Week #4 letter

I'm not going to complain about William's letters anymore...I love them all, whether they are long or short, detailed or not, I don't care.

This week's letter came on Monday.  I wasn't expecting it, but I got a letter in the mail from him today and so I knew that he was traveling to San Francisco tomorrow, so I didn't think I'd be getting an e mail this week....so I'm thrilled to get this Monday e mail!!!!

I think I'll go back to just writing what the letter was about since that's what he asked me to do and that's what he thinks I am doing.  Last week's was just so "William" that I didn't want to try to change his words, because I am just not as funny or good at storytelling!

I had sent him a picture of the Sharks first round draft pick....William's very first sentence just says "that guy looks super lame"....haha...which I thought was funny because WHO starts a letter with not "hi" or "dear" or any greeting at all but just a sentence - he looks really lame.

Then he quoted the scripture John 14:6 ""when I am weak, then i am strong".  He bore his testimony of teaching with the spirit.  He realizes that he has to be humble and let the spirit take over in order to teach the investigators.  He knows that he cant do anything without Jesus Christ and the infinite atonement.  He believes he can do all things through Jesus Christ and that he is only powerful when he is humble.

He also wrote about his investigator Chris, who has committed to baptism 3 times, but backed out all three times.  William knows that he has been too imposing sometimes and that when he lets the spirit work, it works, even though he may be the worst teacher ever.  The investigator is driving him crazy, but it's "so good".  I think that means that teaching him has taught William a lot.

He is happy to get out of "prison" tomorrow and visit California.  He asked about the Utah fires because it is so smoky there, but they are not able to follow any news, so they have no idea what is going on.

He was really excited that his two french teachers (who the whole district has been trying to set up) went out on a date last weekend and the sister teacher was blushing a lot when she told them about the date.

He wants to know what is going on on Facebook and and he has almost reached his half way point in the MTC, but he doesn't like the TALL (computer program study aid) because it is soooooo boring.

There is a French Elder in his district who is SUPER sick.  Everyone is calling what he has the "le mort noir" (the black death) because he is so sick.  And because all of the French Elders have been exposed to it they are not allowed to shake hands with anyone.  So he thinks its really hard and rude and weird to have to deny everyone their handshakes.

Some of his best friends at the MTC are Elder Chelson's district.  They are the ones who have gotten everyone to call him "Neil Diamond".

All of the elders on his floor who were going to the Philippines ans left today, so there are only 3 rooms of people there right now on that floor.  One of the other elders and William run around the floor every morning at 6:00 am for exercise.  And everyone in their room does pushups and sit ups and stuff for 20 minutes every night.

L. Tom Perry is going to be speaking at the MTC tomorrow, but that is the day that William will be gone, so he wont get to hear him.  And he hasn't seen any of the General Authorities, but most of them are there right now at the MTC.

His friends Jessica George and Katie Beus are in the MTC now.

His last sentence said to tell EVERYONE to write to him and have Melanee tell SVU people to write to him.

So, everyone write to him.  Let me know if you want to learn how to use Dearelder.com...or just send a letter (and pictures) to the MTC address on the sidebar of the blog here!

Questions and Answers

I wanted answers so I sent William a letter with questions and then he just had to circle the answers.  Simple and easy, right?  I don't think we will be getting a letter tomorrow because that's the day he is going to San Francisco to visit the French consulate and try to get a VISA.  So this might be the only blog update of the week (sad).

Week #3 letter

Here is William's latest letter to us (not paraphrased)---
Hey! so now that we're in the groove I get super duper bored all the time. The best times are where I can just sit and look at a tree or sit on the grass. haha.  Thanks for sending all of those pictures.
So tomorrow we are getting 4 new french missionaries and the week after we are getting 43!!!  It's really weird being the "oldest" french missionaries.
I dont really know what to say this week, it went by super fast and nothing that exciting happened. Sheri Dew (Pres and CEO of deseret books) came and had a fireside.  That was pretty cool.
I think the hardest part so far is learning new concepts that I've never heard of, in french, and then teaching them, in french, and then responding to questions that people pose, in french because I didn't teach it very well, because I dont speak french.
I looked in the mirrior yesterday morning and noticed that I'm getting a gut. I weighed myself. 174.5. that's a new record. Elder Bowles has porked up too, so thats not good.
My district and I got to do some of the names grandma gave me today. That was super neat. I really want a temple in Chico. We could put it on the Skyway or on the other side of that canyon.  Temples are the coolest.
People still call me Neil Diamond and ask me to sing "Sweet Caroline" allll the time. I'm a celeb. Another thing that people, random people, come up to me and ask me is to lick my elbow. Elder Chelson told EVERYONE.
In my dreams now I am always wearing missionary clothes. It's pretty weird (and some of them have been in french).
I really miss having Josh Smith as a room mate. Tell his mom to tell him to write me. I miss how it was with Josh. In the soccer picture you sent with the entire team, I WAS CUT OUT! you can see like my ear and some of my cheek. and its really pixelated. I really miss soccer, but im not gonna play soccer here. It's so dangerous! I would say 10% of the missionaries in the MTC have a cast or a brace, most of them are from soccer.
I really miss Chico's heat. It is really hot in Utah, but only becuase you have to wear church clothes. I miss swimming haha.
I got caught dancing by a member of my stake presidency and he sat me down and we talked about why missionaries dont dance. Missionaries share the same title and purpose as Aposoles. and You would not see Richard G Scott doing the Cat Daddy and you would not see Boyd K Packer doing the Stanky Legggg. haha. so I will never dance again. (I would love to see that though by the way.) I think Presidant Eyering would be good at the thizzle dance.

Set Apart

I have been blogging for years now (on my www.dsguymon.blogspot.com blog)...and I've never figured out how to put the posts in order after they have already been published, so this is out of order! (I bet they don't have that feature because the way people read blogs, from the top down, they would miss something if you squished it way back in between previous posts.)

But, anyway, I wanted to blog about William getting set apart to be a missionary. I want to explain first about what it means to be "set apart", so I just went to the official church web site, I looked around a bit...but decided to try to do this in my own words. (Hope I get it correct.) In the church, there is the priesthood. It is the power of God...the men who "hold" the priesthood have the power to act in the name of God. When young men are 12 years old and they are found to be worthy they are given the Aaronic priesthood, which is a lower or preparatory priesthood. With this priesthood, they serve and learn and grow. When they are around 18, 19 or so....they can then get the Melchizedek priesthood, which is a higher priesthood with more responsibilities and blessings. Before William left for college he was given the Melchizedek priesthood. He then became an "Elder" in the church. Elder is a title, and doesn't mean "elderly" or "old". The Elders of the church pretty much do everything, like blessings, leading, teaching, serving......all kinds of important things. It is a great responsibility to be an Elder. It's what the young men should be striving for. As you've probably seen missionary name tags, the missionaries all look like their first name is Elder, but that is really just their title. When you become an "Elder" and are given the priesthood, that doesn't automatically make you a full time missionary. After the young men are called to serve a mission and get their assignments, they prepare for their service. Right before they leave on their mission they are "set apart" for the work they are about to do.

Our stake president is President Brown. Everybody loves him....especially our family. One time he was talking at a youth fireside and he told a story about one of his relatives, a long ago Mormon Pioneer. Melanee had heard that same story before, told to her by Scott. After talking to President Brown, it was discovered that the relative in his story is Scott's relative also, so we are distantly related to the Browns. I don't know if that's why he invited us to his house for William's setting apart to be a missionary or not, but we all went over to the Brown's house on Memorial Day- Monday, May 28th 2012. I had my camera, but didn't exactly know how to ask for a picture, so I didn't....and now really wish I would have. But I do have this one from when William was only 12 or 13 years old and was at a Boy Scout Camp...and then "brother" Brown was there as one of the leaders.
On the night that William was set apart, just our family and Bishop Chamlee met in President Brown's front room.  It was peaceful and beautiful.   William was dressed in his suit and he looked like a missionary.  The spirit was there with us.  President Brown talked a little about his mission.  He told a story of a companion who did not like being on his mission and knocking on doors, but who also knew that he would never quit and wanted to finish his mission.  Scott talked a little about his mission to Colorado and even the Bishop talked about his mission.  They all bore their testimonies of the gospel and of missionary service.  I told William that I knew he was doing the right thing and that he was ready.  Bradley even said something.  Andrew passed when the conversation went to him.

Then it was time for the actual blessing.  Scott, President Brown and the Bishop stood around William sitting in a chair and put their hands upon his head.  I looked at them before the blessing was started and it looked exactly like one of those photos they publish for use in lessons, you know, the ones you can check out from the library or are now included in the primary binders.

President Brown gave the blessing, he was the one speaking, but the blessing was from the Lord.  It was very long and very detailed...unfortunately, because of my hearing loss and the reverence of his voice, I could barely hear anything and I knew I probably shouldn't open my eyes and read his lips....but I did hear a few things.  (I hope William wrote what he remembered in his missionary journal like President Brown told him to.)

-  he will learn the language well
- his experience in the church and in our ward will help him
-  he would be a leader
-  lots of people would look up to him
-  he would enjoy many baptisms
- obey the rules
-  follow the spirit

That looks like a short list, so I know there was more, but it was a beautiful, powerful, special blessing.  The things that were spoken were the things that Heavenly Father wanted William (Elder Guymon) to hear.  I'm so glad that I could be there and even though I couldn't hear every word, I know William was listening.

Being set apart takes place as close to a missionary entering the MTC as possible because after it takes place, that young man is now an actual full time, REAL missionary.  He must right then set aside the things of the world and follow all the rules that the missionaries are given.

William will be a great missionary.  I didn't need to hear that in the blessing to know it, but hearing the words and feeling the spirit, was such a calming moment.

Missions are awesome for so many reasons and I am so glad that William has prepared for his, is worthy to go on his, and is willing to serve the Lord, the people of France/Belgium, and others.

The first step of an actual mission (after all the other tedious preparation items) is the setting apart.  The words "set apart" can mean exactly that --- set apart from the worldly things, set apart from family, set apart to be able to focus on one thing....the work that needs to be done.  I'm so thankful for this church and things like blessings, especially when the blessing blesses my family.  I know how much I love William, but it's great to know that Heavenly Father loves him, too.

Letter #2 from MTC

William's e mail this week was much shorter and he didn't really answer any of our questions we've been sending him....but I LOVED the letter so much anyway!

It started out without a hi or a dear it just said-- "So i am really afraid of the Scripture Judges 12:5-6. I'm afraid that is going to happen to me."

When I read that I had to go look it up and it is pretty scary!!!

He didn't say anything more about the scripture and went on to say that he is getting stronger, growing, and is helped by the Spirit.

He said he misses his friends, but really likes all the friends he is making there.  One of his old SVU roommate's, Elder Terry,  is there at the MTC now and he lives on the same floor in the residence hall.  He is going to the Phillipeans.  Elder Terry has a companion who is a "dwarf" like the family in the show, "Little People, Big World".   William's little French group is the only French speaking district in their building, so everyone calls them "Frenchies".  He also sees his old best friend from Chico there at the MTC every day, Elder Chelson.  Elder Chelson's district has a nick name for William---they call him "Neil Diamond"...haha, I guess it sounds like Wil Guymon.  I'm surprised that 19 year olds have ever even heard of Neil Diamond, he was one of my dad's favorites, back in the day.  He says it is a such a happy moment when he sees someone there he knows because there are thousands of people he doesn't know.

For gym time, William and his companion play beach volleyball.  He says that they "tear it up" and that they beat the team who has been playing volleyball for 9 weeks and who are about to leave for Lyon, France.
He says that all the French missionaries who were there before his group are leaving to go to France on Monday, so his district will be the most senior French speaking group.

He and his companion were able to get their "investigator" to commit to baptism, but then he changed his mind and said "no".  William is convinced that if he knew French better he could have done a better job keeping him.  He also said that one day, that investigator couldn't make their lesson so he sent a friend, Daphne.  William and Elder Munns thought she had speech problems and couldn't tell what she was saying, even though she was speaking French.  At one point William asked her where she was from and she said "Montreal", she was speaking French Canadian and it sounded, according to William, "super gross".  His next statement was "French is such a pretty language, I bet God speaks it."
The rest of the letter was him telling me to get everyone to write to him and send him pictures.  He loves it there at the MTC but he misses SVU and home a lot.

He hates shaving every day, it gives him a permanent neck razor burn.

He thinks that Thomas S. Monson is coming to the MTC to train the new mission presidents and to speak to the missionaries, he's so excited about that.

In closing he told Bradley to read a scripture, told Bradley not to wear his pants, wondered what it would be like to wear and see people wearing regular clothes again, and then asked me to tell everyone to write to him.

So, write to him....and send him photographs!!!!

Thanks!!!!!

MTC e mail #1

6-5-12

William had told us in his written letter that his P Day (preparation day) was going to be on Tuesday....so I excitedly woke up and checked my e mail, then checked it every few MINUTES until it came.  (actually I did other stuff on the computer while waiting, and NO, it wasnt "Twitter"!!!)

William said that the first few days were really rough, but every day is getting better.  He thinks his companion is cool.  They are relying ("completely relying") on the "gift of tongues" to teach their "investigator" (I put quotes around investigator because the investigators at the MTC are just volunteers or other teachers acting like an investigator.). He says that the Spirit is great at the MTC and that he uses it a lot while teaching.
One of the people in his district knows no English.
He got to go to the temple.
He doesnt like eating the food, but that's ok because he met someone who has already gained 30 pounds while there at the MTC.

Have you heard of the MTC tradition or "pass alongs"?  It's what past missionaries have left for future missionaries to find.  Well, his room is full of them....things like nerf guns, a basketball hoop, and a poster which everyone who has ever had that room has signed.  They also have a pair of sweatpants which  each elder gets for a week then passes it along to the next elder.  (This is William's week to wear the sweats!)  The last pass along they found was a "GIGANTIC" (his word, his capitalization) bra in a closet...it was in HIS closet.  Rumor has it that the bra has been in that closet for 18 years.

The first three days he spent looking hard for his friend/old roommate Josh.  He was getting super discouraged because he had seen everyone else he knew was there so often, but never Josh.....thennnnnnnnnn, he remembered that Josh is in the Guatemala MTC right now and he felt and still feels very dumb about it.

The thing he misses the most is music (and dancing). He loves to  bust out the moves, but cant because one of the many rules is no dancing.  He does like the hymns, though and he and his companion sing allllllll (extra llllls are his) the time and feel the spirit while singing hymns.
The only mail he has received was cookies from Aunt Trish and family, so those of you who haven't written to him, do so now...haha!!!!

The rest I'm going to leave as a quote, because these words are HIS words and they are part of his testimony, so I don't want to change them or paraphrase------

"I dont really know what else to say besides I know what I'm doing is right and that Heavenly Father lives. Joseph Smith is a BOSS. I love learning about him. my favorite hymn is probably hymn #1 the morning breaks. A choir performed that and i dont think ive ever heard anything more beautiful in my life.
I'm out of time. Bye. Love you guys. Don't worry about me I'm having a great time!!!!!!!!
I can't wait til France."

First Letter!

This is Diane, Elder Guymon's mom.  I have been stressing out about doing this missionary blog for a week now.  I was thinking about just copy and pasting William's e mails into this blog, plain and simple as that.  But then I started to worry that he would stop writing very much if he knew that was what I was doing.  He would write general letters to all, not a nice personal letter to mom.
AND---with a public blog, ANYONE can read it, so could be bad if he says something like "my roommates smell bad" and then those roommate's parents find and read this blog and get hurt feelings.  I'm not at all worried that William would break any rules or say really mean things, but I know there have been problems of missionaries doing just that and getting found out by mission presidents, companions families, investigators, members back home, members from the mission, etc.

So when William, just today in his letter, mentioned that he likes the way his college roommate's mom does her Missionary Blog, it struck me as the answer that I've been looking for!!!!  I'm going to steal her format of just informing readers of letter's highlights!

If you are on Facebook, and are my "facebook friend", you may have seen that yesterday we received a letter in the mail...not just any letter....but the letter we have been waiting and HOPING for.  (I wasnt positive if William would send one because I sent him off without paper, envelopes, OR stamps.  (oops!)  The mail came really late (REALLY LATE).  So late, that I thought the mail man had already delivered and we just didn't get anything that day.  But at about 5:15 (dont mail mans get off at 5?) the mail man came.  I sent our little friend Adam out to get the mail and he did it, but VERY slowly.  I'm pretty sure he wasn't TRYING to torment me (maybe he WAS????) but he walked slowly up to the house, then looked at the mail, then held up the envelope that I WANTED, then proceeded to try to read the address to see if it was actually a letter from William.  I wanted to grab it out of his hand, but he kept it just barely out of my reach.  When I finally got it from him....I wanted to RIP it to SHREDS, but I decided to just tear the back so I could use the front for the blog/Facebook.  (Please don't use my address for anything bad...might be dumb to put that out there for the world to view!!!!)

The letter's date said May 31st...and it was June 4th, so that letter took a long time to get here (it was post stamped Jun 1.)  He started off "mon famille" which is French for "My Family" I think, if I remember anything from my two or three years of French!

He told us that he is safe.  The first few days were "crazy".  He is already learning a lot and learning it fast and he even remembers stuff that he learned in high school, but later in the letter he points out that he gets along so well with his companion because they are both the worst in the class so they have bonded by studying so much together.

He has seen tons of people that he knows like Elder Bowles, Chelson, tons more, then "and that twin that N****n didn't marry."  I knew exactly who he was talking about, haha!

He is avoiding ice cream at the cafeteria because he doesn't want to gain any weight.
The people who have been there a few weeks seem "old".
It's hard to get used to calling people "elder".
They have already begun teaching an "investigator" (this letter was written on his SECOND day there!!!)
His companion is a "pimpin balla"  (OKKKKAAAAYYYY, what is that, do any of you know???  It sounds like a compliment....I asked him in my letter to him "does Pimpin Balla mean a good looking athlete?", but he hasn't answered yet?)
There are 6 elders in his room.
There are 9 elders in his district, 4 going to Paris and 5 to Montreal.

AND----the last line----"I am glad I'm a missionary".

*What a great letter!
