Second story

The second story is up and being built!

Front door, in the middle there. Left two windows are the school room and right two are the office.

SO fast!

This is looking into the school room. The front door is to the left on the screen.

The office.

This is looking back toward the front door. That beam will be the beginning of the stairway.

SO much happening each day! Right now, they have wall framing on the second floor being built. By the end of the week, they will almost be ready for trusses and roofing!

Five Years Old

This precious, God-given blessing is now five. He is a sweet, funny and precocious little man whom we all adore! He is also very talented as he blew out 3 of his birthday candles on the inhale!

Off to the races

We returned this weekend from an amazing family trip to Rancho Mirage with my side of the family. My parents take us all on vacation each year to reconnect and enjoy family time. It was so much fun just laying by the pool, talking and watching the cousins bond. Canaan learned how to officially swim and we are now a swimming family after 12 years of always having someone in floaties.

While we were gone the footings to the add-on were dug and built up. It was pretty crazy to come home and see the change. Its almost unreal for me to believe its actually happening! Yesterday we were woken up at 7 am by trucks pulling in the driveway to put the finishing touches on things before the inspector came and, this morning, it was 6 AM! It's going to be a LONG 6-9 months of early mornings and it means I can't stay in my pajamas all day, BUT, it also means that we will have a big house around Christmas and I think I'm OK with the early mornings with that as a reward.

The cement trucks rolled in right as the sun was coming up on this gorgeous morning and the kids were eagerly standing by watching. Only Alana and Isaiah remember this from our last build and I think Justus could sit ALL day long watching and asking questions about everything. He soaks up the education like none of the other kids do. I love that he loves to learn.

Sarah was fortunate enough to spend this week with my parents so that she could attend her friends 16th birthday party down south. I love that she has the opportunity to be away(at the beach, no less) but we sure do miss her when she's gone! She finished her 10th grade year in February and started her 11th grade year a month ago so she deserves to have a little more time off.

We are so very busy around here with animals, 4H stuff with fair next week, building and trying to finish up school and prepare for next year. We won't be done with school anytime soon but there is always so much to do when it comes to the kids' education.

I will be posting on my blog at least once a week with building pictures and updates so check back if you want to see the house go up!

This boy will turn 5 this week. I can't even believe that statement.

Bone Broth! Why it's so good for you and how I make it

Bone Broth, its what's good for you! Seriously, this stuff is amazing in so many ways. I'm not talking about that sodium laden "broth" you get from the grocery store in a can or box, I'm talking about the stuff of cold-remedy-chicken-noodle-soup legend. The stuff that is, gasp, homemade in your own kitchen and ladled hot and steaming into bowls held by eager, little children. It's the stuff that helps heal your gut, promotes healthy digestion, inhibits infection, reduces inflammation and fights it too. It promotes strong and healthy bones, hair and nails and can restore to your body much needed minerals. This is GOOD stuff.

I learned about bone broth and its benefits about 2 years ago and started making it regularly, shortly after. Once we began the GAPS diet, this past February, it was nice to have one small piece of the pie already figured out. Bone broth is a necessary part of eating the GAPS way to help heal our guts(which, they say, leaky gut is the reason so many have multiple health issues). Drink broth we did!

Many people think bone broth is difficult to make but it is SO very easy and I encourage you to try it! Here is how I make it.

What you need:

-Bones- Beef bones(3-4 bones), a chicken carcass, fish bones(although the thought of that grosses me out!) Any of these are fine. I use only homegrown bones but if you need to buy them from the store, try to find an organic source as all the goodness(and yuckiness) is leached from the bones. This also goes for the rest of the items in this recipe.

-Chicken Feet(optional)1-2- even though this is optional, chicken feet add an amazing amount of gelatin which is what helps to seal your gut and help with healthy skin, nails, hair and more.

2 carrots, washed
1 onion, washed
2 ribs celery, washed
3 cloves garlic
1 tsp. whole peppercorns
3 tbls. raw apple cider vinegar
2 tbls. salt(pink is best) Do NOT use table salt.

How to make it:

-Get a really big pot, especially if you're a family of 9(or more). I suppose you can use a smaller pot but why would you do that and miss out on as much goodness as you can create?

-Put all the ingredients into the pot just as they are. There is no need, if you are using organic ingredients, to shred or cut them at all. Leave the onion and garlic skin on! This makes it quick!

-Fill the pot to the top with cold filtered water and set your timer for an hour. Giving the vinegar the time to sit with the bones will help get all those amazing minerals ready to come out.

-After the timer beeps, turn the heat all the way to high and leave until the water begins to boil. Turn it down to a simmer.

-Leave the broth simmering for, at least, 12 hours(they say 24 is best but, who has time for that?). After the 12 hours is up, strain the broth off to drink or make soup.

-Now, here's the best part! You can make another batch right away! If you only strain off 1/2 of the liquid you can refill with water, add more salt(this is GOOD for you), set it to boil and let it simmer away for overnight. I actually do this 4 times(or so). The broth in the picture above is actually from a batch that started 3 days ago. This is a real cost savings for something so nutritious for you. If you throw the bones out after the first batch you are wasting money. Shame, shame!

A few alternate options:
-Make it in your crockpot instead! The batches I have to make are too big but I would do it in my crock if I could.
- Some people like to roast the bones before putting in the water as they say it makes it more robust but, again, who has time for that?

So, that's how I make my bone broth. If you make your own, I'd love to hear how you make it too!

This last year

In the last year there has been a lot that has happened! We've had children turn 15, 12, 11, 10, 9, 7 and 4 years old. How is it they grow up so fast!?

We've had to deal with the terror that is student driving and permits. Oh my! I do not know how I am going to deal with this 6 more times! Luckily, Sarah is very responsible and has a healthy dose of fear about driving. There are a few other children that will not be quite as slow and calm, I'm sure!

We have sold off all our cows but one Mama and 2 calves and have stopped milking until next year. Its been such a nice break! The reason we stopped milking is because we have started the GAPS diet as a family(minus Jonah). In my attempt to help a few of my children with health issues(asthma, allergies, bedwetting, anxiety) we went hard core and cut out all grains, beans, starches and dairy to help heal our guts. We have seen some improvements in different areas for different kids(and me, I've lost 22 pounds(gasp!) and have energy I've haven't had since high school) but, since it's a long term way of eating(2 years), we are still in the process. I also started using essential oils to help move us away from the drug store junk and have found some amazing oils that help with many things. I love them so much, that I became a Young Living distributor so that I can get a wholesale discount and utilize their loyalty program. :)

Over a year ago we sought the help of an amazing therapist for one of our children because of some serious issues. We were so blessed to find someone close by who was a Christian and specialized in adoptive families. This led to a RAD(Reactive Attachment Disorder) and anxiety diagnosis. Things had always been hard with this certain child but it got progressively worse over 2012/2013 until every single day was hell and our family was floundering. We are SO very thankful for the help and healing that occurred over the time we spent in therapy. The weekly, agonizing sessions were well worth the time and money! This child is healing and moving forward and their future(and our family's) is looking brighter!

Because of the above said challenge, I TRULY believe God placed us in this tiny home to 1)allow me to be present all the time. There is no place to hide with 9 people in a 1,200 sq. ft. home and my children needed me there at all times to see and hear all and 2) keep the prospect of adding another blessing to our family unavailable for that time. I needed to be focused on the problem at hand and not focused on a wee, precious babe. Not only did the child need me 24/7, my other children were dealing with trauma issues because of what was going on every second in our home. God is so miraculous the way He protects us sometimes, isn't He?

As things got better(which they are not perfect but there is not constant strife and rage, thank God!) we decided to move forward on our goal, 5 years ago, to add on to this house. So, we submitted plans to the county and, within a month from now, should be breaking ground to add on another 2,600 sq. ft. I'm excited to share the process with you all!

Observations

As I am packing to leave this beautiful island of Hawaii that I've called home for a month, I am reflecting on some things that I've observed. A list in no particular order:

- I've never seen so many butt cheeks and butt cracks. Vulgar? I'm sorry. Locals seem to think that bikinis with as little as possible in the back are acceptable. Sadly, I think it's the same in California but I don't spend enough time on their beaches to have noticed. Ladies, there is beauty in leaving a small amount for your husbands eyes only. Tankinis are comfy AND cute!
- Tatoos are all the rage. If you meet a Hawaiian, they will likely have a tattoo. Not just a small one but across their back or down their arm or leg or across their chest. Women and men alike are tatted up.
- Hawaiians know how to relax and party like no other place I've seen. It seems all Hawaiians have a "weekend" setup. Pop-up, BBQ, ice chests, boom box, check, check, check. They use them too and have some real fun.
- I could move here and settle into life very, very easily.
- Our district of Puna is full of a bunch of seriously crazy Hippies who need Jesus so badly it hurts my heart. I can feel their oppression amongst their happy faces and (really) smelly bodies.
- Being together as a family of 9, 24/7, for 30 days has been surprisingly good and easy. We had some great conversation, great discipline opportunities and it was SO very nice to not be a single mom at all for 30 straight days. Refreshing having my man beside me to help.
- Having sunshine and vitamin D makes me a happy person!

Some thoughts after 2 days home in California
- It's so good to be home with all of the things I'm used to to take care of my large family.
- I miss Hawaii already.
- it's nice to hear my child that frequently says they 'don't want to be a part of our family' and 'hate this house' and 'wish they could just run away' say " It feels SO good to be HOME." Yes, I made it a point to let them know that was nice to hear after always hearing the negative!
- Jonah went immediately back to work and it's been hard missing him for me and the kids. Spending 30 straight days together was a delight for us all when we were used to him being gone often.
- Because we took off 5 weeks of school(1 to prepare and 4 to vaca) I realized we have a long way to go to finish this school year.
- getting back into the normal homeschool routine stinks!
- The morning we arrived home was the exact moment Justus started having asthma issues that have been gone for a month. Thank goodness for our essential oils, they were able to stop an attack right as it was beginning.

And, my goal for this week is to figure out how to be able to download pictures so I can post them here! I have so many to share!

Hawaiian dreams

First off, I cannot figure out how to post new pictures on blogger with my iPad, so I'm sorry this won't be accompanied by photos.

I am posting from the Big Island of Hawaii right now as we live the dream we've had for 8 years to bring our whole family to our Hawaii house for a vacation. It's taken us that long to make it work, save the money, organize cows births/milking/calves, find someone to take care of the farm, etc. Our trip will be 30 days long by the time we reach home and I can't believe how very blessed we have been to have the opportunity with our kids.

This year is set up to be one of our craziest and busiest, for many reasons, and having this time together to explore and find adventure every day has been precious! We have swam and swam (and swam some more), hiked into a volcano, seen lava bubbling and spurting, gone to fun cultural festivals, jumped cliffs at the very bottom of the U.S., eaten good food, tried new foods and SO much more!

I look forward to sharing some pictures once we return home and I can download them with my laptop. Stay tuned!

Back to the normally scheduled program

Do you all remember this picture? Look at how small they were! This is about to happen again.

I have so much to tell you after a full 2 year break but I'll give you an overview so that you have something to look forward to. A lot has happened, a lot has changed, we have grown and hurt and learned as a family and I finally feel the courage and strength to get things back to "normal".

We have spent the last 2 years dealing with, what can only be equated to, a living hell in the form of RAD(Reactive Attachment Disorder). Sounds harsh? You have NO idea. It was a long time coming(3 years?) before we realized what the problem was and , by Gods grace, we are overcoming!  I will be sharing more on this and what has helped this child begin healing. Things are, by no means, perfect but they are getting better.

We are about to add on to our little 1,200 sq. ft. house because 1) Canaan and Justus won't be able to share a bed when they're teenagers ;) and 2) we feel the call to make ourselves available for more orphan/Safe Families/adoption/moms in crisis ministries. Gods timing is perfect and I truly believe God allowed us our time in our little house to be longer than planned because he knew the challenge we had in store of working through a RAD diagnosis.

Almost a year ago our family, out of desperation, sought to learn more about essential oils and see if it could help me(and the RADish) with anxiety and get Justus off his arsenal of meds for asthma and allergies. Those that know me well know that I am a researcher in all parts of my life. The results I found led me to become a Young Living distributor and I LOVE my oils and the results I have seen from them. We use them for much more on a daily basis and they are an intregal part of the way we live.

Our little farm, during all the chaos, was seriously downsized to a much more manageable size. We now have 3 cows(instead of 11!), 5 sheep, 4 turkeys, 2 piggies, lots of chickens and 3 Muscovy ducks. Last year we enrolled our kids in 4H and they showed in poultry last year. Isaiah's chicken, Lola, won Reserve Best in Show! We are all excited to see what this year brings.

The last thing, although I'm sure I'm missing something, is that we have been doing the GAPS diet as a family to try and heal Justus' gut. I have, in my research, learned that many of the issues we have, can be helped or cured by healing our guts flora. We have seen some results but have a ways to go(another year or so).

I'm excited to start writing again and sharing what's on my mind. I think Jonah will be happy because I can get out all my "talking" needs again by writing! Hahahaha!
