Living with Covid-19 as endemic

Covid-19 had been with us since it landed itself on the shores of Singapore in early 2020. As I have several medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, eczema, psoriasis, psoriasis arthritis and sinus, I had been extra careful to avoid crowded areas and people. Thankfully, I managed to get my vaccination completed in July 2021 and my booster shot in Jan 2022. The most unfortunate case of 2022 is that I was tested positive on 12 Feb 2022.  The irony is that I still feel blessed and protected by God. I could have gotten it in early 2020, or even 2021 before I could've gotten my shots. I only caught it one month after my booster was done. The feeling wasn't great but it wasn't morbid either. It was like a very bad case of flu for me and I am still surviving well with just a tad of disturbed sleep.  This made me realise the importance of the vaccine and boosters and appreciated them more. However, I appreciated God even more in times as such. My we...

It's been 2 months since my last update...

I did not let loose of my intermittent fasting regime nor gave up my exercises. Though I did become lazier for my weight training cause of my recent busy schedule and stopped exercises for 2 weeks in between cause I had both my Covid vaccine shots on 29 Jun and 31 Jul.  I'm now at 70kg and 36.8% fat percentage. Most of the key indicators have seen improvements. Most importantly, my insulin has dropped to 8 units per day and my blood glucose readings are pretty decent.  Hopefully, in 2.5 months' time, I can reach my ideal weight of 60kg. Fighting!

Truly, you cannot out-train a bad diet

On 30 May, I reached 77.6kg which I had fulfilled the target of my cheat meal allowance.  I decided to have one cheat meal during lunch on 31 May. I ordered my favourite fried economic bee hoon with fried tofu and "zhai er" (a fried bean curd sheet). To make sure I was having enough protein and other nutrients, I added unsweetened soy milk and 150g of kimchi to the meal. I was extra careful not to select the processed foods which I had loved.  In the end, I did not finish the pack of bee hoon. I recall that I had about one-third left that was untouched. My fasting blood glucose that morning was 5.3. I broke fast that day at 2.15pm, and my post-meal blood glucose taken at 4.13pm was 11.2.  This was the highest reading I had since mid-April when I first got my glucose meter.  After exercising and weights training, it came down to 6.9 pre-dinner, and eventually with a controlled diet for dinner, the post-dinner reading was 5.6. So on the blood glucose control, it was ba...

Reversing Insulin Resistance Day 58

Today is the big reveal.  I just had my medical review with my endocrinologist at 2.40pm. My HbA1c went from 9.7 in Jan 2021 to 5.7 on 25 May 2021. The test results for my renal and lipid panels were all within the healthy range. The glucose serum found in my renal panel was 5.5 mmodl/L which is also good. This concludes that a shift in diet and incorporating exercise is very powerful in controlling our blood sugars and maintaining a healthy body. I couldn't thank Dr Eric Berg from the US and  宋晏仁醫師 from Taiwan more for their sharing on YouTube on diet and diabetic control. The insight that they shared on insulin resistance had helped me greatly in this recovery journey. As of today, my insulin jab has reduced to 20 units for mornings, and 10 units for evenings. This was from 40 units in the mornings and 35 in the evenings from Jan 2021. I will continue on in my journey of intermittent fasting, healthy eating and exercise to keep my health in check.  Thank God for...

Reversing Insulin Resistance Day 55

Image
Today is 22 May 2021. After 55 days of intermittent fasting, my insulin has been adjusted to 22 units in the morning, and 11 to 12 units in the evening to keep my blood glucose around 5 to 6 mmol/l pre- and post-meals.  My weight is now 78.75kg with a 39.7% body fat percentage and 44.67kg of muscles. I'm seeing my endocrinologist on 25 May. Hopefully, we can work out a new insulin type and units to help with the hypoglycemia situations.

Reversing Insulin Resistance Day 46

My bodyweight as of today is 79.85kg. Body Fat Percentage is at 40.4%.  Though I had been losing weight quite well throughout these 46 days and blood sugar control had been very on point, the body fat percentage had very slow progress.  So I might be planning a different exercise regime to focus on more weight training to maintain or increase my muscles and lose more fat. Just waiting for my yoga mat to arrive :)

As of today...

I officially shed every single kilogram I gained last year. Finally, I am onwards to a new chapter of health and fitness in my life. ☺
