Separation anxiety

Ethan had his first real bout with separation issues this morning at church, and it was a big one! I honestly think he also has something else going on too, maybe teething or getting sick. He was SCREAMING and having a fit. They called me back twice and eventually told me I just needed to stay, that nothing was appeasing him. I guess a lot of kids go through this stage, I hope he goes through it fast because its exhausting!

Habitat for Humanity

Today our church had an outreach event where we helped build a house with habitat for humanity. It was such a great experience. Although it was in the 40's when a week ago it was predicting that it would be in the 80's today! We were all a bit chilly, but worked through it anyway. I personally helped paint trim and cut wood. Yes, I learned how to use a circular saw today for the first time! I felt empowered. The actual homeowners were there and it was neat to talk to them as well as another lady who was putting in volunteer hours and she is on the list to have her own home as well. I talked to her a lot, she was 16 weeks pregnant and we both laughed at pregnancy stories and things. It was fun to connect to people from all walks of life. I thoroughly enjoyed the day!
Ethan spent the day with his Grandaddy and Grandee. They said he did well which is always a relief when you leave your baby for the day. I guess this is practice for us going to Florida which is going to be so hard. I'm going to miss my baby boy! But I know this is a much needed vacation for Matt and I!
Anyhow, I hope we get to participate in another habitat experience again!

First skinned knee

Tonight we had our first skinned knee of many! I was sad and proud at the same time. Ha ha, it was like his rights into being an official little boy and not a baby!
We were over at our friends Brooks & Brad who were watching Ty, our friends' little boy. We were all outside playing croquet and grilling out. Ethan was throwing the balls on their cement slab. Well, he went a little too fast (he's starting to try and run) to get to a ball and bit the dust. It was bloody and everything, even got some on my t-shirt. Brooks helped clean him up and he even got a little band aid. Tonight when we got home I threw him in the bath because he was very dirty but I also wanted to make sure the scrape got really cleaned out. How funny to feel so many emotions over a little scrape. My little boy is growing up, but he'll always be my precious baby!

Pullen Park

Yesterday was another GORGEOUS day outside so Ethan and I ventured out to the park with some other mom's and their kiddos! Pullen Park is a huge park near NC State. I had never been there before other than to stop to eat lunch on a field trip when I was student teaching. Well, this park has lakes, streams, playgrounds, a train to ride, a carousel to ride, beautiful flowers and bridges. It was SO fun! I told Matt that we HAVE to go back for a family date there! Ethan actually stepped away from hugging my legs and toddled around the playground. He LOVED it! We also rode the train and the carousel. We all packed lunches and ate at a picnic table near the water where Ethan loved watching the geese and ducks. By the end he was ready to go and fell asleep in the car in no time.
We are enjoying this beautiful weather thoroughly. I even started running again with my running partner after a month or two hiatus! And tonight we are cooking out with some friends. LOVE IT!

Beautiful!
I realized yesterday how much I love cherry trees- so pretty!
Checking out the ducks
He wanted to be up there with them so badly.... soon enough!

Riddle Answer

I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books were not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you.
Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of them and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea, so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now, for there really are sixteen names of books in the bible in this story.

Hope you enjoyed it!

Ham

Lately I feel like i've had so much to blog about and I can't wait until the next post to share. I know sometimes I have dry spells, so I thought I would take advantage of this influx of stories!
Ethan is quite the ham here at home. He is still very reserved when he is out in public and usually clings to my legs or wants to be held at first when we go places. I know that will soon change and he'll be running off before we even get somewhere. But for now, he really shines at home with Matt and I. He has come up with a new "trick" all on his own. I know he is not the first child to do this, but it is so funny that Matt and I did not teach him this and he started doing it all on his own at home. He will be walking, stop dead in his tracks, bend over and put his head on the floor and look back between his legs. He laughs and smiles and sits there for a few minutes before standing up and moving on. I was able to catch the past few times with a camera, and it just tickles me so much to see him do this. He is going to have the funniest little personality, I can tell already. (He is also going to be VERY stubborn, but i'll save those stories for another day!)
Here's some pictures of my boy in action.

Attack of the frozen spaghetti & other fun stuff

I just hate it when I cause hurt to my son either directly (accidental of course) or indirectly. Ethan and I went grocery shopping this morning and I came home and was putting groceries away. I was organizing the freezer and Ethan was standing underneath me playing with the magnets on the fridge. Well, some things inevitably shifted and out plummeted the plastic container of frozen spaghetti sauce to the ground. It nailed (and I mean nailed) Ethan in the head. That thing has to weigh a couple of pounds and it was rock hard. The container shattered when it hit the floor after being cushioned by my sons head. He started screaming and it made a real pretty mark on his head. I think it is going to bruise. Of course pictures never do it justice with lighting issues, but I snapped a few anyway to add to his many others. Ahh, the joys of life. I was upset at first, but then just laughed. How random of an injury.

Anyhow, other news. Yesterday we went to the Dr. because Ethan has recently broke out into a rash on his back. Well, looks like we have a food allergy with our little one. They think he is definitely allergic to dairy. Fun times. (Note the sarcasm) He will have a skin allergy test to either confirm or deny the claim when he is 18 months old. But for now, No dairy. Of course we will do anything to help our child, i'm just praying he isn't one of those children that is allergic to everything! He's already got amoxicillian and dairy on his chart.

On a different note, our son is turning out to be quite the little character. He makes up his own fun games and is really a ham. He doesn't show off much to others or in public. He actually is quite the cling-on when we are out and about. But I know that will change. So for now I am thankful he is clinging to me rather than running off when we go to the park or other places. He LOVES playing with his ball and playing hide & seek. I am thoroughly enjoying my son and I hope we can add more to our family.... one day!

Fun Riddle

See if you can find 16 books of the bible in this riddle below. I will post the answer Friday! Leave a comment and let me know if you found them, I would love to hear!

Unexpected trip

Today we went to the zoo! It was forecasted to be a gorgeous day today and boy it was! We got up this morning and I was eating breakfast with Ethan and I casually mentioned to Matt that we should go to the zoo. I was asking, already sure the answer would be "maybe some other time". But when he lifted his eyebrows like, "we could"... I jumped all over it! I quickly took a shower and when Matt was in the shower I got Ethan ready and packed some snacks and off we went!

Thankfully the day didn't go like the car trip there went. Poor Matt went to put his full can of coke in the cupholder and spilled it all over his jeans and the car. I was trying to use Ethan's sippy cup of water to clean Matt up and I spilled the water on my leg. Then after we got all cleaned up, I passed the sippy back to Ethan and I guess the lid wasn't on tight enough after I had just used it and it spilled all in his lap. So we had to pull over and change Ethan into shorts and clean him up to let his pants dry. WOW!

THANKFULLY the rest of the day was AMAZING! The weather was gorgeous, the zoo was a little crowded but not too bad. Ethan did SO well in his stroller the whole time. We think Ethan's favorite parts were the gorillas and the rain forest greenhouse. At the gorilla exhibit Matt held him up right in front of the glass where the gorilla was and Ethan started barking at it like a dog. HA! Then in the rainforest Matt would hold him under the foliage and let it tickle his head and he LOVED it! The rest of the time he was more into people watching than animal watching.

We did a lot of walking. For those of you that know the zoo, we started in North America, stopped in the middle of the zoo for lunch, then finished down in Africa. But instead of riding the Tram back to our parking lot, we decided to walk back through the zoo. What a workout! The zoo had more hills than I remember, but I guess I was never pushing an almost 30 pound baby in a jogger up those hills! Anyhow, we finished and left around 2:00 and even though it was well into Ethan's nap he really was perfect. We couldn't have asked for a better day!

THANK YOU God for creating amazing animals to look at and for beautiful sunny weather to enjoy! HAPPY EASTER! I hope you get to enjoy an unexpected event with your families soon too!

Giraffe's- one of God's amazing and unique creatures!
Black with white stripes or white with black stripes?!
Me and my boy!
Little monkeys
My family in the tropical bird aviary
Sleepy bear
Flamingos are amazing... such a skinny leg holding up a pink bird!
Ethan barking at the gorilla, SO funny!
Who knew plants would be his favorite part?! TICKLE TICKLE!
More plant fun!

Delurking: Discovering my hidden fans

I'm copying an idea from my friend Sheila. She wrote a post about delurking...
I want to know who's reading my blog! Basically if your name isn't mentioned in my blog list on the left, then I have no idea about yours or if you're reading mine! I am just curious about who reads about US and I would love to expand my list that I scroll through of blogs I read. Blogs are such a fun and easy way to keep up with friends and family. So please, leave a comment to me and let me know who you are!!!!

Jibber Jabber

Lately Ethan has really been trying to talk. He has always jabbered a lot, but now actual words are starting to come and it is SO fun! It was really like turning a light switch on, one day he just starting trying to talk. Here are the words that make up his current vocabulary...
truck
trash
papa
mama
dada
dog
bath
baby
ball
hi
bye
book
light
yes
Now of course they don't come out with perfect enunciation, but it is so cute to hear him actually say words. After sitting and typing out the words, I realize he is saying way more than I even thought! Wow! I know sooner or later he is going to be talking our ears off!

Tag

SO SORRY! My blogging fans are disappointed I didn't TAG someone from yesterday's post!
So I Tag.... E, Stacy, and Jen!

Tag, you're it

I have been tagged by my friend Shannon to tell 10 things about myself. For those of you new bloggers out there, tagging is sorta like an e-mail forward where you are supposed to respond to a challenge and then send it back out. So here are 10 things you may not know about me.

1. I am scared of clowns and any characters like Mikey or Minnie Mouse. I know deep down that obviously they are not going to hurt me, but I can't stand them! I avoid them at all costs!

2. If money were no object I would have another baby right now!

3. I will not eat eggs, I will not eat them with a fox, I will not eat them in a box! I physically cannot stomach them, they make me puke!

4. I LOVE ice cream and chocolate.

5. I have a bad habit of letting dishes pile up until you cannot see the counter top and then I end up doing like 3 loads of dishes in a row in the dish washer when I do clean them. (I am getting better about this!)

6. I have been to China and would go back in a heart beat!

7. I still sleep with a body pillow which I started using when I was pregnant and needed support under my enlarging stomach.

8. I have to sleep with a fan on in our room to drown out any noise that my son makes, I wake up at any sigh or sound he makes.

9. I LOVE joking around and having fun.

10. I have an addiction to Target that needs serious attention!

No crying over spilled.... tea

Today is absolutely GORGEOUS! I met some other mama's and kiddies at the park today and we had fun. Silly me, I forgot my camera. For those of you who really know me, you know this made me real sad. I was hoping to get some good pictures of my cutie having a blast. Oh well, I decided to go into the archives and pull out some pictures you haven't seen. I didn't have to go too far back when I found some that made me laugh!
A week or so ago Matt and I were sitting in the living room eating dinner. He had a HUGE plastic cup full of sweet tea on the end table next to the couch. I saw Ethan eyeing it and told Matt to move it so he wouldn't go grab it and spill it. So Matt moved it and wedged the cup between him and the sofa.... thinking it was safe. You know where this is going. Ethan came up and grabbed the cup and it spilled EVERYWHERE. All over Matt and our couch. It poured down and was pooling under the cushions. So we took the cushions off and wiped them down and cleaned up all the tea. We left the cushions off the couch so they could dry. That's when we saw Ethan crawl up and pull himself up onto the couch with no cushions. He thought he was all that. He started walking back and forth on the couch. So Matt and I moved the cushions in front of the couch on the floor just in case he fell, it would catch him. WELL, he thought those were meant for a different reason. He walked to the edge of the couch and jumped off! How brave! So then we lined the edges of the cushions with pillows because he was jumping so hard and rolling off. He had a BLAST! The boy has so many toys, but this is what he chose for his entertainment. He did it for 15 minutes at least. Crawling up on the couch, jumping off, then crawling back up. Back and forth, back and forth! We loved watching him laugh and have so much fun!
Anyhow, we're off to Charlotte to visit my brother and his family. It is my niece's birthday party this weekend. I am so excited to see them. She is hilarious and so cute! I can't believe all these kids around in my life are growing up too fast! Slow down, ok?!!!!

...one fell off and bumped his head...

Sad morning this morning. Everything ended up being ok, but boy did I cry. Ethan and I were playing around and he was real hyper. We always go into our bedroom and throw him on the bed and wrestle around. So I went in and threw him on. He got so excited so fast, he lunged forward. He happened to be right on the side of the bed and he fell right off! My heart sank for a minute and I jumped up so fast and scooped him up in my arms. The first-aid certified person in my head told me, "don't move him, you could further his injury if he's hurt." But the mom in me screamed, "pick up your baby and hold him!" So I did what the mom in me said. He cried very loudly. I grabbed his paci and put it in his mouth and examined his little body. He actually fell on his side, which is good, but also could have been bad. I made sure his collar bone and little arm wasn't broken or hurt. He stopped crying pretty quickly and I assessed that he was ok. So I snuggled him a little longer and cried. I put him down, and off he ran to play again.
That was a good experience in the end and I praise God that he wasn't hurt....and I know there will be more of those moments in his life... but it was awful to see your little boy fall and know that he could be hurt. My heart just sank. Injuries and sickness are the hard parts of motherhood... but thank God the good far outweighs the bad!!!! Off to go play with my son...

Busy Bee's

When I saw that I haven't blogged since last Thursday I knew I must have been busy or something! I didn't even check blogs to see who has posted since Friday! WOW! Ha ha! You know we've been busy bees if that's the case! This weekend we were on the go a lot! So much so, that Ethan stayed at his Grandaddy's and Grandee's Friday night as well has his Papa and Grammy's Saturday night! Friday night we had a staff dinner at Mike & Courtney's house for church staff and their wives. It was a lot of fun and we ate yummy food! The highlight was watching Ty (almost 3) and Jackson (3 years old) slide down the stairs backwards on their stomachs. It was hilarious. Almost as hilarious as Tim pushing his own son (Ty) down the stairs faster so he could win against Jackson! The poor boys had little strawberries on their tummys when the fun was over. They were having a BLAST!
Saturday Matt was going to help with litter day but it got rained out. I was off to my favorite consignment sale. I got to shop when the doors opened because I volunteered for the sale. I hit the JACKPOT in clothes. I averaged $2.00 per article of clothing. Ethan is stocked up on shorts, shirts, pants, bathing suits for this year and even some clothes for next! As soon as I left there I picked Matt up and we attended a church class on furthering your spiritual growth. Immediately after that we rushed to Matt's dads house to pick up Ethan. ( I don't think I ever missed him so much for some reason- gotta practice for when we are away from his for a week next month! I don't even want to think about that yet!) He did really well with them and even tried his first hamburger with them. They said he didn't eat too much of the patty, but downed the bun! Anyhow, we ate dinner with them at Cracker Barrel (YUM!) and were off to my parents to watch the UNC vs. DUKE game. They so graciously agreed to keep Ethan for the night because the game was going to start late. Matt's old college roomate, Danny, and his wife came up and met us to watch the game. We haven't seen each other since Ethan was 9 weeks old. They have a 1 year old girl named Rhyan who is SO cute! So they came up, we watched the game and loved to see the UNC VICTORY!!!! GO Heels! We all left and came back to our place to catch up. Danny, Jess, and Rhyan stayed with us and we woke up the next morning and headed to church. Not only did we stay up to 1:00a.m. talking, but then we had the time change. So needless to say, we were all sleepy the next day.
Sunday morning was great as we took communion and reflected on Jesus Christ and how he died for us. I love just sitting there and reflecting on a God who loved us so much and knew that we were going to fail... but instead of condemning us, he provided a way for us to be in a right relationship with him again. All you have to do is believe and accept. No strings attached. AMAZING.
From church we headed out to eat with Danny & Jess as well as another couple from church. Right when we got home our babies went to bed and I took Jess to the consignment sale. Thankfully i'm tight with the owners (not really- I just helped them out a lot) and they let us in to shop even though only consignors were supposed to be shopping that day. Jess made out like a bandit as well! Girls clothes are SOOOOOO CUTE! I realized then and there that we HAVE to have a girl. (Not just for that reason, but part of it) ha!!!! I would be in trouble because there were SO many cute dresses and jumpers. We left the sale (after 2.5 hours of being there) and got home. They had to go home to pick their dog up from the kennel and that is when we finally sat down for the first time! Last night we were SO tired. Thankfully we had a great nights sleep. Ethan didn't make a peep and slept from 8:00 last night to 8:15 this morning. He usually sleeps about 12 hours, but has been waking up some in the night. Part of the reason for that is he is getting another tooth. His sharp incisor on the bottom right is coming in. It is going to bust through any minute... literally.
Anyhow, not much else going on after that busy weekend. Ethan and I went grocery shopping this morning. I picked up a lot of fresh produce this trip. Ethan tried a clementine for the first time this morning. He LOVED it! He hasn't had any citrus fruit yet. I just haven't thought to introduce him to it. I also picked up some kiwi- I am interested in seeing how he likes that as well.
Well, no pictures with this post, but I hope to have some soon. I am definitely slowing down with the picture taking. I guess I realized that it was a bit much to have over 6,000 pictures of your baby his FIRST year of life! If I kept going at that rate I would have over 60,000 by the time he's ten! WOW! Ha ha!

Money in my pocket

I went to take some pictures on my camera today and forgot I had some on there that weren't downloaded yet! I had that feeling that you get when you find money in your pants pocket you didn't know you had. Ha. I know, i'm a dork.
These pictures are from last weekend when we all got together for my nephews birthday. (He was born 12 hours after Ethan was)
*Sidestory- yesterday we went to pick up something from a lady who goes to our church. She owns a couple of horses so we took Ethan out to see them. As soon as he saw them, he started signing "please" frantically and pointing towards the horse. It was so funny to see him so excited! I loved it. We went and petted the horses, he just smiled and laughed the whole time. Wish I had my camera with me.

Cousins born 12 hours apart- Ethan & Elijah
I LOVE THIS PICTURE! Ethan riding the tricycle- or Ethan being pushed by Granddaddy and Granddee back and forth
Keeping up with the big boys- playing basketball with Jackson or whom Ethan calls "ya-son"
The whole reason we own a digital camera- I LOVE my boy!

Hubby

While I blog a TON about our pride and joy, Ethan.... I do want to write about the other man in my life. He is the LOVE of my life and best friend. Here are a couple of things you may not know about us...
* We call each other everytime we leave somewhere or are going somewhere.
* We always end our phone conversations with I LOVE YOU, no matter what.
* We can always talk in the car on road trips about anything
* We LOVE playing games together and even make up stupid games together for fun
* Our only serious quarrel was over a card game
* Matt has a contagious passion for people and God
* He is the bottomless pit and can eat anything and not gain an ounce
* He is very athletic and his speed is what makes him good
* We kiss each other every night in bed before we go to sleep
* He FREEZES, even during the summer and always wears socks to bed
* He is addicted to fantasy sports- baseball, football, you name it
* He is a kid at heart and still loves his playstation (hey, its better than other addictions out there!)
* If i'm not home to make him lunch, he'll be content on eating a bag of popcorn
* Our favorite restaurants (that we both agree on) are Salsa Fresh and Hibachi Express
* He's one of those people whos eyes smile before their mouth does
* I can ALWAYS get him to smile by saying, "Don't smile!"
* He is extremly ticklish
* He is a wonderful father & I love to watch him interact with Ethan
* He was an AMAZING stay-at-home dad for 3 months, I was VERY proud of him! He even went through Ethan's stomach bug of vomiting and loose bowels on his own during the day
* Matt LOVES reading and studying
* He is very passionate about politics and actually KNOWS what he is talking about
* He is a die hard Carolina fan... Carolina Tarheels, Carolina Hurricanes, and Carolina Panthers.... much more the first one than the last 2.

Sidenote: as i'm typing this, we both are laughing hysterically because Ethan is snoring SO loud and we can hear him out in the living room!
"It's like a dying wombat in there!" Matt just said that about Ethan's snoring.

*I love his humor
*Lastly, it was his smile and easy going personality that first attracted me to him
I could never and don't ever want to imagine my life without him!

Feeding the Geese

Ethan and I thought we would take advantage of this gorgeous day and go feed some geese. There is a lake literally in our backyard. We slipped our crocs on and off we went. He did really well walking in the grass. I found a nice spot free of goose poop right on the bank and sat down. Ethan was in my lap and I started breaking bread off and throwing it to the geese. He loved it...at first. He was laughing and gesturing towards the geese. He even gestured towards it and signed 'please'. I told him we couldn't touch them, but I don't think he understood. Anyhow, Ethan didn't quite grasp the concept of throwing food to the geese. I mean, why throw them food?! Can't we just eat it ourselves?! The booger kept grabbing it out of my hands and shoving it in his mouth! Every time I would throw them a piece he would whine as if I were throwing them HIS lunch. It was quite funny! Guess we need to wait a little longer for him to grasp that concept.
