorite time/place to read? Anywhere and everywhere - any time I have a minute. I steal a lot of my reading time from the night; I don't seem to need as much sleep as others do. I spend a fair amount of time reading in the bar (on break, before, or after my shifts) and am amazed that so many people find it strange. I can read in a packed bar with a band playing, but I can't read while I listen to my ipod with my earbuds in - doesn't make much sense does it.
Do you prefer series books or stand alones? I read both, but truly love series because I never seem to want the story to end.
Is there a specific book or author you find yourself recommending over and over? I think that child should read Stand Tall Mary Lou Melon, every early reader should read Igraine the Brave, every middle schooler should read Lloyd Alexander, and every high schooler should read Chris Crutcher (Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes).
How do you organize your books?(by genre, title, author’s last name, etc? I keep most of my books in alphabetical order, by author last name. I have a bookcase in my living room that simply holds the newest in the collection; these are not alphabetized, but they are sorted by series and author. The majority of my books are currently in boxes (currently meaning the last 2 years or so). These boxes are alphabetized: a box, b box, and so on. One day I will be finished with the room in my house that is to be my library and they will all come out of the boxes and be shelved alphabetically by author last name. (hopefully this day will occur in my lifetime!)

I loved the twist and intrigue. I wasn't sure at first if I liked the characters, but they were drawing emotion from me regardless of my opinion of them. My favorite part of this story? The fact that I was totally surprised by the twists! I am very rarely completely shocked when a story twists, but this one was totally unexpected. Great read!
The only thing I didn't like about the story was that I found myself wanting to shake the mom. Serioiusly? What was she thinking sometimes! I can't tell you the story, without telling you the story - - so you will HAVE to read this!!!
What do you plan to read next?
Heaven help me - I am planning to read a "real" book and an "e-book" - we will see how it plays out for me. I have yet to finish and Falling, fly and I must read Changeless before I have to re-read Soulless to remember all the details. If I am to get any of my challenges done I have to start taking turns I guess. Wish me luck!
