Christmas Woe's from a 6 year old girl

Alana is my dramatic, emotional, strong-willed girl. She is all heat and spunk and personality with an attitude to match. People love her immediately and remember her well. She has the most vivid imagination of any child I've ever met and it gets her into trouble often. All that said, as a parent, Alana is one difficult little girl to discipline and teach but she is also one of the most rewarding.

This Christmas we went to spend it with my parents. You must know, before we begin this little story, that we tell our children the truth about Santa Claus. Every year, Alana is the one child who wants SO badly to believe in Santa no matter what we tell her.

So, it's Christmas Eve and my Dad is tucking her in for the night. This is the conversation that follows...

Alana: Grumpy, are you sure Santa isn't real?

Grumpy: Yes, Alana.

Alana: Well, if he was real, I wouldn't be getting any presents from him anyways.

Grumpy: Why's that?

Alana: Because I have been really, really naughty this year.

Grumpy: You have? How?

Alana: I have been disobedient A. LOT.

We all got a good chuckle over that little conversation. My sweet Alana... gotta love that little girl!

Home, broken computers and lots of new toys

Yes, we are home from Christmas with my parents. It was a super quick trip because Jonah had to go back to work today but it was lots of fun.

And, yes, my computer is broken yet again. Seriously broken again with no way to fix it without taking it to a professional to fix. I am just hoping a) they can retrieve my pictures and files and b) it doesn't cost more than my computer is worth.

After purging out the toy area about 6 months ago I am going to be hard pressed to find room for all these new toys. The funny thing is that each of them only got one toy from my parents and one from my grandparents because we all went in to buy the kids a seriously cool gift that Jonah and I can't wait to try out but there is still a TON of stuff! I think maybe it's just because there are 6 of them?

I am so sorry that I haven't been able to keep you all up-to-date with the house comings but take my word for it, it is amazing!

From the Winger Team to yours, we hope you all had a fabulous Christmas!

One of my blog followers, Faith asked some really good questions. Here is her comment on my previous post.

Well, for someone that wasn't home schooled, I always wonder how people do the whole morning thing. Do you have an official start time? Do you require the kids to be up and dressed before breakfast or do you school in pj's? Do you have a set lunch time for every day or do you eat when everyone seems finished. I grew up with school bells that dictated my day and it makes me curious about how people school without them.
That makes me think of another question. I'm sure you addressed it at some point in time. Were you or Jonah home schooled? If not, how did you decide to home school?
Again, just being curious.

At the beginning of the year I am motivated with a schedule and time restraints. By about October all of those go out the window and we just do what I want! hahaha. I would "like" to start school by 8 but sometimes there are still a few kids asleep at 7:45 and I won't wake them up to start(that's part of the beauty of home schooling). This rule will probably change as we have young adults in the house who want to sleep in until 10 though. We do have morning chores that need to be done before we start school and we eat breakfast too(sometimes I choose to read our Bible passage during breakfast if we are running late).

The choice for PJ's or clothes is up to each child. I have found that their performance doesn't change with the clothes they are wearing and so I am pretty laid back about that;) Not to mention that I hate wearing "outside" clothes when I am in my house and so I usually have something "comfy" on. If I do tell them to get dressed their first question is, "Where are we going Mommy?" :)Lunch in our house is almost always about 11:30-12. That is pretty consistent, along with snack at 10:30. My kids are ravenous eaters and are almost always hungry!

And for the last question... Jonah and I were not home schooled growing up. When Jonah was a Junior he chose to do independent study because he was really sick of the whole "high school scene". I had never wanted to home school thinking home schooled kids were weird and socially inept. I don't know why I thought this as I had a few Hs'ed friend growing up and they were all normal! When I was in my master's program for Education I chose to do my thesis on "Public school vs. home schooling: Which is the better choice?" I was astounded by what I learned and it totally changed my ideas on home schooling my kids. When I met Jonah and he expressed his interest in home schooling our children we knew that's what we would do.

As we started out our journey of home schooling we weren't sure how long we would school at home. I chose to take it year by year and see how I felt. After 2 years, Jonah and I decided that this was the way we would school our kids for the long haul. We LOVE home schooling and the things it allows us to do with our children. Because of Jonah's work schedule, our kids would barely see their daddy if they went to public school. It allows us a ton of freedom to go and do things that we wouldn't be able to do if our kids were in a public school. Home schooling is the right choice for our family and we are very happy with it!

Homeschooling multiple grades

That island in the center of the room is where we will be doing our "schooling" for a long time to come. :)

Someone on the Skribit asked me how I go about schooling multiple grades. It's not as hard as you would think because much of it we all do together. We use My Father's World and are in the 2nd year this year. It is a 5 year cycle that begins by learning about other cultures and then starts at the beginning(of the world) the following year. So, this year we are learning about Creation(using the Bible) all the way to the Greeks. Next year we will be learning about Rome to the Reformation. I love that the curriculum is chronological and completely Bible based.

Now, technically, the little one's aren't old enough for this "cycle" yet but they are having fun learning along with Sarah and it makes it MUCH easier for me. When I am doing Bible, History and Science, the triplets sit in on the lesson or reading right along with Sarah and are expected to tell me at least one piece of information that they learned. They are also expected to learn the Bible verse each week.

How we do things differs a little bit each day but this is a loose schedule of how it's done.

- Bible time- we read our Bible passage, review all of our verses along with the newest one and then read whatever "other" book too. We have a great book that goes with the curriculum that tells what things were like during the time in history we are studying about(right now we just began learning about Moses). The kids love it. It is called, "The Victor Journey Through the Bible".

- Next all of the kids are sent to do "table time". From here Sarah pretty much takes off on her own to do her penmanship, math, grammar, art and free reading.

The little kids start their daily penmanship and phonics and I pull each of them separately to do our reading practice.

When they are done, they can go and play with Judah and Justus on the train track, Lego's or Lincoln logs.

Alana has additional reading that she has to do on her own from a reader.

- When they are done with all that I will sit down and do their math together. Malakai does a different math workbook because he is not quite to the level that Isaiah and Alana are and was getting really frustrated. So, now he does really easy math that he is successful with and more in line with what a kindergartner does.

-During math time, I usually put on the Leap Frog Letter Factory video for Judah and Justus. If you have little one's, this is the easiest and fastest way I have ever seen for them to learn their letter sounds. Alana knew hers at 16 months old, seriously.

- The triplets will then have a play break and I will do spelling with Sarah and anything else that she needs help with.

- Once all seat work is done we again gather on the floor or couch and do the rest of the reading that needs to be done that day. This would be for history or science and is usually just a page or 2 of what we have been learning.

- The last thing we do is read-aloud. This can be done at anytime during the day and I never do it at the same time.

Our school day is usually over before lunch unless Sarah is having a hard time with math, which leaves the rest of the day for the kids to play outside or for us to run errands.

So, did I cover everything? :)

Grades

Today, Sarah decided to give each of the kids a "chore chart" and grade them on how well they do their chores. Hey, anything to get the kids to clean the house as "play" I am all for. So, Sarah is walking around "grading" each of the kids. Here is what I hear:

Sarah: "Malakai, you are getting 4 A's, 2 F's and 3 E's. You better start working better."

Can you tell we don't grade school work around here? Where in the world did she get the E's from? Still, the kids know that F's are "bad" and are saying, "I will work harder, I promise! I don't want an F!" Again, what about the E's? Are those OK?

Another Malakai

At 5 years old Malakai says some of the funniest things.

We were driving home late last night from a trip to town. All the other kids were sleeping and Malakai says, "Can I pray for the army men who are fighting the war for us?" Of course I say, "Sure." Here is Malakai's prayer...

"Dear Lord, please keep all the army men safe and let all the bad guys get dead. Amen."

He's such a boy.

Power down

On Sunday it began snowing down to 500 feet, which is very unusual around here. We live at 4,000 and got quite a bit of snow. When the power went out, it went out BIG and we knew we would be the last on the list to get it restored. So, we hunkered down, trying to stay warm with our measely little gas fireplace. We sang Christmas carols and music when it got too dark to do anything else but for the most part we just did what we usually do when we are off school and at home. The kids played with their toys and make believe and I knitted away.

One thing I thought of while we waited(3 days) for the power to turn back on is what families who watch a lot of TV were doing. Their kids were probably whining and complaining that they were bored out of their minds with nothing to do. Such was not the case here and I was so very happy about that. It makes it much easier to deal with being cold and no power when your kids aren't whining the whole time.

The power is back on now, thankfully, and I am more and more looking forward to getting in to our new house where there will be a toasty warm wood stove and a generator to keep our fridge running.

(As a side note: The power went off again as I was writing this. Thank God it only was off for 10 minutes though as I have mountains of laundry to do today...)

Happy Birthday Justus!

Today, my baby is 2! I can't believe how fast he has grown from a baby to a little boy. He is such a joy to our family and we all can't imagine our home without him and his cute little self.

House update

* Drywall- done

* Tape and texture- done

* Shutters- done

* Interior Painting- done

* Hearth slab- done

Isn't it beautiful?

My laundry area. The door will be repainted white on the inside and black on the outside.

I never thought I would love the look of a garage so much! The paint is SO nice and white in there.

This is the kids' bathroom and I LOVE the color. It is the only different color in the house cause it was $$$ to do any more. Jonah and I figure we can repaint the bedrooms in a few years ourselves but bathrooms are a pain to paint!

This is the best shot I got of the hearth so far. That puppy was over 500 pounds and it was quite a chore to get it up the stairs without touching the walls. Even pushing it into the right place was hard! Tomorrow the stove will be on here and I will take a better picture.

The freshly painted doors. Bedroom doors on the left and downstairs garage doors to the right. Little booger in the middle;)

Tomorrow our kitchen and bathroom cabinets will be installed along with our wood stove. Can I just tell you how very, very exciting this all is? More photos tomorrow :)

Season's Greetings

Today I took the kids to In-N-Out for lunch today after dentist appointments. One of the things Sarah always does is check for the scriptures they have on their cups and burger wrappers. She held up her burger wrapper which had a Revelations verse(not sure which one) and then I noticed that the front of the wrapper said, "Season's Greetings" with some red and green holiday decorations.

Seems to me that if you are going to put a Bible verse on your product it would just make sense to say Merry CHRISTmas too. But, maybe I'm a little off here. What do you think?

Making memories

Today was a lazy day that ended up with us decorating for Christmas without ever planning to. Jonah went out to our front yard and cut a tree down for our tree and the kids and I put out all of my Nativity scenes around the house. After dinner we decorated the tree with lights and ornaments and then, and only then, was it time to put the train together. It was definitely the highlight for the kids. They laid on the ground and watched that train for at least 30 minutes before I sent them off to bed. These are memories being made and they are so sweet for me to watch.

6 years and one hour ago...

I got the call that there were 2 little girls who had just come into care and could I be there in an hour(I lived an hour and a half away). I rushed to pick them up and headed to McD's for dinner. At dinner Alana(5 mo.) soaked through her car seat and left a puddle of pee on the table so we rushed out to go to Walmart and buy diapers and some other necessities for both girls since I had NOTHING! I remember the look on Sarah's face when I told her she could pick out a pair of shoes(since the ones she had on were 3 sizes too big) a winter coat and some underwear. I would give a ton of money to have a video of that trip and the look on Sarah's face as she took 30 minutes choosing a new pair of shoes. When we got home and tucked the girls into their new beds I remember telling Jonah how strange and wonderful it was to have 2 little girls sleeping in our once empty rooms. I couldn't have guessed that night that those precious, scared and filthy little girls would become mine 2 1/2 years later.

Oh the difference a year makes

The following pictures were taken a year ago, almost to the date.

Sarah has matured and grown so much over the last year. She is working on growing her hair longer. ;)

My Alana-girl is also working on growing her hair longer. Even though it is thin it is nice to be able to do more with it and she LOVES having her hair done up pretty as much as I love doing hair.

My sweet boys. Judah and Isaiah don't look too different in the pictures but in real life they have both gotten much taller and, Judah especially, have begun to really fill out their clothes for a change.

This was taken last week. Don't mind Judah's normal angry-face-while-taking-pictures-face. He is one stubborn boy. Look at how beautiful Justus' face looks here compared to last year. It has been one long year of dietary changes and tests but we finally have his eczema somewhat under control.

Taken while my parents were here at our new house. My parents surprised me for my birthday by coming to visit! It was the best present ever... Yes, that is my beautiful mom.

Sarah-bearah at 10 years old. She's growing up too fast.

My sweet boy

(picture of Kai when he was about 19 months old.)

Today, driving in the car, Malakai says,

Kai: Hey Mommy?

Me: Yes, Kai.

Kai: When I get to heaven I am gonna give Jesus a really big kiss and God a really big hug cause I love them so much and miss them. Heaven will be really fun cause I'll get to be with my best friend all the time, huh?

Uhm, where's the tissue? Sometimes I wonder if they understand God's love for them and then they go and say something like this.

Crayon Cupcakes

I found that the "Crayon turnables" did not melt as quickly as the regular crayons and I'm not sure they would even melt if I left them longer. Next time I make these I will use only regular crayons and think they will come out much better. Also, let the pan cool about 10 minutes before you stick it in the freezer. It will help the cakes to come away cleaner from the pan.

First poop is a momentous occasion, right?

At least we think so. Justus was so proud of himself and showed each of the kids and his Daddy the stuff that was in the toilet. For the life of me I couldn't get a picture of him looking up because all he wanted to do is look in the toilet at what he had deposited;)

Taped and on to texture

Already I am not up-to-date on these pictures and these were taken on Thursday night. They will begin the texture on Monday and by the following Monday we will be painting! Can you even believe it? I can't.

Yesterday, Jonah and I drove 2 hours away to pick out our counters and then went from place to place trying to find a slab of slate for our hearth. We also wanted to pick out the tile for our bathrooms. Once we are finished with these things all of the purchases will be made. Amazing! I am having a hard time with the tile thing. We really like the look of honed slate but I'm not sure if it will look OK quite yet or what color I want to go with.

This is my laundry room. Jonah is walking into the "house" portion which begins at that doorway and goes promptly upstairs.

The family room

The hallway with our beautiful sunset through the window. Don't you just love that transom window above? That was my idea and I LOVE it!

The master bedroom with coffered ceiling.

The girls' bedroom. They have the best view.

The boys' room view isn't that bad either;)
