Please!

Lately Ethan has been putting his hand toward the object he desires and grunting. Last night Matt and I had enough of that. We spent 5 minutes teaching him how to sign please. We would hold him and inevitably he would point towards something he wanted and grunt. We would do the sign, say please, grab his hand to do the sign, then let him touch what he wanted. (The clock, picture frame, microwave buttons, magnet on the fridge). We did this for a good 5 minutes and lo' and behold he now knows how to sign PLEASE!!!! YES!!!! This morning when I was changing his diaper he gestured and grunted towards a wall decoration in his room. I said, "say please" and he did it! I thought for sure he would forget his new trick over night.
Matt and I were so proud of him last night. Sure there might be kids that can sign many things by now. But Ethan is definitely one of those kids that wants to do things his own way in his own time. He just frankly doesn't care. We tried for so long to teach him bye bye and he NEVER did it. He would look at us like... this is fun (sarcastically) and would be off playing with a toy. Last week we were sitting in the living room and he started waving his hand and said, "HIIIIII!" What a goober!
He's got many fun tricks. I sign to him "all done", and his way of telling me all done is by taking off his bib. Seems like there is no way to teach him to do the official sign, but I know he's all done because he's come up with a sign on his own. When I ask him if he's hungry, he starts moving his tongue. It's so funny. He's doing his own things to communicate and its all him! I love it! So why push him to do something for the sake of doing it?! When I ask him if he wants milk, he walks to the fridge. When I take him down out of his high chair I say, "ok, lets go play with toys!" And he walks into his play area and starts playing. HE'S GROWING UP TOO FAST, but I LOVE it! I love to see him discover things on his own.
Other fun stuff he does completely on his own:
when he eats blueberries he puts them in his mouth and sucks the berry out of the skin off; he has learned the art of popping cheerios to make them flip off his tray; he hides small balls under the couch and looks at you daring you to find them; window watching; tackles pillows when they're on the floor.... and much more i'll save for another day!
We love him!

Funny Boy!

Even though Ethan has been sick the past few days, today his little personality came back! We were having a blast this morning (despite the few moments of fussyness in between).
First, he climbed up on his hippo walker all on his own and picked up a book and started reading it! Ha ha!!! I just laughed and grabbed the camera.
Then, he picked up his football and stuck it in his mouth and started walking all over the apartment like a dog with its toy. He thought this was hilarious and was laughing and smiling while doing it. The football was soaked after this, notice the wet spots!
Then it was like he discovered for the first time that he could actually WALK with his hippo walker! He grabbed that thing and was going back and forth and BACK AND FORTH throughout the apartment. It was SO cute. He has fallen in love with that thing. The only thing is he hasn't quite figured out how to turn around once he hits a wall and he just starts shaking it profusely like it's stuck. Boy was he tuckered out when it was nap time!

Year of traveling

Our calendar is already packed full of events and I can't wait! Our most exciting trip is coming up first, in April. My parents are graciously letting all the kids use their time share that they received this year. The time share is in Las Vegas, however you can cash them in for a week somewhere else. So Matt and I are taking a much needed vacation to Florida. We are going to stay in a nice resort in Orlando and we plan to go to Disney and possibly Sea World (we'll see how the funds are at that point). This is our first real vacation since we've been married. And guess what?! We're doing it baby free! Not that we don't love and adore our precious baby boy, but we need some alone time! So needless to say I am counting down the days to enjoy a vacation with my sweet hubby!
We also have a week where we are going to the camp we met at! He was asked to speak to 180 7-9th graders and I am SO excited to go! God has used Matt in a great way with his speaking abilities and I am excited to see him be used that week. Let alone the fact that Ethan will really enjoy the camp this year. Last year he was barely 5 months old, but this year he will actually be walking around the camp and enjoy swimming and whatnot! I am almost as excited about this trip as our vacation to Florida!!!
We also have a week where we'll be going on a vacation with Matt's side of the family. Last year we went to Lake James and had a great time. The plans are still in the works, so I don't know much about this year but we are looking forward to that as well.
Then we're going with my family to Gatlinburg for a half a week. They have a few weeks banked up in their time share, so they are trading it in to get a 2 bedroom place where my brother's family will go for half the week, and we'll go for the other half.
WHEW! Oh, and I almost forgot, it is our year (we rotate) to go to Illinois for Thanksgiving. Some of my dad's family live up there and we missed out last year so this year it's our turn to go! I am VERY excited about that as well. My mom, My Aunt Linda, sister-in-law, Aunt Wanda, and my 2 cousins all go shopping together at the butt-crack of dawn (sorry, that's what we call it!) the day after Thanksgiving!
YAY!!!!!!! I love it! I never really realized how much I loved being on the go until i've been a stay-at-home mom. The first month or two Ethan was born I got so stir crazy. Now that he's older it is getting better, but I realized that I LOVE going places. Even if it's to go to the mall and sit or walk. I love getting out. So YEEEEE HAAAAW for the year of traveling!

Baby seal

The health care system is loving us, but I am sure our insurance providers aren't! Ethan is sick AGAIN! We just got back from the Dr. and he has the CROUP. It started only 2 days ago but he was up every hour last night with a horrible barky cough. It is so true that they sound like a seal when they have this. A little baby seal was living in his crib last night. His little voice is so hoarse. So he got put on a steroid for the next 3 days. It was either that or a shot at the office and the oral steroid just seemed easier. No wonder he's been extra clingy the past few days. On the flip side he is walking everywhere now. He walks a good 85% of the time now. Standing up from sitting. Walking in a direction and turning around to walk the other way. He's also bending down to pick objects up. It is opening a whole new world for him. He wanted to walk all over in the Dr. office this morning. There's no stopping him now!

SO FUN!

Within the past week Ethan has just made huge strides in all aspects. He is now walking pretty good. He can bend down and pick up an object and stand back up. He walked over to Matt, turned around and walked to me. He is walking all around the apartment, but when we have him out he refuses to show off! That's ok! We just say God gifted him with humility, not pride! Ha.
His latest thing which is SO fun is he LOVES to feed me what he is eating. He puts it in my mouth and just CRACKS up! It is SO funny! Except then I end up eating most of what is on his plate! Ethan is also very crafty- not martha stewart crafty but mischievious- he crawls over to the couch and hides things under it. But the way he does it is so funny. He crawls over there and looks back at you to make sure you're not watching then he slides it under the couch and then looks at you like, "huh, what ball? i'm not doing anything!"
His personality is just unfolding and I know it will just continue to change. He LOVES to cuddle and lay on us. Right now he is almost borderline clingy. He wants to be held and wants to be right next to us at all times. But then he LOVES to get wild! One of his favorite games is tackling the pillows or playing on the couch. Both of which consists of getting really wound up.
And he's still my window watcher. At least once a day he crawls over on his own and sits there just looking out. Sometimes he'll sit there a good 5 or 10 minutes just watching anything and everything. He also is a scavenger. I just had to stick my finger practically down his throat while typing this because he puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. This is different from the 6 month old sticking toys in his mouth- he now will pick up every thread, crumb, rock, whatever and stick it in his mouth. Needless to say mama has to sweep and mop more than she ever has!
So there are so new and old fun things. He's just at a really neat stage in his life where he is discovering everything and he can interact. He is really trying to talk. My mom insists that last night he said "dog" and "bath". Since I wasn't here I can't vouch for her, but I do have to say that he repeats a lot of things and LOVES to jabber. So who knows! Off to play with my 1 year old!

Too close for comfort

So yesterday was Ethan's 1 year old check up. His appointment was at 10:00. We were going to pick up Matt from work on the way. I was taking my time getting ready and sending a few e-mails when I glanced at the clock and saw that I needed to go get Matt in 10 minutes but I still needed to get dressed, get Ethan dressed, print off his ages and stages form for the appointment, get his snack & sippy cup ready, and a few other things. So I start running all around frantically getting ready. Well I had Ethan up on the changing table which happens to be his dresser as well. I had the second (of 3) drawers open looking for what I was going to change him in. He must have been leaning over to grab my hair or something and HE ROLLED OFF THE TABLE! Praise the Lord he just landed in the drawer which was FULL of clothes because I had just done laundry and put them away. I grabbed him (he was crying from being scared) and just thanked God that he didn't hit the floor or bang his head on the edge of the dresser drawer or something. Wow, it could have been worse!
So anyhow, his appointment went well. He is growing well! He was in the 90% for height (31 inches) and 85% for weight (26lbs- which he was 27 a month ago, so don't know what happened there) and for everyone who says he has a big head, he was only in the 75%- SO THERE! Ha ha! He got some shots and really did well but the nurse wasn't ready for his strength. She said he is really strong- has the strength of a 1.5 or 2 year old! She was scared he was going to wrestle away when she was giving him his immunizations. We always thought he was tough for his age, but that confirmed it. The only thing is his little excema is getting pretty bad and they were a concerned. They told us to try taking dairy out of his diet and put him on soy milk and see if that helps. One of the nurses did that for her son and it cleared up a little. So we'll see. We bought more steroid cream and lotions to goop him up with, but if it doesn't show signs of improvement within a week we are definitely trying the no dairy thing.
So that is the update on us. I'm waiting for pictures from a dear friend who took them at his birthday party, but I will post some as soon as I get them!

Birthday Eve

Tomorrow is a big day! Ethan turns 1 year old tomorrow and I can not believe how fast he is growing up! To honor him the day before he turns a year old, I want to just tell a little about him to those of you that don't see him on a regular basis.

Ethan is the joy of Matt and I's life! He is FULL of energy and has a really content and sweet nature. Ethan loves to be tickled and chased around. His favorite thing to do is stand on the couch and dive into the cushions. He is a great eater and loves vegetables. His recent favorite is avocado. He loves cheese and will happily drink water from his sippy cup. Ethan wakes up so happy. He can go from a dead sleep to smiling and ready to go at a moments notice. He is learning to walk and is so proud of himself when he does. He looks to us for approval and is awaiting our excited clap. He listens well for his age but definitely can show a stubborn side. He usually will listen when you say no, but he doesn't like hearing it. He can say mama, dada, and ball very well. He went through a stage of staying "eese" for cheese, but hasn't done that in a while. He is a very good mimiker. He can mimic any sound you make. Clicking his tongue is his favorite thing to do... as well as make a surprised face, gasping as he does it. Ethan LOVES animals. He laughs and wants to touch dogs and cats. He loves reading books and really likes the touch and feel ones with the different textures. Ethan loves to cuddle and we have a nightly ritual of snuggling before he goes to bed. He will just lay there content and we laugh at each other and repeat each others noises. It is so sweet. If I knew I was guaranteed to have another child like him, I would have 10 more. God has truly blessed us with a wonderful son and I cannot wait to see him grow up and have his personality unfold even more. We love you booger, and we know you won't remember your party tomorrow but we hope you have fun as we honor your birth! Happy Birthday Eve!

Date night

So Matt and I did "Valentine's" tonight so we weren't waiting for 3 hours at restaurants tomorrow night. Guess where we went???

Yup, you guessed it. The Melting Pot. It was SO good. The first time we went there was for our anniversary last year. We were clueless about how it worked. It was quite comical actually. This time we were pros and we tried a different cheese fondue which we LOVED. We practically scraped the pot with our tongues. I am sure we would have done that if we knew we weren't going to get burned. Ha. (The only reason we ate there was because we got a $100 gift card for Christmas from my parents- otherwise it would have been McDonalds for us... ha ha ha)
ANYHOW, it was way good. My very sweet husband wrote a letter which was priceless, and we exchanged small gifts. I told him that Valentine's is so unfair because there will never be a way to express to him how much I love him. But it is fun to celebrate.

Relaxing busyness

Does that post title make sense?! It does to me. I have so much going on and I LOVE IT! God has been teaching me so much this week about having patience and love in the midst of being busy. Normally I would stress or do things with attitude, but I am really trying to have a different outlook. I just had to laugh when I got Ethan up the other morning, started making his breakfast and mine at the same time. Meanwhile he isn't quite grasping the whole patience thing like I am and while he's fussin' I quickly get stuff over to the table. I start feeding him and sit down to feed myself... and do you see anything wrong with this picture?!

I grabbed Ethan's baby spoon! Instead of throwing it in the sink in frustration, I just laughed and grabbed my camera and snapped a picture. How funny.

I have been running errands getting ready for my baby's first birthday party. I really saved a lot of money with buying all the plates, forks, napkins, cups, etc. at the Dollar tree. So I didn't feel guilty about ordering some CUTE cakes at Target today. The party is sports themed (of course- daddy wouldn't have it any other way). I don't want to spill the beans too much, because I will definitely post pictures this weekend. I just cannot believe my baby is going to be 1 year old. I broke out the whole milk and started mixing it with his formula to make the transition a little easier on him. He is slowly transition from bottles to sippy cups. He uses the sippy all the time with juice and water, but he was rejecting his milk in it. So many changes. The biggest one I am looking forward to is facing his carseat forward. His poor little legs have been bent up because he is currently rear-facing. He is way too big to be facing backwards still. I just can't wait for him to face forward which will be easier access for me from the front seat as well as letting him look all around and see what is coming instead of what is going, you know what I mean?!

Well my precious is waking up from his nap... Matt and I are off on a date tonight for Valentine's--- yeeee haaaaw! I am LOVING mommyhood and wifehood!!!!

Reunited!

So after almost 4 long years of not seeing each other, a good friend of mine and I met up today! Ethan and I met Sheila and Olivia at a mall to walk and talk and do some catching up. I mean we pretty much knew each other's lives because we are avid bloggers, but it was SO GREAT to see each other face to face and just talk. Sheila and I went to college together and have since gotten married and started a family. She is an AMAZING woman who I admire greatly! (I'm not just saying that because she reads my blog either ;)) Little Olivia is beautiful! She was so happy and content. Both her and Ethan did really well sitting in their strollers. Although I do have to say that Ethan wasn't his normal chipper self. He had fallen asleep in the car on the way to the mall and was ready for a nap! Let's just say that I knew he would fall asleep the minute I turned the car on and he really did! I hope to have another encounter with them soon!!!
***Ethan did not smile in any of these pictures. I am praying that he does tomorrow when we get his 1 year old pictures done!!!!

Ethan and Olivia- strollin'
Olivia was all smiles!
I thought she was making a move on Ethan, but really she was making a move on his paci!

Fun at the park

Today was absolutely GORGEOUS! Matt got home from the church office early so that we could go for a walk and go to the big park near us. We had a great time out in the beautiful weather. Ethan loves the swings and that is pretty much all he can do anyway. Although, today we put him in the sand for the first time. At first he didn't know what to do with himself, but he soon wanted to be put down in it the whole time. We met our friends Tim and Anna there with their son Ty and we walked around a trail with them. It was a great afternoon. Ethan definitely needed a bath tonight!

Productivity

I just feel GREAT when i'm productive. Today has been one of those days and it's only 2:00p.m.! This morning Ethan and I got up and went grocery shopping at Target. (It was definitely time!) The trip just went SO well. I had my list, my coupons, and my starbucks- thanks to a gift card from Mike & Courtney! Ethan had his sippy cup of juice and his goldfish. We were off! This trip was extra exciting because we are starting to eat way healthier than we have been. I've never bought so much vegetables from the produce section. Because Ethan is getting old enough to not have to eat babyfood out of a jar, we are buying fresh fruits and vegetables for him to enjoy. We got squash, sweet potatos, grapes, zuchinni for us and much more!

After grocery shopping I came home and ate lunch with the hubby. He headed off to the church office. I put Ethan down for a nap and then it was "go" time! I cleaned out and organized our kitchen pantry. Took out some trash. Sat down and paid ALL our bills. Walked out and mailed the bills. Organized our tax information. Called the urgent care about Ethan's visit when he had his stomach bug before Christmas- had billing issues because they are a new practice and haven't gotten their code with our insurance company. I've done 2 loads of wash and picked up around our apartment. I just sat down to take a break and check my e-mail. It is SUCH a beautiful day. I think sunny beautiful weather just energizes my heart and body. I have a "to do" list I made in a word document that I would like to get done the next few months or sooner. I was able to cross 2 things off that list today. So anyhow, enough tooting of my own horn. It just feels good to accomplish things and the fun part is enjoying doing them. My mom called me admist all this and she said she is really praying about having a good heart and attitude in doing the daily or monthly mudain things like grocery shopping and paying bills. No matter what you do or how tedious or monotanous it is- your attitude and heart can determine whether it is a positive experience or not. I pray that I am the best stay-at-home mom... working and loving on my family with joy and being thankful to God for blessing us with the ability to do all these things.

I challenge you to look at your "chores" and tasks in a new light.

So cruel

"Uhhh... if I could only reach..."
"Mom, you are SO not fun!"
**He actually wasn't making this face, he was getting ready to scream his head off in frustration, but the camera caught it at perfect timing...looks like he is giving me "the look"!

Carolina Game

Last night was fun. Matt and I had a date night while his dad and step mom watched Ethan. We went to dairy queen for dinner. I was CRAVING an ice cream. That is what I had for dinner. (I know, not very healthy, but I REALLY wanted one!) We got stuck in traffic so we were a little late for the game. Being late really made me sad because one of my FAVORITE parts of a Carolina basketball game experience is the "jump around" dancing that Danny Green leads before the game. Matt knew I was sad and as we were listening to the game on the radio he started dancing in the car and popping his shirt and whatnot. It was SO funny! It made my night. The game was a blast and they won of course!!! Hansborough made a ridiculous dunk which made the place go wild. We had a great night and we are so thankful for the blessing that these tickets were to us! I decided not to post the few pictures we took because I guess I don't need to document EVERY aspect of our life on here. Some people tease me that I blog our life. But hey, if we ever have a house fire and we lose everything, at least I have my pictures on here...or something... ;)
